Probing the Atmospheres of Planets Orbiting Microlensed Stars via Polarization Variability
We present a new method to identify and probe planetary companions of stars
in the Galactic Bulge and Magellanic Clouds using gravitational microlensing.
While spectroscopic studies of these planets is well beyond current
observational techniques, monitoring polarization fluctuations during high
magnification events induced by binary microlensing events will probe the
composition of the planetary atmospheres, an observation which otherwise is

A Characteristic Planetary Feature in Double-Peaked, High-Magnification Microlensing Events
A significant fraction of microlensing planets have been discovered in
high-magnification events, and a significant fraction of these events exhibit a
double-peak structure at their peak. However, very wide or very close binaries
can also produce double-peaked high-magnification events, with the same gross
properties as those produced by planets. Traditionally, distinguishing between
these two interpretations has relied upon detailed modeling, which is both
time-consuming and generally does not provide insight into the observable
properties that allow discrimination between these two classes of models. We
study the morphologies of these two classes of double-peaked high-magnification
events, and identify a simple diagnostic that can be used to immediately
distinguish between perturbations caused by planetary and binary companions,
without detailed modeling. This diagnostic is based on the difference in the
shape of the intra-peak region of the light curves. The shape is smooth and
concave for binary lensing, while it tends to be either boxy or convex for
planetary lensing. In planetary lensing this intra-peak morphology is due to
the small, weak cusp of the planetary central caustic located between the two
stronger cusps. We apply this diagnostic to five observed double-peaked
high-magnification events to infer their underlying nature. A corollary of our
study is that good coverage of the intra-peak region of double-peaked
high-magnification events is likely to be important for their unique

Teniendo en cuenta -como advierte Mirta Lobato a los comentaristas- que cuando habla de desigualdades en su ponencia se refiere a que "el trabajo es el eje articulador de estas reflexiones", y sin dejar de reconocer la importancia que cabe a los otros temas y sujetos sobre los que tan bien desarrolla su exposición, quiero centrarme en un grupo que estoy estudiando desde hace unos años, como es el de los inmigrantes limítrofes a la Argentina de fin de siglo XX e inicios del XXI. X-ray Halos and Large Grains in the Diffuse Interstellar Medium
Recent observations with dust detectors on board the interplanetary
spacecraft Ulysses and Galileo have recorded a substantial flux of large
interstellar grains with radii between 0.25 and 2.0 mu entering the solar
system from the local interstellar cloud. The most commonly used interstellar
grain size distribution is characterized by a a^-3.5 power law in grain radii
a, and extends to a maximum grain radius of 0.25 mu. The extension of the
interstellar grain size distribution to such large radii will have a major
effect on the median grain size, and on the amount of mass needed to be tied up
in dust for a given visual optical depth. It is therefore important to
investigate whether this population of larger dust particles prevails in the
general interstellar medium, or if it is merely a local phenomenon. The
presence of large interstellar grains can be mainly inferred from their effect
on the intensity and radial profiles of scattering halos around X-ray sources.
In this paper we examine the grain size distribution that gives rise to the
X-ray halo around Nova Cygni 1992. The results of our study confirm the need to
extend the interstellar grain size distribution in the direction of this source
to and possibly beyond 2.0 mu. The model that gives the best fit to the halo
data is characterized by: (1) a grain size distribution that follows an a^-3.5
power law up to 0.50 mu, followed by an a^-4.0 extension from 0.50 mu to 2.0
mu; and (2) silicate and graphite (carbon) dust-to-gas mass ratios of 0.0044
and 0.0022, respectively, consistent with solar abundances constraints.
Additional observations of X-ray halos probing other spatial directions are

Microlensing Characterization of Wide-Separation Planets
With their excellent photometric precision and dramatic increase in
monitoring frequency, future microlensing survey experiments are expected to be
sensitive to very short time-scale, isolated events caused by free-floating and
wide-separation planets with mass as low as a few lunar masses. We estimate the
probability of measuring the Einstein radius \theta_E for bound and
free-floating planets. We carry out detailed simulations of the planetary
events expected in next-generation surveys and estimate the resulting
uncertainty in \theta_E for these events. We show that, for main-sequence
sources and Jupiter-mass planets, the caustic structure of wide-separation
planets with projected separations of < 20 AU substantially increases the
probability of measuring the dimensionless source size and thus determining
\theta_E compared to the case of unbound planets. In this limit where the
source is much smaller than the caustic, the effective cross-section to measure
\theta_E to 10% is ~25% larger than the full width of the caustic. Measurement
of the lens parallax is possible for low-mass planetary events by combined
observations from the ground and a satellite located in an L2 orbit; this would
complete the mass measurements for such wide-separation planets. Finally,
short-duration events caused by bound planets can be routinely distinguished
from those caused by free-floating planets for planet-star separations < 20 AU
from either the deviations due to the planetary caustic or (more often) the

Acupuncture randomized trials (ART) in patients with chronic low back pain and osteoarthritis of the knee - Design and protocols
Background: We report on the study design and protocols of two randomized controlled trials (Acupuncture Randomized Trials = ART) that investigate the efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of chronic low back pain and osteoarthritis of the knee, respectively. Objective: To investigate whether acupuncture is more efficacious than (a) no treatment or (b) minimal acupuncture in the treatment of low back pain and osteoarthritis. Design: Two randomized, controlled, multicenter trials with three treatment arms and a total follow-up time of 52 weeks. Setting: 30 practitioners and outpatient units in Germany specialized in acupuncture treatment. Patients: 300 patients will be included in each study. In the low back pain trial, patients will be included according to clinical diagnosis. In the osteoarthritis pain trial, patients will be included according to the American College of Rheumatology criteria. Interventions: Patients are randomly assigned to receive either (1) semi-standardized acupuncture (150 patients), (2) minimal acupuncture at non-acupuncture points (75 patients), or (3) no treatment for two months followed by semi-standardized acupuncture (75 patients, waiting list control). Acupuncture treatment consists of 12 sessions per patient over a period of 8 weeks. Main Outcome Measure: The main outcome measure is the difference between baseline and the end of the 8-week treatment period in the following parameters: pain intensity as measured by a visual analogue scale (VAS; 0-100 mm) in the low back pain trial and by the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Score (WOMAC) in the osteoarthritis trial. Outlook: The results of these two studies (available in 2004) will provide health care providers and policy makers with the information needed to make scientifically sound assessments of acupuncture therapy
Semiclassical thermodynamics of scalar fields
We present a systematic semiclassical procedure to compute the partition
function for scalar field theories at finite temperature. The central objects
in our scheme are the solutions of the classical equations of motion in
imaginary time, with spatially independent boundary conditions. Field
fluctuations -- both field deviations around these classical solutions, and
fluctuations of the boundary value of the fields -- are resummed in a Gaussian
approximation. In our final expression for the partition function, this
resummation is reduced to solving certain ordinary differential equations.

Supra-oscillatory critical temperature dependence of Nb-Ho bilayers
We investigate the critical temperature Tc of a thin s-wave superconductor
(Nb) proximity coupled to a helical rare earth ferromagnet (Ho). As a function
of the Ho layer thickness, we observe multiple oscillations of Tc superimposed
on a slow decay, that we attribute to the influence of the Ho on the Nb
proximity effect. Because of Ho inhomogeneous magnetization, singlet and
triplet pair correlations are present in the bilayers. We take both into
consideration when solving the self consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations,
and we observe a reasonable agreement. We also observe non-trivial transitions
into the superconducting state, the zero resistance state being attained after
two successive transitions which appear to be associated with the magnetic
