Practical access to planar chiral 1,2-(α-Ketotetramethylene)- ferrocene by non-enzymatic kinetic resolution and conclusive confirmation of its absolute configuration
The asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of racemic 1,2-(α-ketotetramethylene)ferrocene using the [N-(tosyl)-1,2-diphenylethylendiamine]ruthenium(II) complex [TsDPEN-Ru(II)] as catalyst takes place with a high level of kinetic resolution to deliver the ketone in up to 99% ee. The X-ray crystallographic structure of a derivative of the alcohol co-product serves to confirm conclusively both the absolute configuration of 1,2-(α-ketotetramethylene)ferrocene and the endo-reduction selectivity
Socioeconomic questionnaire and clinical assessment in the HELENA Cross-sectional Study: methodology
Rationale: Environmental factors such as dietary habits, breastfeeding, socioeconomic conditions and educational factors are strong influences on nutritional and puberty status, physical activity, food choices and their interactions. Several diseases of adulthood seem to be linked to, or to originate from, lifestyle in childhood and adolescence.
Objective: The aims of this study are to describe birth parameters and socioeconomic factors and to assess clinical status in adolescents aged 13-16 years from 10 European countries participating in the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence (HELENA) Cross-Sectional Study (CSS).
Methodology: A self-report questionnaire on the socioeconomic status, a parental questionnaire concerning neonatal period and also a case report form (CRF), in which clinical items during clinical examination (such as medical history, treatments, anthropometry, Tanner staging, blood pressure, heart rate) were assessed. To develop these documents, first a list of items was established, a search of existing documents was performed and the advice of local and international experts was taken. All documents (questionnaires and an operations manual) were discussed in plenary HELENA meetings; a final version of these documents was fixed, and the process of translation and back translation was performed.
Results: The questionnaires and CRF were tested for validation in all 10 participant cities; 208 adolescents were enrolled during the pilot study. All items that caused problems or questions in one or more participating centers or were completed by < 85% of the adolescents were reviewed before the beginning of the HELENA-CSS.
Conclusion: These final questionnaires and CRF will contribute to better understanding of the inequalities in nutrition, behavior and health in the European adolescent population. The experience and process should be useful for other multicenter studies
Clinical and physical characteristics of thinness in adolescents: the HELENA study
International audiencePurposeThinness in adolescence has not been studied as extensively as overweight or obesity. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence, characteristics, and health impacts of thinness in a European adolescent population.MethodsThis study included 2711 adolescents (1479 girls, 1232 boys). Blood pressure, physical fitness, sedentary behaviors, physical activity (PA), and dietary intake were assessed. A medical questionnaire was used to report any associated diseases. A blood sample was collected in a subgroup of the population. Thinness and normal weight were identified using the IOTF scale. Thin adolescents were compared with adolescents of normal weight.ResultsTwo hundred and fourteen adolescents (7.9%) were classified as being thin; the prevalence rates were 8.6% in girls and 7.1% in boys. Systolic blood pressure was significantly lower in adolescents with thinness. The age at the first menstrual cycle was significantly later in thin female adolescents than in those with normal weight. Upper-body muscular strength measured in performance tests and time spent in light PA were significantly lower in thin adolescents. The Diet Quality Index was not significantly lower in thin adolescents, but the percentage of adolescents who skipped breakfast was higher in adolescents with a normal weight (27.7% vs 17.1%). Serum creatinine level and HOMA-insulin resistance were lower and vitamin B12 level was higher in thin adolescents.ConclusionsThinness affects a notable proportion of European adolescents with no physical adverse health consequences
Diastereoselective alkylation of (Arene)tricarbonyl-chromium and ferrocene complexes using a chiral C2-symmetrical 1,2 diamine as auxiliary
The aminal of (benzaldehyde)tricarbonylchromium and en-antiopure bipyrrolidine undergoes diastereoselective ortho-metallation with butyllithium. Quenching with various electrophiles, followed by hydrolysis of the aminal, affords ortho-substituted (benzaldehyde)tricarbonylchromium compounds with high ee (91-99 %). When quenched with Ph2PCl, a new chiral P,N-bidentate ligand is obtained, which shows efficiency in Pd- and Cu-catalysed reactions. The aminal of ferrocenecarbaldehyde could also be formed, but the ortho-deprotonation occurs with only moderate diastereoselectivity (70 %)
