Helicoverpa armigera nucleopolyhedrovirus occlusion-derived virus-associated protein, HA100, affects oral infectivity in vivo but not virus replication in vitro
ORF100 (ha100) of Helicoverpa armigera nucleopolyhedrovirus (HearNPV) has been reported as one of the unique genes of group II alphabaculoviruses encoding a protein located in the occlusion-derived virus (ODV) envelope and nucleocapsid. The protein consists of 510 aa with a predicted mass of 58.1 kDa and is a homologue of poly(ADPāribose) glycohydrolase in eukaryotes. Western blot analysis detected a 60 kDa band in HearNPV-infected HzAM1 cells starting at 18 h post-infection. Transient expression of GFP-fused HA100 in HzAM1 cells resulted in cytoplasmic localization of the protein, but after superinfection with HearNPV, GFPfused HA100 was localized in the nucleus. To study the function of HA100 further, an ha100-null virus was constructed using bacmid technology. Viral one-step growth curve analyses showed that the ha100-null virus had similar budded virus production kinetics to that of the parental virus. Electron microscopy revealed that deletion of HA100 did not alter the morphology of ODVs or occlusion bodies (OBs). However, bioassays in larvae showed that the 50% lethal concentration (LC50) value of HA100-null OBs was significantly higher than that of parental OBs; the median lethal time (LT50) of ha100-null OBs was about 24 h later than control virus. These results indicate that HA100 is not essential for virus replication in vitro. However, it significantly affects the oral infectivity of OBs in host insects, suggesting that the association HA100 with the ODV contributes to the infectivity of OBs in vivo
Obstructive sleep apnea in combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder:a controlled polysomnography study
Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may be highly prevalent in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and may exacerbate PTSD complaints. Objective: Our objective was to determine whether the prevalence of OSA was high in a sample of Dutch veterans with PTSD as compared to age- and trauma-matched controls, and whether OSA was associated with more severe PTSD complaints. Methods: We determined the apnea hypopnea indices (AHI) with polysomnographic registrations in 20 veterans with PTSD, 24 veterans without PTSD, and 17 healthy controls. PTSD severity and nightmare complaints were assessed with the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS). Results: The prevalence of an AHI>10 was 29% in PTSD, 21% in trauma controls, and 29% in healthy controls (x2= 0.60, df=2, p=n.s.). The mean CAPS score in patients with OSA (n=6) was significantly higher than in patients without OSA (pB0.05), while nightmare severity was similar in PTSD patients with OSA as compared to PTSD patients without OSA (p=n.s.). Adjunctive quetiapine for serotonin reuptake inhibitor-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder: A meta-analysis of randomised controlled treatment trials
Small studies have shown positive effects from adding a variety of antipsychotic agents in patients with obsessiveācompulsive disorder who are unresponsive to treatment with serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The evidence, however, is contradictory. This paper reports a meta-analysis of existing double-blind randomized placebo-controlled studies looking at the addition of the second-generation antipsychotic quetiapine in such cases. Three studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Altogether 102 individuals were subjected to analysis using Review Manager (4.2.7). The results showed evidence of efficacy for adjunctive quetiapine (< 400 mg/day) on the primary efficacy criterion, measured as changes from baseline in total YaleāBrown Obsessive Compulsive Scale scores (P = 0.008), the clinical significance of which was limited by between-study heterogeneity. Association between the dopamine D-2 receptor TaqI A2 allele and low activity COMT allele with obsessive-compulsive disorder in males
BACKGROUND: Mounting evidence suggests the involvement of the dopamine system in the pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder. METHOD: The relationship of the dopamine D(2) receptor (DRD2) TaqI A, and catechol-O-methyl-transferase (COMT) NlaIII High/Low activity polymorphism to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) was examined in a sample of 150 patients and 150 controls. RESULTS: OCD patients did not show significant differences in genotype distribution and allele frequency for polymorphisms investigated relative to controls. However, when the sample was stratified by gender, there was a trend to a significant predominance of the DRD2 A2A2 genotype (p=0.049), and a higher frequency of the DRD2 A2 allele (p=0.020) and low-activity COMT allele (p=0.035) in male OCD patients compared to male controls. In addition, we observed an association of the DRD2 A2A2 genotype in patients with an early onset of disease ( <or=15 years) (p=0.033). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings replicate previous reports and provide support for a potential role of the COMT and DRD2 locus in subgroup of male, early onset patients with OC
Simultaneous visualization of language endangerment and language description
The world harbors a diversity of some 6,500 mutually unintelligible languages.As has been increasingly observed by linguists, many minority languages are be-coming endangered and will be lost forever if not documented. Urgently indeed,many efforts are being launched to document and describe languages. This under-taking naturally has the priority toward the most endangered and least describedlanguages. For the first time, we combine world-wide databases on language de-scription (Glottolog) and language endangerment (ElCat, Ethnologue, UNESCO)and provide two online interfaces, GlottoScope and GlottoVis, to visualize thesetogether. The interfaces are capable of browsing, filtering, zooming, basic statis-tics, and different ways of combining the two measures on a world map back-ground. GlottoVis provides advanced techniques for combining cluttered dotson a map. GlamMap: Geovisualization for e-Humanities
This paper presents GlamMap, a visualization tool for large, multi-variate georeferenced humanities data sets. Our approach visualizes the data as glyphs on a zoomable geographic map, and performs clustering and data aggregation at each zoom level to avoid clutter and to prevent overlap of symbols. GlamMap was developed for the Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums (GLAM) domain in cooperation with researchers in philosophy. We demonstrate the usefulness of our approach by a case study on history of logic, which involves navigation and exploration of 7100 bibliographic records, and scalability on a data set of sixty million book records
Declining trends in student performance in lower secondary education
Student performance is related to motivation to learn. As motivation generally declines during lower secondary education, one might expect performance to decline as well during this period. Though, until now, it has been unclear whether this pattern exists. In the present study, we examined student performance during the early years of secondary education from a developmental perspective. Participants were 1544 Dutch secondary school students across three grades (grades 7 to 9). To investigate student performance trends, we analysed report card grades by using hierarchical linear modelling with two levels (level 1, time point; level 2, student). Potential moderators to be examined were (1) gender, (2) school type and (3) initial level. A linear decline in report card grades from grade 7 to 9 was found for boys and girls, in all school types, and regardless of initial level. Two variables moderated the steepness of the decline: school type and initial level. Gender and school type had a main effect on performance level. The same pattern was observed for the subset of 'core subjects'-Dutch, English and mathematics. Motivational and cognitive factors that may explain the performance decline are discussed
Near Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) Antenna and Propagation Research in The Netherlands
Near Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) propagation can be used to realize radio communication without the need for an intermediate network. NVIS uses the ionosphere as a reflector to cover a large area (200 Ć 200 km) around the transmitter, on frequencies ranging from 3 to 10 MHz. NVIS is therefore used for telecommunication in areas that lack a telecommunication infrastructure, or in areas where the existing infrastructure is destroyed by a large scale disaster, such as the 2005 flooding of New Orleans. We will give an overview of the NVIS research performed in The Netherlands
Promoting performance and motivation through a combination of intrinsic motivation stimulation and an extrinsic incentive
During the early stages of secondary education studentsā motivation and performance levels decline. This study employed a case study approach to evaluate a learning environment called GUTS; Differentiated Challenging of Talent in School. GUTS was specifically designed to raise performance and motivation through a combination of (a) talent lessons as an intrinsic motivator and (b) a higher promotion standard as an extrinsic incentive. Participants were 156 students who started secondary education in grade 7 in school year 2013/2014, and participated in GUTS for three successive school years. Performance and motivation measures were longitudinally collected between grades 7 and 9 and were analysed in comparison to previous cohorts of students at the same school and students at other schools. Additionally, measures of well-being and self-esteem were included to explore possible collateral effects of the intervention. The GUTS cohort displayed generally higher levels of performance and motivation than the comparison groups. However, the GUTS cohort still showed the decline of performance and motivation between grades 7 and 9 that was also observed in the comparison groups. This study showed that performance and motivation levels were increased without collateral damage to the studentsā overall sense of well-being and self-esteem, while GUTS was not a strong enough intervention to counter the motivation and performance decline over time. Possible reasons for the persistent decline of student performance and motivation are discussed in terms of various factors at the level of GUTS, the educational context and the needs of the developing adolescent
Synergistic Formation of Radicals by Irradiation with Both Vacuum Ultraviolet and Atomic Hydrogen: A Real-Time In Situ Electron Spin Resonance Study
We report on the surface modification of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) as an
example of soft- and bio-materials that occur under plasma discharge by
kinetics analysis of radical formation using in situ real-time electron spin
resonance (ESR) measurements. During irradiation with hydrogen plasma,
simultaneous measurements of the gas-phase ESR signals of atomic hydrogen and
the carbon dangling bond (C-DB) on PTFE were performed. Dynamic changes of the
C-DB density were observed in real time, where the rate of density change was
accelerated during initial irradiation and then became constant over time. It
is noteworthy that C-DBs were formed synergistically by irradiation with both
vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) and atomic hydrogen. The in situ real-time ESR
technique is useful to elucidate synergistic roles during plasma surface
