Phaselocked patterns and amplitude death in a ring of delay coupled limit cycle oscillators

We study the existence and stability of phaselocked patterns and amplitude death states in a closed chain of delay coupled identical limit cycle oscillators that are near a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. The coupling is limited to nearest neighbors and is linear. We analyze a model set of discrete dynamical equations using the method of plane waves. The resultant dispersion relation, which is valid for any arbitrary number of oscillators, displays important differences from similar relations obtained from continuum models. We discuss the general characteristics of the equilibrium states including their dependencies on various system parameters. We next carry out a detailed linear stability investigation of these states in order to delineate their actual existence regions and to determine their parametric dependence on time delay. Time delay is found to expand the range of possible phaselocked patterns and to contribute favorably toward their stability. The amplitude death state is studied in the parameter space of time delay and coupling strength. It is shown that death island regions can exist for any number of oscillators N in the presence of finite time delay. Quantum Measurement of a Coupled Nanomechanical Resonator -- Cooper-Pair Box System

We show two effects as a result of considering the second-order correction to the spectrum of a nanomechanical resonator electrostatically coupled to a Cooper-pair box. The spectrum of the Cooper-pair box is modified in a way which depends on the Fock state of the resonator. Similarly, the frequency of the resonator becomes dependent on the state of the Cooper-pair box. We consider whether these frequency shifts could be utilized to prepare the nanomechanical resonator in a Fock state, to perform a quantum non-demolition measurement of the resonator Fock state, and to distinguish the phase states of the Cooper-pair box

Long-Term Vegetation Change in Central Africa: The Need for an Integrated Management Framework for Forests and Savannas

peer reviewedTropical forests and savannas are the main biomes in sub-Saharan Africa, covering most of the continent. Collectively they offer important habitat for biodiversity and provide multiple ecosystem services. Considering their global importance and the multiple sustainability challenges they face in the era of the Anthropocene, this chapter undertakes a comprehensive analysis of the past, present, and future vegetation patterns in central African forests and savannas. Past changes in climate, vegetation, land use, and human activity have affected the distribution of forests and savannas across central Africa. Currently, forests form a continuous block across the wet and moist areas of central Africa, and are characterized by high tree cover (>90% tree cover). Savannas and woodlands have lower tree cover (<40% tree cover), are found in drier sites in the north and south of the region, and are maintained by frequent fires. Recent tree cover loss (2000–2015) has been more important for forests than for savannas, which, however, reportedly experienced woody encroachment. Future cropland expansion is expected to have a strong impact on savannas, while the extent of climatic impacts depends on the actual scenario. We finally identify some of the policy implications for restoring ecosystems, expanding protected areas, and designing sustainable ecosystem management approaches in the region
