    Federated Learning Attacks and Defenses: A Survey

    In terms of artificial intelligence, there are several security and privacy deficiencies in the traditional centralized training methods of machine learning models by a server. To address this limitation, federated learning (FL) has been proposed and is known for breaking down ``data silos" and protecting the privacy of users. However, FL has not yet gained popularity in the industry, mainly due to its security, privacy, and high cost of communication. For the purpose of advancing the research in this field, building a robust FL system, and realizing the wide application of FL, this paper sorts out the possible attacks and corresponding defenses of the current FL system systematically. Firstly, this paper briefly introduces the basic workflow of FL and related knowledge of attacks and defenses. It reviews a great deal of research about privacy theft and malicious attacks that have been studied in recent years. Most importantly, in view of the current three classification criteria, namely the three stages of machine learning, the three different roles in federated learning, and the CIA (Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability) guidelines on privacy protection, we divide attack approaches into two categories according to the training stage and the prediction stage in machine learning. Furthermore, we also identify the CIA property violated for each attack method and potential attack role. Various defense mechanisms are then analyzed separately from the level of privacy and security. Finally, we summarize the possible challenges in the application of FL from the aspect of attacks and defenses and discuss the future development direction of FL systems.     Synthesizing Conjunctive Queries for Code Search

    This paper presents Squid, a new conjunctive query synthesis algorithm for searching code with target patterns. Given positive and negative examples along with a natural language description, Squid analyzes the relations derived from the examples by a Datalog-based program analyzer and synthesizes a conjunctive query expressing the search intent. The synthesized query can be further used to search for desired grammatical constructs in the editor. To achieve high efficiency, we prune the huge search space by removing unnecessary relations and enumerating query candidates via refinement. We also introduce two quantitative metrics for query prioritization to select the queries from multiple candidates, yielding desired queries for code search. We have evaluated Squid on over thirty code search tasks. It is shown that Squid successfully synthesizes the conjunctive queries for all the tasks, taking only 2.56 seconds on average

    Analytical solution of the nitracline with the evolution of subsurface chlorophyll maximum in stratified water columns

    In a stratified water column, the nitracline is a layer where the nitrate concentration increases below the nutrient-depleted upper layer, exhibiting a strong vertical gradient in the euphotic zone. The subsurface chlorophyll maximum layer (SCML) forms near the bottom of the euphotic zone, acting as a trap to diminish the upward nutrient supply. Depth and steepness of the nitracline are important measurable parameters related to the vertical transport of nitrate into the euphotic zone. The correlation between the SCML and the nitracline has been widely reported in the literature, but the analytic solution for the relationship between them is not well established. By incorporating a piecewise function for the approximate Gaussian vertical profile of chlorophyll, we derive analytical solutions of a specified nutrient-phytoplankton model. The model is well suited to explain basic dependencies between a nitracline and an SCML. The analytical solution shows that the nitracline depth is deeper than the depth of the SCML, shoaling with an increase in the light attenuation coefficient and with a decrease in surface light intensity. The inverse proportional relationship between the light level at the nitracline depth and the maximum rate of new primary production is derived. Analytic solutions also show that a thinner SCML corresponds to a steeper nitracline. The nitracline steepness is positively related to the light attenuation coefficient but independent of surface light intensity. The derived equations of the nitracline in relation to the SCML provide further insight into the important role of the nitracline in marine pelagic ecosystems

    Construction of a one-step multiplex real-time PCR assay for the detection of serogroups A, B, and E of Pasteurella multocida associated with bovine pasteurellosis

    Bovine pasteurellosis, caused by serogroups A, B, and E of Pasteurella multocida (Pm), is mainly manifested as bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and hemorrhagic septicemia (HS). The disease has caused a great economic loss for the cattle industry globally. Therefore, identifying the Pm serogroups is critical for optimal diagnosis and subsequent clinical treatment and even epidemiological studies. In this study, a one-step multiplex real-time PCR assay was established. Three pairs of specific primers were prepared to detect the highly conserved genomic regions of serogroups A (HyaD), B (bcbD), and E (ecbJ) of Pm, respectively. The results depicted that the method had no cross-reaction with other bovine pathogens (Mannheimia hemolytica, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella Dublin, Mycobacterium paratuberculosis, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus, and Mycoplasma bovis). The linear range (107 to 102 copies/μL) showed the R2 values for serogroups A, B, and E of Pm as 0.9975, 0.9964, and 0.996, respectively. The multiplex real-time PCR efficiency was 90.30%, 90.72%, and 90.57% for CartA, CartB, and CartE, respectively. The sensitivity result showed that the serogroups A, B, and E of Pm could be detected to be as low as 10 copies/μL. The repeatability result clarified that an intra-assay and an inter-assay coefficient of variation of serogroups A, B, and E of Pm was < 2%. For the clinical samples, the detection rate was higher than the OIE-recommended ordinary PCR. Overall, the established one-step multiplex real-time PCR assay may be a valuable tool for the rapid and early detection of the serogroups A, B, and E of Pm with high specificity and sensitivity

    Comparative Analysis of the Genomes of Two Field Isolates of the Rice Blast Fungus Magnaporthe oryzae.

    Rice blast caused by Magnaporthe oryzae is one of the most destructive diseases of rice worldwide. The fungal pathogen is notorious for its ability to overcome host resistance. To better understand its genetic variation in nature, we sequenced the genomes of two field isolates, Y34 and P131. In comparison with the previously sequenced laboratory strain 70-15, both field isolates had a similar genome size but slightly more genes. Sequences from the field isolates were used to improve genome assembly and gene prediction of 70-15. Although the overall genome structure is similar, a number of gene families that are likely involved in plant-fungal interactions are expanded in the field isolates. Genome-wide analysis on asynonymous to synonymous nucleotide substitution rates revealed that many infection-related genes underwent diversifying selection. The field isolates also have hundreds of isolate-specific genes and a number of isolate-specific gene duplication events. Functional characterization of randomly selected isolate-specific genes revealed that they play diverse roles, some of which affect virulence. Furthermore, each genome contains thousands of loci of transposon-like elements, but less than 30% of them are conserved among different isolates, suggesting active transposition events in M. oryzae. A total of approximately 200 genes were disrupted in these three strains by transposable elements. Interestingly, transposon-like elements tend to be associated with isolate-specific or duplicated sequences. Overall, our results indicate that gain or loss of unique genes, DNA duplication, gene family expansion, and frequent translocation of transposon-like elements are important factors in genome variation of the rice blast fungus

    A Classification Method Based on Principal Components of SELDI Spectra to Diagnose of Lung Adenocarcinoma

    Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide, but techniques for effective early diagnosis are still lacking. Proteomics technology has been applied extensively to the study of the proteins involved in carcinogenesis. In this paper, a classification method was developed based on principal components of surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization (SELDI) spectral data. This method was applied to SELDI spectral data from 71 lung adenocarcinoma patients and 24 healthy individuals. Unlike other peak-selection-based methods, this method takes each spectrum as a unity. The aim of this paper was to demonstrate that this unity-based classification method is more robust and powerful as a method of diagnosis than peak-selection-based methods.The results showed that this classification method, which is based on principal components, has outstanding performance with respect to distinguishing lung adenocarcinoma patients from normal individuals. Through leaving-one-out, 19-fold, 5-fold and 2-fold cross-validation studies, we found that this classification method based on principal components completely outperforms peak-selection-based methods, such as decision tree, classification and regression tree, support vector machine, and linear discriminant analysis.The classification method based on principal components of SELDI spectral data is a robust and powerful means of diagnosing lung adenocarcinoma. We assert that the high efficiency of this classification method renders it feasible for large-scale clinical use
