More than one way to see it: Individual heuristics in avian visual computation
Comparative pattern learning experiments investigate how different species find regularities in sensory input, providing insights into cognitive processing in humans and other animals. Past research has focused either on one speciesâ ability to process pattern classes or different speciesâ performance in recognizing the same pattern, with little attention to individual and species-specific heuristics and decision strategies. We trained and tested two bird species, pigeons (Columba livia) and kea (Nestor notabilis, a parrot species), on visual patterns using touch-screen technology. Patterns were composed of several abstract elements and had varying degrees of structural complexity. We developed a model selection paradigm, based on regular expressions, that allowed us to reconstruct the specific decision strategies and cognitive heuristics adopted by a given individual in our task. Individual birds showed considerable differences in the number, type and heterogeneity of heuristic strategies adopted. Birdsâ choices also exhibited consistent species-level differences. Kea adopted effective heuristic strategies, based on matching learned bigrams to stimulus edges. Individual pigeons, in contrast, adopted an idiosyncratic mix of strategies that included local transition probabilities and global string similarity. Although performance was above chance and quite high for kea, no individual of either species provided clear evidence of learning exactly the rule used to generate the training stimuli. Our results show that similar behavioral outcomes can be achieved using dramatically different strategies and highlight the dangers of combining multiple individuals in a group analysis. These findings, and our general approach, have implications for the design of future pattern learning experiments, and the interpretation of comparative cognition research more generally
Farthest points and monotone operators
We apply the theory of monotone operators to study farthest points in closed bounded subsets of real Banach spaces. This new approach reveals the intimate connection between the farthest point mapping and the subdifferential of the farthest distance function. Moreover, we prove that a typical exception set in the Baire category sense is pathwise connected. Stronger results are obtained in Hubert spaces
Using local and historical data to enhance understanding of spatial and temporal rainfall patterns
Farmers face uncertainty in their businesses from many factors, but rainfall is a key determinant of both the nature of the production system and variation in financial returns. Currently, various weather forecasting services are available from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) based on about 7000 stations covering all of Australia. Seasonal Climate Forecasts are seen as another tool that can help to improve farm productivity. It is well known that many farmers keep their own rainfall records, and likely that the farmers have a high degree of confidence in their own records. Australian Bureau of Statistics figures indicate that there were possibly 7000 grain related âagricultural businessesâ in NSW alone in 2009/10 indicating that there is the potential to increase data density by up to an order of magnitude. This project is part of a broader study to improve rainfall predictions for grain farmers using data collected locally to the users (crowd sourcing). The data is collected directly on farm, and from other sources which may be available. The focus is on the historical data, its collection and analysis, in terms of discerning patterns in time and space which may help provide a local framework, within which coarser scale forecasts can be interpreted and understood. Data will be stored on secure database systems at the University of Sydney. Results indicate that farm data does provide more local detail, temporally and spatially. Deficit and surplus analysis demonstrates the predictive capacity of the local temporal data, despite limited data precluding the definition of ideal criteria and parameters for predictive âsimilar yearâ selection. The spatial data demonstrates quantifiable site specific differences from institutional data. Testing across more climate types may allow these differences to be defined within and across regions. Tests for an indicator time period show that farm rainfall in the early part of the growing season (April and May) may indeed be indicative of seasonal condtions, while more data is needed to confirm this. The use of southern oscillation life cycle information to select appropriate years considerably improved the relationships revealed, with a doubling of relationship strength across all climatic types, although the strength of the relationships differed across the climatic types, and the strongest relationships were split between the months of April and May. More extensive analysis, with more data across more BoM districts (and therefore climate classes) will be required to confirm this conclusion, but it appears that farm rainfall records and SOI information can provide an indicator time period to help farmers interpret, refine and utilise seasonal forecasts
Random Field Models for Relaxor Ferroelectric Behavior
Heat bath Monte Carlo simulations have been used to study a four-state clock
model with a type of random field on simple cubic lattices. The model has the
standard nonrandom two-spin exchange term with coupling energy and a random
field which consists of adding an energy to one of the four spin states,
chosen randomly at each site. This Ashkin-Teller-like model does not separate;
the two random-field Ising model components are coupled. When , the
ground states of the model remain fully aligned. When , a
different type of ground state is found, in which the occupation of two of the
four spin states is close to 50%, and the other two are nearly absent. This
means that one of the Ising components is almost completely ordered, while the
other one has only short-range correlations. A large peak in the structure
factor appears at small for temperatures well above the transition
to long-range order, and the appearance of this peak is associated with slow,
"glassy" dynamics. The phase transition into the state where one Ising
component is long-range ordered appears to be first order, but the latent heat

WFPC2 Observations of the Cooling Flow Elliptical in Abell 1795
We present WFPC2 images of the core of the cooling flow cD galaxy in Abell
1795. An irregular, asymmetric dust lane extends 7 \h75 kpc in projection to
the north-northwest. The dust shares the morphology observed in the H
and excess UV emission. We see both diffuse and knotty blue emission around the
dust lane, especially at the ends. The dust and emission features lie on the
edge of the radio lobes, suggesting star formation induced by the radio source
or the deflection of the radio jets off of pre-existing dust and gas. We
measure an apparent R significantly less than 3.1, implying that the
extinction law is not Galactic in the dust lane, or the presence of line
emission which is proportional to the extinction. The dust mass is at least

The Fundamental Diagram of Pedestrian Movement Revisited
The empirical relation between density and velocity of pedestrian movement is
not completely analyzed, particularly with regard to the `microscopic' causes
which determine the relation at medium and high densities. The simplest system
for the investigation of this dependency is the normal movement of pedestrians
along a line (single-file movement). This article presents experimental results
for this system under laboratory conditions and discusses the following
observations: The data show a linear relation between the velocity and the
inverse of the density, which can be regarded as the required length of one
pedestrian to move. Furthermore we compare the results for the single-file
movement with literature data for the movement in a plane. This comparison
shows an unexpected conformance between the fundamental diagrams, indicating
that lateral interference has negligible influence on the velocity-density
relation at the density domain . In addition we test a
procedure for automatic recording of pedestrian flow characteristics. We
present preliminary results on measurement range and accuracy of this method.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figure
Fractional Operators, Dirichlet Averages, and Splines
Fractional differential and integral operators, Dirichlet averages, and
splines of complex order are three seemingly distinct mathematical subject
areas addressing different questions and employing different methodologies. It
is the purpose of this paper to show that there are deep and interesting
relationships between these three areas. First a brief introduction to
fractional differential and integral operators defined on Lizorkin spaces is
presented and some of their main properties exhibited. This particular approach
has the advantage that several definitions of fractional derivatives and
integrals coincide. We then introduce Dirichlet averages and extend their
definition to an infinite-dimensional setting that is needed to exhibit the
relationships to splines of complex order. Finally, we focus on splines of
complex order and, in particular, on cardinal B-splines of complex order. The
fundamental connections to fractional derivatives and integrals as well as
Dirichlet averages are presented
Effects of Endurance Exercise Training and Crataegus Extract WSÂź 1442 in Patients with Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction - A Randomized Controlled Trial
Impaired exercise capacity is the core symptom of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). We assessed effects of exercise training and Crataegus extract WS 1442 in HFpEF and aimed to identify mechanisms of action in an exploratory trial (German Clinical Trials Register DRKS00000259). 140 sedentary HFpEF NYHA II patients on standard treatment received eight weeks of aerobic endurance training and half were randomized to WS 1442 900 mg/day. Symptoms, 2 km walking time (T2km), parameters of exercise tolerance, cardiac and vascular function, muscular efficiency and skeletal muscular haemoglobin oxygen saturation (SO2) measured during a treadmill protocol were captured at baseline and after eight weeks. Adverse events were recorded during the trial. Mechanisms of action were explored by correlation and path analyses of changes. Symptoms and exercise capacity improved with training, but correlations between improvements were low and path models were rejected. SO2 increased, decreased or undulated with increasing exercise intensity in individual patients and was not altered by training. WS 1442 improved T2km (-12.7% vs. -8.4%, p = 0.019), tended to improve symptoms and to pronounce SO2-decrease with increasing exercise, an indicator of oxygen utilisation. Endurance training and WS 1442 were safe and well tolerated in combination with standard drug treatment
The circadian rhythm of corticosteroid-binding globulin has little impact on cortisol exposure after hydrocortisone dosing
CONTEXT: Optimisation of hydrocortisone replacement therapy is important to prevent under- and over dosing. Hydrocortisone pharmacokinetics is complex as circulating cortisol is protein bound mainly to corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG) that has a circadian rhythm. OBJECTIVE: A detailed analysis of the CBG circadian rhythm and its impact on cortisol exposure after hydrocortisone administration. DESIGN AND METHODS: CBG was measured over 24 h in 14 healthy individuals and, employing a modelling and simulation approach using a semi-mechanistic hydrocortisone pharmacokinetic model, we evaluated the impact on cortisol exposure (area under concentration-time curve and maximum concentration of total cortisol) of hydrocortisone administration at different clock times and of the changing CBG concentrations. RESULTS: The circadian rhythm of CBG was well described with two cosine terms added to the baseline of CBG: baseline CBG was 21.8 ÎŒg/mL and inter-individual variability 11.9%; the amplitude for the 24 h and 12 h cosine functions were relatively small (24 h: 5.53%, 12 h: 2.87%) and highest and lowest CBG were measured at 18:00 and 02:00, respectively. In simulations, the lowest cortisol exposure was observed after administration of hydrocortisone at 23:00-02:00, whereas the highest was observed at 15:00-18:00. The differences between the highest and lowest exposure were minor (â€12.2%), also regarding the free cortisol concentration and free fraction (â€11.7%). CONCLUSIONS: CBG has a circadian rhythm but the difference in cortisol exposure is â€12.2% between times of highest and lowest CBG concentrations; therefore hydrocortisone dose adjustment based on time of dosing to adjust for the CBG concentrations is unlikely to be of clinical benefit
