Security of internet protocol cameras - A case example
The interaction of consumer devices and the internet, especially in relation to security, has always been tenuous. Where it is in the best interests of companies to produce products that are cheap and accessible, these traits often go against that of security. This investigation undertakes an analysis of one such device - the DCS-930L internet protocol camera from D-Link. This camera is analysed for vulnerabilities, with an emphasis on those relating to authentication mechanisms. Several vulnerabilities are identified, and potential attacks based on these are discussed. Solutions or mitigations to these vulnerabilities are presented
Intelligent data management
Intelligent data management is the concept of interfacing a user to a database management system with a value added service that will allow a full range of data management operations at a high level of abstraction using human written language. The development of such a system will be based on expert systems and related artificial intelligence technologies, and will allow the capturing of procedural and relational knowledge about data management operations and the support of a user with such knowledge in an on-line, interactive manner. Such a system will have the following capabilities: (1) the ability to construct a model of the users view of the database, based on the query syntax; (2) the ability to transform English queries and commands into database instructions and processes; (3) the ability to use heuristic knowledge to rapidly prune the data space in search processes; and (4) the ability to use an on-line explanation system to allow the user to understand what the system is doing and why it is doing it. The effect of dynamic range compression on the psychoacoustic quality and loudness of commercial music
It is common practice for music productions to be mastered with the aim of increasing the perceived loudness for the listener, allowing one record to stand out from another by delivering an immediate impact and intensity. Since the advent of the Compact Disc in 1980, music has increased in RMS level by up to 20dB. This results in many commercial releases being compressed to a dynamic range of 2–3 dB. Initial findings of this study have determined that amplitude compression adversely affects the audio signal with the introduction of audible artifacts such as sudden gain changes, modulation of the noise floor and signal distortion, all of which appear to be related to the onset of listener fatigue.
In this paper, the history and changes in trends with respect to dynamic range are discussed and findings will be presented and evaluated. Initial experimentation, and both the roadmap and challenges for further and wider research are also described and discussed. The key aim of this research is to quantify the effects (both positive and negative) of dynamic range manipulation on the audio signal and subsequent listener experience. A future goal of this study is to ultimately define recommended standards for the dynamic range levels of mastered music in a similar manner to those associated with the film industry
Development of an intelligent interface for adding spatial objects to a knowledge-based geographic information system
Earth Scientists lack adequate tools for quantifying complex relationships between existing data layers and studying and modeling the dynamic interactions of these data layers. There is a need for an earth systems tool to manipulate multi-layered, heterogeneous data sets that are spatially indexed, such as sensor imagery and maps, easily and intelligently in a single system. The system can access and manipulate data from multiple sensor sources, maps, and from a learned object hierarchy using an advanced knowledge-based geographical information system. A prototype Knowledge-Based Geographic Information System (KBGIS) was recently constructed. Many of the system internals are well developed, but the system lacks an adequate user interface. A methodology is described for developing an intelligent user interface and extending KBGIS to interconnect with existing NASA systems, such as imagery from the Land Analysis System (LAS), atmospheric data in Common Data Format (CDF), and visualization of complex data with the National Space Science Data Center Graphics System. This would allow NASA to quickly explore the utility of such a system, given the ability to transfer data in and out of KBGIS easily. The use and maintenance of the object hierarchies as polymorphic data types brings, to data management, a while new set of problems and issues, few of which have been explored above the prototype level
Development of an eclectic dictionary for court reporting
The purpose of this research was to evaluate the resources available to the field of court reporting in the United States, specifically, the existence of an eclectic dictionary which encompasses all known methodologies and advanced principles; This study reviewed articles, texts, and manuals pertaining to court reporting to ascertain the need for an eclectic dictionary; A questionnaire was prepared and sent to all court reporting program directors of accredited programs in the United States. They were asked to provide their overall philosophy in terms of developing an eclectic dictionary and requested to respond about the need for such a dictionary; From the responses to the survey, an eclectic dictionary was created and included and appended to the study
