Observation of Motion Dependent Nonlinear Dispersion with Narrow Linewidth Atoms in an Optical Cavity
As an alternative to state-of-the-art laser frequency stabilisation using
ultra-stable cavities, it has been proposed to exploit the non-linear effects
from coupling of atoms with a narrow transition to an optical cavity. Here we
have constructed such a system and observed non-linear phase shifts of a narrow
optical line by strong coupling of a sample of strontium-88 atoms to an optical
cavity. The sample temperature of a few mK provides a domain where the Doppler
energy scale is several orders of magnitude larger than the narrow linewidth of
the optical transition. This makes the system sensitive to velocity dependent
multi-photon scattering events (Dopplerons) that affect the cavity field
transmission and phase. By varying the number of atoms and the intra-cavity
power we systematically study this non-linear phase signature which displays
roughly the same features as for much lower temperature samples. This
demonstration in a relatively simple system opens new possibilities for
alternative routes to laser stabilization at the sub 100 mHz level and
superradiant laser sources involving narrow line atoms. The understanding of
relevant motional effects obtained here has direct implications for other

Non-linear Spectroscopy of Sr Atoms in an Optical Cavity for Laser Stabilization
We study the non-linear interaction of a cold sample of strontium-88 atoms
coupled to a single mode of a low finesse optical cavity in the so-called bad
cavity limit and investigate the implications for applications to laser
stabilization. The atoms are probed on the weak inter-combination line \lvert
5s^{2} \, ^1 \textrm{S}_0 \rangle \,-\, \lvert 5s5p \, ^3 \textrm{P}_1 \rangle
at 689 nm in a strongly saturated regime. Our measured observables include the
atomic induced phase shift and absorption of the light field transmitted
through the cavity represented by the complex cavity transmission coefficient.
We demonstrate high signal-to-noise-ratio measurements of both quadratures -
the cavity transmitted phase and absorption - by employing FM spectroscopy
(NICE-OHMS). We also show that when FM spectroscopy is employed in connection
with a cavity locked to the probe light, observables are substantially modified
compared to the free space situation where no cavity is present. Furthermore,
the non-linear dynamics of the phase dispersion slope is experimentally
investigated and the optimal conditions for laser stabilization are
established. Our experimental results are compared to state-of-the-art cavity

Parity, age at first childbirth and the prognosis of primary breast cancer.
Reproductive factors are known to be aetiologically important in breast cancer, but less is known regarding their effect on breast cancer prognosis. We have investigated the prognostic effect of age at first birth and total parity using data from the Danish Breast Cancer Cooperative Group that, since 1977, has collected population-based information on tumour characteristics, treatment regimes and follow-up status on Danish women with breast cancer. Details of pregnancy history were added from the Danish Civil Registration System and the National Birth Registry. Included in the study were 10,703 women with primary breast cancer. After adjusting for age and stage of disease (tumour size, axillary nodal status and histological grading), the number of full-term pregnancies was found without prognostic value. However, women with primary childbirth between 20 and 29 years experienced a significantly reduced risk of death compared with women with primary childbirth below the age of 20 years [20-24 years: relative risk (RR) = 0.88, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.78-0.99; 25-29 years: RR = 0.80, 95% CI 0.70-0.91]. Further adjustment for oestrogen receptor status did not influence these results. The effect was not modified by age at diagnosis, tumour size or nodal status. In conclusion, low age at first childbirth, but not parity, was associated with a poor prognosis of breast cancer. We speculate whether women who develop breast cancer despite an early first full-term pregnancy might represent a selected group with a more malignant disease
INTEGRAL observations of the Large Magellanic Cloud region
We present the preliminary results of the INTEGRAL survey of the Large
Magellanic Cloud. The observations have been carried out in January 2003 (about
10^6 s) and January 2004 (about 4x10^5 s). Here we concentrate on the bright
sources LMC X-1, LMC X-2, LMC X-3 located in our satellite galaxy, and on the
serendipitous detections of the Galactic Low Mass X-ray Binary EXO 0748-676 and

Testicular cancer risk and maternal parity: a population-based cohort study.
The aim was to study, in a population-based cohort design, whether first-born sons run a higher risk of testicular cancer than later born sons; to investigate whether this difference in risk was affected by birth cohort, age of the son, maternal age, interval to previous delivery and other reproductive factors; and, finally, to evaluate to what extent changes in women's parity over time might explain the increasing incidence of testicular cancer. By using data from the Civil Registration System, a database was established of all women born in Denmark since 1935 and all their children alive in 1968 or born later. Sons with testicular cancer were identified in the Danish Cancer Registry. Among 1015994 sons followed for 15981 967 person-years, 626 developed testicular cancer (443 non-seminomas, 183 seminomas). Later born sons had a decreased risk of testicular cancer (RR = 0.80, 95% CI = 0.67-0.95) compared with first-born sons. The RR was 0.79 (95% CI = 0.64-0.98) for non-seminomas and 0.81 (95% CI = 0.58-1.13) for seminomas. There was no association between testicular cancer risk and overall parity of the mother, maternal or paternal age at the birth of the son, or maternal age at first birth. The decreased risk of testicular cancer among later born sons was not modified by age, birth cohort, interval to the previous birth, sex of the first-born child, or maternal age at birth of the son or at first birth. The increased proportion of first-borns from birth cohort 1946 to birth cohort 1969 only explained around 3% of an approximated two-fold increase in incidence between the cohorts. Our data document a distinctly higher risk of testicular cancer in first-born compared with later born sons and suggest that the most likely explanation should be sought among exposures in utero. The increase in the proportion of first-borns in the population has only contributed marginally to the increase in testicular cancer incidence
Inelastic scattering of photoelectrons from He nanodroplets
We present a detailed study of inelastic energy-loss collisions of
photoelectrons emitted from He nanodroplets by tunable extreme ultraviolet
(XUV) radiation. Using coincidence imaging detection of electrons and ions, we
probe the lowest He droplet excited states up to the electron impact ionization
threshold. We find significant signal contributions from photoelectrons emitted
from free He atoms accompanying the He nanodroplet beam. Furthermore, signal
contributions from photoionization and electron impact excitation/ionization
occurring in pairs of nearest-neighbor atoms in the He droplets are detected.
This work highlights the importance of inelastic electron scattering in the
interaction of nanoparticles with XUV radiation
Water waves generated by a moving bottom
Tsunamis are often generated by a moving sea bottom. This paper deals with
the case where the tsunami source is an earthquake. The linearized water-wave
equations are solved analytically for various sea bottom motions. Numerical
results based on the analytical solutions are shown for the free-surface
profiles, the horizontal and vertical velocities as well as the bottom

Resolving the Hard X-ray Emission of GX 5-1 with INTEGRAL
We present the study of one year of INTEGRAL data on the neutron star low
mass X-ray binary GX 5-1. Thanks to the excellent angular resolution and
sensitivity of INTEGRAL, we are able to obtain a high quality spectrum of GX
5-1 from ~5 keV to ~100 keV, for the first time without contamination from the
nearby black hole candidate GRS 1758-258 above 20 keV. During our observations,
GX 5-1 is mostly found in the horizontal and normal branch of its hardness
intensity diagram. A clear hard X-ray emission is observed above ~30 keV which
exceeds the exponential cut-off spectrum expected from lower energies. This
spectral flattening may have the same origin of the hard components observed in
other Z sources as it shares the property of being characteristic to the
horizontal branch. The hard excess is explained by introducing Compton
up-scattering of soft photons from the neutron star surface due to a thin hot
plasma expected in the boundary layer. The spectral changes of GX 5-1 downward
along the "Z" pattern in the hardness intensity diagram can be well described
in terms of monotonical decrease of the neutron star surface temperature. This
may be a consequence of the gradual expansion of the boundary layer as the mass
