Hey Doc, Can You Keep a Secret - An Ohio Physician\u27s Right to Warn Third Parties That They May Be at Risk of Contracting HIV
This note will seek to determine if granting a physician the right to warn third parties at risk is the appropriate solution to the above scenario and others like it. Part I will supply a background on the virus that causes AIDS. Part II will review possible legal justification for this breach of the confidential doctor/patient relationship. Part III discusses why there is a need to maintain strict confidentiality of AIDS-related information. Finally, Part IV will discuss alternatives to granting physicians the right to warn
The Phase Structure of Low Dimensional Large N Gauge Theories on Tori
In this paper we continue our study of the thermodynamics of large N gauge
theories on compact spaces. We consider toroidal compactifications of pure
SU(N) Yang-Mills theories and of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories
dimensionally reduced to 0+1 or 1+1 dimensions, and generalizations of such
theories where the adjoint fields are massive. We describe the phase structure
of these theories as a function of the gauge coupling, the geometry of the
compact space and the mass parameters. In particular, we study the behavior of
order parameters associated with the holonomy of the gauge field around the
cycles of the torus. Our methods combine analytic analysis, numerical Monte
Carlo simulations, and (in the maximally supersymmetric case) information from

Entanglement of indistinguishable particles in condensed matter physics
The concept of entanglement in systems where the particles are
indistinguishable has been the subject of much recent interest and controversy.
In this paper we study the notion of entanglement of particles introduced by
Wiseman and Vaccaro [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 097902 (2003)] in several specific
physical systems, including some that occur in condensed matter physics. The
entanglement of particles is relevant when the identical particles are
itinerant and so not distinguished by their position as in spin models. We show
that entanglement of particles can behave differently to other approaches that
have been used previously, such as entanglement of modes (occupation-number
entanglement) and the entanglement in the two-spin reduced density matrix. We
argue that the entanglement of particles is what could actually be measured in
most experimental scenarios and thus its physical significance is clear. This
suggests entanglement of particles may be useful in connecting theoretical and

Weak force detection using a double Bose-Einstein condensate
A Bose-Einstein condensate may be used to make precise measurements of weak
forces, utilizing the macroscopic occupation of a single quantum state. We
present a scheme which uses a condensate in a double well potential to do this.
The required initial state of the condensate is discussed, and the limitations

Symbiotic modeling: Linguistic Anthropology and the promise of chiasmus
Reflexive observations and observations of reflexivity: such agendas are by now standard practice in anthropology. Dynamic feedback loops between self and other, cause and effect, represented and representamen may no longer seem surprising; but, in spite of our enhanced awareness, little deliberate attention is devoted to modeling or grounding such phenomena. Attending to both linguistic and extra-linguistic modalities of chiasmus (the X figure), a group of anthropologists has recently embraced this challenge. Applied to contemporary problems in linguistic anthropology, chiasmus functions to highlight and enhance relationships of interdependence or symbiosis between contraries, including anthropology’s four fields, the nature of human being and facets of being human
