A lower bound on the local extragalactic magnetic field
Assuming that the hard gamma-ray emission of Cen A is a result of synchrotron
radiation of ultra-relativistic electrons, we derive a lower bound on the local
extragalactic magnetic field, G. This result is consistent with
(and close to) upper bounds on magnetic fields derived from consideration of
cosmic microwave background distortions and Faraday rotation measurements.Comment: Includes extensive discussion of particle acceleration above 10^20 eV

Structure of SPH (Self-Incompatibility Protein Homologue) Proteins: a Widespread Family of Small, Highly Stable, Secreted Proteins
SPH proteins are a large family of small, disulphide-bonded, secreted proteins, initially found in the self-incompatibility response in the field poppy , but now known to be widely distributed in plants, many containing multiple members of this protein family. Using the Origami strain of , we expressed one member of this family, SPH15 from , as a folded thioredoxin-fusion protein and purified it from the cytosol. The fusion protein was cleaved and characterised by analytical ultracentrifugation, circular dichroism, and NMR spectroscopy. This showed that SPH15 is monomeric and temperature stable, with a beta-sandwich structure. The four strands in each sheet have the same topology as the unrelated proteins; human transthyretin, bacterial TSSJ, and pneumolysin, with no discernable sequence similarity. The NMR-derived structure was compared with a model, made using a new deep learning algorithm based on co-evolution/correlated mutations, DeepCDPred, validating the method. The DeepCDPred method and homology modelling to SPH15 were then both used to derive models of the 3D structure of the three known PrsS proteins from , which have only 15-18% sequence homology to SPH15. The DeepCDPred method gave models with lower Discreet Optimised Protein Energy (DOPE) scores than the homology models. Three loops at one end of the poppy structures are postulated to interact with their respective pollen receptors to instigate programmed cell death in pollen tubes. The Revised TESS Input Catalog and Candidate Target List
We describe the catalogs assembled and the algorithms used to populate the revised TESS Input Catalog (TIC), based on the incorporation of the Gaia second data release. We also describe a revised ranking system for prioritizing stars for 2 minute cadence observations, and we assemble a revised Candidate Target List (CTL) using that ranking. The TIC is available on the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes server, and an enhanced CTL is available through the Filtergraph data visualization portal system at http://filtergraph.vanderbilt.edu/tess_ctl
TESS Reveals HD 118203 b to be a Transiting Planet
The exoplanet HD 118203 b, orbiting a bright (V = 8.05) host star, was discovered using the radial velocity method by da Silva et al., but was not previously known to transit. Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) photometry has revealed that this planet transits its host star. Nine planetary transits were observed by TESS, allowing us to measure the radius of the planet to be 1.136-0.028 +0.029 R J, and to calculate the planet mass to be 2.166-0.079 +0.074 M J. The host star is slightly evolved with an effective temperature of T eff=5683-85 +84 K and a surface gravity of log\,g=3.889 0.018-0.017. With an orbital period of 6.134985-0.000030 +0.000029 days and an eccentricity of 0.314 ± 0.017, the planet occupies a transitional regime between circularized hot Jupiters and more dynamically active planets at longer orbital periods. The host star is among the 10 brightest known to have transiting giant planets, providing opportunities for both planetary atmospheric and asteroseismic studies
Measurement of CP observables in B± â D(â)K± and B± â D(â)ϱ decays
Measurements of CP observables in B ± âD (â) K ± and B ± âD (â) Ï Â± decays are presented, where D (â) indicates a neutral D or D â meson that is an admixture of D (â)0 and DÂŻ (â)0 states. Decays of the D â meson to the DÏ 0 and DÎł final states are partially reconstructed without inclusion of the neutral pion or photon, resulting in distinctive shapes in the B candidate invariant mass distribution. Decays of the D meson are fully reconstructed in the K ± Ï â , K + K â and Ï + Ï â final states. The analysis uses a sample of charged B mesons produced in pp collisions collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0, 1.0 and 2.0 fb â1 taken at centre-of-mass energies of s=7, 8 and 13 TeV, respectively. The study of B ± âD â K ± and B ± âD â Ï Â± decays using a partial reconstruction method is the first of its kind, while the measurement of B ± âDK ± and B ± âDÏ Â± decays is an update of previous LHCb measurements. Measurement of jet suppression in central Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN)=2.76 TeV
The transverse momentum(p(T)) spectrum and nuclear modification factor (R-AA) of reconstructed jets in 0-10% and 10-30% central Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV were measured. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-k(T) jet algorithm with a resolution parameter of R = 0.2 from charged and neutral particles, utilizing the ALICE tracking detectors and Electromagnetic Calorimeter (EMCal). The jet p(T) spectra are reported in the pseudorapidity interval of \eta(jet)\ 5 GeV/c to suppress jets constructed from the combinatorial background in Pb-Pb collisions. The leading charged particle requirement applied to jet spectra both in pp and Pb-Pb collisions had a negligible effect on the R-AA. The nuclear modification factor R-AA was found to be 0.28 +/- 0.04 in 0-10% and 0.35 +/- 0.04 in 10-30% collisions, independent of p(T), jet within the uncertainties of the measurement. The observed suppression is in fair agreement with expectations from two model calculations with different approaches to jet quenching. (C) 2015 CERN for the benefit of the ALICE Collaboration. TESS Spots a Compact System of Super-Earths around the Naked-eye Star HR 858
Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) observations have revealed a compact multiplanet system around the sixth-magnitude star HR 858 (TIC 178155732, TOI 396), located 32 pc away. Three planets, each about twice the size of Earth, transit this slightly evolved, late F-type star, which is also a member of a visual binary. Two of the planets may be in mean motion resonance. We analyze the TESS observations, using novel methods to model and remove instrumental systematic errors, and combine these data with follow-up observations taken from a suite of ground-based telescopes to characterize the planetary system. The HR 858 planets are enticing targets for precise radial velocity observations, secondary eclipse spectroscopy, and measurements of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect
Two Young Planetary Systems around Field Stars with Ages between 20 and 320 Myr from TESS
Planets around young stars trace the early evolution of planetary systems. We report the discovery and validation of two planetary systems with ages <âŒ300Myr from observations by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The 40 V320 Myr old G star TOI-251 hosts a 2.74+0.18-0.18 mini-Neptune with a 4.94 day period. The 20-160 Myr old K star TOI-942 hosts a system of inflated Neptune-sized planets, with TOI-942b orbiting in a period of 4.32 days with a radius of 4.81+0.20-0.20 and TOI-942c orbiting in a period of 10.16 days with a radius of 5.79-0.18+0.19 Though we cannot place either host star into a known stellar association or cluster, we can estimate their ages via their photometric and spectroscopic properties. Both stars exhibit significant photometric variability due to spot modulation, with measured rotation periods of .3.5 days. These stars also exhibit significant chromospheric activity, with age estimates from the chromospheric calcium emission lines and X-ray fluxes matching that estimated from gyrochronology. Both stars also exhibit significant lithium absorption, similar in equivalent width to well-characterized young cluster members. TESS has the potential to deliver a population of young planet-bearing field stars, contributing significantly to tracing the properties of planets as a function of their age
Ï production in pâPb collisions at âsNN=8.16 TeV
Ï production in pâPb interactions is studied at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleonânucleon collision âsNN = 8.16 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The measurement is performed reconstructing bottomonium resonances via their dimuon decay channel, in the centre-of-mass rapidity intervals 2.03 < ycms < 3.53 and â4.46 < ycms < â2.96, down to zero transverse momentum. In this work, results on the Ï(1S) production cross section as a function of rapidity and transverse momentum are presented. The corresponding nuclear modification factor shows a suppression of the Ï(1S) yields with respect to pp collisions, both at forward and backward rapidity. This suppression is stronger in the low transverse momentum region and shows no significant dependence on the centrality of the interactions. Furthermore, the Ï(2S) nuclear modification factor is evaluated, suggesting a suppression similar to that of the Ï(1S). A first measurement of the Ï(3S) has also been performed. Finally, results are compared with previous ALICE measurements in pâPb collisions at âsNN = 5.02 TeV and with theoretical calculations.publishedVersio
