Looking back on fifteen years of FCC policy (1989‑2004)

This contribution is a first impetus to explain the policy of the Flemish Community Commission during the period 1989‑2004. To this end the discourse of the main actors is analysed, i.e. the ministers who together form the Board and the members of parliament who have a seat in the Council. The Policy statements and the minutes of the meeting are the basis of this analysis. This literature provides interesting information about how the main actors perceive the institution, its functions and its place in the Brussels model, and mainly the way how they want to interpret their social-cultural powers and the values that play a role in all this.In deze bijdrage wordt een eerste aanzet gegeven om het beleid van de Vlaamse Gemeenschapscommissie te duiden tijdens de periode 1989‑2004. Daartoe wordt het discours geanalyseerd van de hoofdactoren, dit wil zeggen de ministers die samen het College vormen en de parlementsleden die in de Raad zetelen. De Beleidsverklaringen en de notulen van de vergaderingen dienen als uitgangspunt van de analyse. MetaBelgica: A Linked Data Infrastructure Between Federal Scientific Institutes in Belgium

The Distribution of Mobile Genetic Elements (MGEs) in MRSA CC398 Is Associated with Both Host and Country

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus clonal complex (CC) 398 has emerged from pigs to cause human infections in Europe and North America. We used a new 62-strain S. aureus microarray (SAM-62) to compare genomes of isolates from three geographical areas (Belgium, Denmark, and Netherlands) to understand how CC398 colonizes different mammalian hosts. The core genomes of 44 pig isolates and 32 isolates from humans did not vary. However, mobile genetic element (MGE) distribution was variable including SCCmec. φ3 bacteriophage and human specificity genes (chp, sak, scn) were found in invasive human but not pig isolates. SaPI5 and putative ruminant specificity gene variants (vwb and scn) were common but not pig specific. Virulence and resistance gene carriage was host associated but country specific. We conclude MGE exchange is frequent in CC398 and greatest among populations in close contact. This feature may help determine epidemiological associations among isolates of the same lineage
