A Simple Method for Computing Singular or Nearly Singular Integrals on Closed Surfaces
We present a simple, accurate method for computing singular or nearly
singular integrals on a smooth, closed surface, such as layer potentials for
harmonic functions evaluated at points on or near the surface. The integral is
computed with a regularized kernel and corrections are added for regularization
and discretization, which are found from analysis near the singular point. The
surface integrals are computed from a new quadrature rule using surface points
which project onto grid points in coordinate planes. The method does not
require coordinate charts on the surface or special treatment of the
singularity other than the corrections. The accuracy is about , where
is the spacing in the background grid, uniformly with respect to the point
of evaluation, on or near the surface. Improved accuracy is obtained for points
on the surface. The treecode of Duan and Krasny for Ewald summation is used to

Pharmacologic Management of Pediatric Hypertension
Hypertension in children is common, and the prevalence of primary hypertension is increasing with the obesity epidemic and changing dietary choices. Careful measurement of blood pressure is important to correctly diagnose hypertension, as many factors can lead to inaccurate blood pressure measurement. Hypertension is diagnosed based on comparison of age-, sex-, and height-based norms with the average systolic and diastolic blood pressures on three separate occasions. In the absence of hypertensive target organ damage (TOD), stage I hypertension is managed first by diet and exercise, with the addition of drug therapy if this fails. First-line treatment of stage I hypertension with TOD and stage II hypertension includes both lifestyle changes and medications. First-line agents include angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, thiazide diuretics, and calcium-channel blockers. Hypertensive emergency with end-organ effects requires immediate modest blood pressure reduction to alleviate symptoms. This is usually accomplished with IV medications. Long-term reduction in blood pressure to normal levels is accomplished gradually. Specific medication choice for outpatient hypertension management is determined by the underlying cause of hypertension and the comparative adverse effect profiles, along with practical considerations such as cost and frequency of administration. Antihypertensive medication is initiated at a starting dose and can be gradually increased to effect. If ineffective at the recommended maximum dose, an additional medication with a complementary mechanism of action can be added
UW-BHI at MEDIQA 2019: An Analysis of Representation Methods for Medical Natural Language Inference
Recent advances in distributed language modeling have led to large
performance increases on a variety of natural language processing (NLP) tasks.
However, it is not well understood how these methods may be augmented by
knowledge-based approaches. This paper compares the performance and internal
representation of an Enhanced Sequential Inference Model (ESIM) between three
experimental conditions based on the representation method: Bidirectional
Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT), Embeddings of Semantic
Predications (ESP), or Cui2Vec. The methods were evaluated on the Medical
Natural Language Inference (MedNLI) subtask of the MEDIQA 2019 shared task.
This task relied heavily on semantic understanding and thus served as a
suitable evaluation set for the comparison of these representation methods
