Structures of K0.05Na0.95NbO3 (50â300 K) and K0.30Na0.70NbO3 (100â200 K)
Rietveld refinement using neutron powder diffraction data is reported for the potential lead-free piezoelectric material KxNa1 - xNbO3 (x = 0.05, x = 0.3) at low temperatures. The structures were determined to be of rhombohedral symmetry, space group R3c, with the tilt system a-a-a- for both compositions. It was found that some of the structural parameters differ significantly in the two structures, and particularly the NbO6 octahedral strains as a function of temperature. The 300 K profile for K0.05Na0.95NbO3 shows the coexistence of rhombohedral and monoclinic phases, which indicates that the phase boundary is close to room temperature; the phase boundary for K0.30Na0.70NbO3 is found to be at approximately 180 K

The object-oriented paradigm as an implementation of systems theory in IS
Classical General Systems Theory (GST) is rich with fundamental concepts relating to the explanation of how systems behave and operate. The new concept of object-oriented techniques and methodologies was found to be closely aligned with most of the fundamental theories of GST. This article presents these alignments and similarities and clearly shows that object-oriented techniques provide a better fit to GST than older design methodologies
Methanation of CO over Ni catalyst: A theoretical study
Theoretical methods (generalized valenceâbond calculations) were used to examine the bond energies and geometries of numerous species chemisorbed onto Ni clusters representing Ni surface. These results were used to obtain thermochemical information and to examine various mechanisms for the methanation of CO over Ni: CO+3H^(â)_(2(Ni))âCH_4+H_2O. It is found that chemisorbed formyl radicals (NiâCHO) lead to a favorably appearing chain reaction that is consistent with current experimental results. In addition, we find a chemisorbed C_2 species that may be the catalytically active C_(ad) formed from dissociation of CO
Revealing Relationships among Relevant Climate Variables with Information Theory
A primary objective of the NASA Earth-Sun Exploration Technology Office is to
understand the observed Earth climate variability, thus enabling the
determination and prediction of the climate's response to both natural and
human-induced forcing. We are currently developing a suite of computational
tools that will allow researchers to calculate, from data, a variety of
information-theoretic quantities such as mutual information, which can be used
to identify relationships among climate variables, and transfer entropy, which
indicates the possibility of causal interactions. Our tools estimate these
quantities along with their associated error bars, the latter of which is
critical for describing the degree of uncertainty in the estimates. This work
is based upon optimal binning techniques that we have developed for
piecewise-constant, histogram-style models of the underlying density functions.
Two useful side benefits have already been discovered. The first allows a
researcher to determine whether there exist sufficient data to estimate the
underlying probability density. The second permits one to determine an
acceptable degree of round-off when compressing data for efficient transfer and
storage. We also demonstrate how mutual information and transfer entropy can be
applied so as to allow researchers not only to identify relations among climate
variables, but also to characterize and quantify their possible causal

125 - 211 GHz low noise MMIC amplifier design for radio astronomy
To achieve the low noise and wide bandwidth required for millimeter wavelength astronomy applications, superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixer based receiver systems have typically been used. This paper investigates the performance of high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) based low noise amplifiers (LNAs) as an alternative approach for systems operating in the 125 â 211 GHz frequency range. A four-stage, common-source, unconditionally stable monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) design is presented using the state-of-the-art 35 nm indium phosphide HEMT process from Northrop Grumman Corporation. The simulated MMIC achieves noise temperature (T_e) lower than 58 K across the operational bandwidth, with average T_e of 38.8 K (corresponding to less than 5 times the quantum limit (hf/k) at 170 GHz) and forward transmission of 20.5 ± 0.85 dB. Input and output reflection coefficients are better than -6 and -12 dB, respectively, across the desired bandwidth. To the authors knowledge, no LNA currently operates across the entirety of this frequency range. Successful fabrication and implementation of this LNA would challenge the dominance SIS mixers have on sub-THz receivers
âDominant ethnicityâ and the âethnic-civicâ dichotomy in the work of A. D. Smith
This article considers the way in which the work of Anthony Smith has helped to structure debates surrounding the role of ethnicity in present-day nations. Two major lines of enquiry are evident here. First, the contemporary role of dominant ethnic groups within 'their' nations and second, the interplay between ethnic and civic elements in nationalist argument. The two processes are related, but maintain elements of distinctiveness. Smith's major contribution to the dominant ethnicity debate has been to disembed ethnicity from the ideologically-charged and/or anglo-centric discourse of ethnic relations and to place it in historical context, thereby opening up space for dominant group ethnicity to be considered as a distinct phenomenon. This said, Smith's work does not adequately account for the vicissitudes of dominant ethnicity in the contemporary West. Building on the classical works of Hans Kohn and Friedrich Meinecke, Anthony Smith has also made a seminal contribution to the debate on civic and ethnic forms of national identity and nationalist ideology. As well as freeing this debate from the strong normative overtones which it has often carried, he has continued to insist that the terms civic and ethnic should be treated as an ideal-typical distinction rather than a scheme of classification
