Propulsion Controlled Aircraft design and development
This paper describes the design, development, and ground testing of the propulsion controlled aircraft (PCA) flight control system. A backup flight control system which uses only engine thrust, the PCA system utilizes collective and differential thrust changes to steer an aircraft that experiences partial or complete failure of the hydraulically actuated control surfaces. The objective of the program was to investigate, in flight, the throttles-only control capability of the F-15, using manual control, and also an augmented PCA mode in which computer-controlled thrust was used for flight control. The objective included PCA operation in up-and-away flight and, if performance was adequate, a secondary objective to make actual PCA landings. The PCA design began with a feasibility study which evaluated many control law designs. The study was done using off-line control analysis, simulation, and on-line manned flight simulator tests. Control laws, cockpit displays, and cockpit controls were evaluated by NASA test pilots. A flight test baseline configuration was selected based on projected flight performance, applicability to transport and fighter aircraft, and funding costs. During the PCA software and hardware development, the initial design was updated as data became available from throttle-only flight experiments conducted by NASA on the F-15. This information showed basic airframe characteristics that were not observed in the F-15 flight simulator and resulted in several design changes. After the primary objectives of the PCA flight testing were accomplished, additional PCA modes of operation were developed and implemented. Serial decline in lung volume parameters on computed tomography (CT) predicts outcome in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF)
OBJECTIVES: In patients with IPF, this study aimed (i) to examine the relationship between serial change in CT parameters of lung volume and lung function, (ii) to identify the prognostic value of serial change in CT parameters of lung volume, and (iii) to define a threshold for serial change in CT markers of lung volume that optimally captures disease progression. METHODS: Serial CTs were analysed for progressive volume loss or fibrosis progression in 81 IPF patients (66 males, median age = 67 years) with concurrent forced vital capacity (FVC) (median follow-up 12 months, range 6-23 months). Serial CT measurements of volume loss comprised oblique fissure posterior retraction distance (OFPRD), aortosternal distance (ASD), lung height corrected for body habitus (LH), and automated CT-derived total lung volumes (ALV) (measured using commercially available software). Fibrosis progression was scored visually. Serial changes in CT markers and FVC were compared using regression analysis, and evaluated against mortality using Cox proportional hazards. RESULTS: There were 58 deaths (72%, median survival = 17 months). Annual % change in ALV was most significantly related to annual % change in FVC (R2 = 0.26, p < 0.0001). On multivariate analysis, annual % change in ASD predicted mortality (HR = 0.97, p < 0.001), whereas change in FVC did not. A 25% decline in annual % change in ASD best predicted mortality, superior to 10% decline in FVC and fibrosis progression. CONCLUSION: In IPF, serial decline in CT markers of lung volume and, specifically, annualised 25% reduction in aortosternal distance provides evidence of disease progression, not always identified by FVC trends or changes in fibrosis extent. KEY POINTS: • Serial decline in automated and surrogate markers of lung volume on CT corresponds to changes in FVC. • Annualised reductions in the distance between ascending aorta and posterior border of the sternum on CT predict mortality beyond annualised percentage change in FVC
Design and flight test of the Propulsion Controlled Aircraft (PCA) flight control system on the NASA F-15 test aircraft
This report describes the design, development and flight testing of the Propulsion Controlled Aircraft (PCA) flight control system performed at McDonnell Douglas Aerospace (MDA), St. Louis, Missouri and at the NASA Dryden Flight Research Facility, Edwards Air Force Base, California. This research and development program was conducted by MDA and directed by NASA through the Dryden Flight Research Facility for the period beginning January 1991 and ending December 1993. A propulsion steering backup to the aircraft conventional flight control system has been developed and flight demonstrated on a NASA F-15 test aircraft. The Propulsion Controlled Aircraft (PCA) flight system utilizes collective and differential thrust changes to steer an aircraft that experiences partial or complete failure of the hydraulically actuated control surfaces. The PCA flight control research has shown that propulsion steering is a viable backup flight control mode and can assist the pilot in safe landing recovery of a fighter aircraft that has damage to or loss of the flight control surfaces. NASA, USAF and Navy evaluation test pilots stated that the F-15 PCA design provided the control necessary to land the aircraft. Moreover, the feasibility study showed that PCA technology can be directly applied to transport aircraft and provide a major improvement in the survivability of passengers and crew of controls damaged aircraft
Seasonal variation of zooplankton community structure and trophic position in the Celtic Sea: A stable isotope and biovolume spectrum approach
Zooplankton on continental shelves represent an important intermediary in the transfer of energy and matter from phytoplankton to the wider ecosystem. Their taxonomic composition and trophic interactions with phytoplanktonvaryinspaceandtime, andinterpreting theimplicationsofthis constantlyevolvinglandscaperemainsamajorchallenge.Herewecombineplanktontaxonomicdatawiththeanalysisofbiovolumespectraand stableisotopestoprovideinsightsintothetrophicinteractionsthatoccurinashelfseaecosystem(CelticSea) across the spring-summer-autumn transition. Biovolume spectra captured the seasonal development of the zooplankton community well, both in terms of total biomass and trophic positioning, and matched trophic positionsestimatedbystableisotopeanalysis.InearlyApril,largemicroplankton(63–200µm)occupiedhigher trophic positions than mesozooplankton (>200µm), likely reflecting the predominance of nanoplankton (2–20µm) that were not readily available to mesozooplanktongrazers. Biomass and number of trophic levels increasedduringthespringbloomaselevatedprimaryproductionallowedforahigherabundanceofpredatory species.DuringJuly,theplanktonassemblageoccupiedrelativelyhightrophicpositions,indicatingimportant links to the microbial loop and the recycling of organic matter. The strong correlation between biomass and communitytrophiclevelacrossthestudysuggeststhattheCelticSeaisarelativelyenclosedandpredominantly energy-limited ecosystem. The progression of the zooplankton biomass and community structure within the centralshelfregionwasdifferenttothatattheshelf-break,potentiallyreflectingincreasedpredatorycontrolof copepodsby macrozooplanktonandpelagicfishesattheshelfbreak.Wesuggestthatthecombinationofsize spectra and stable isotope techniques are highly complementary and useful for interpreting the seasonal progressionoftrophicinteractionsintheplankton
In vivo fluorescence lifetime tomography of a FRET probe expressed in mouse
Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) is a powerful biological tool for reading out cell signaling processes. In vivo use of FRET is challenging because of the scattering properties of bulk tissue. By combining diffuse fluorescence tomography with fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM), implemented using wide-field time-gated detection of fluorescence excited by ultrashort laser pulses in a tomographic imaging system and applying inverse scattering algorithms, we can reconstruct the three dimensional spatial localization of fluorescence quantum efficiency and lifetime. We demonstrate in vivo spatial mapping of FRET between genetically expressed fluorescent proteins in live mice read out using FLIM. Following transfection by electroporation, mouse hind leg muscles were imaged in vivo and the emission of free donor (eGFP) in the presence of free acceptor (mCherry) could be clearly distinguished from the fluorescence of the donor when directly linked to the acceptor in a tandem (eGFP-mCherry) FRET construct
Percentile reference values for anthropometric body composition indices in European children from the IDEFICS study
INTRODUCTION: To characterise the nutritional status in children with obesity or wasting conditions, European anthropometric reference values for body composition measures beyond the body mass index (BMI) are needed. Differentiated assessment of body composition in children has long been hampered by the lack of appropriate references.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study is to provide percentiles for body composition indices in normal weight European children, based on the IDEFICS cohort (Identification and prevention of Dietary-and lifestyle-induced health Effects in Children and infantS).
METHODS: Overall 18 745 2.0-10.9-year-old children from eight countries participated in the study. Children classified as overweight/obese or underweight according to IOTF (N = 5915) were excluded from the analysis. Anthropometric measurements (BMI (N = 12 830); triceps, subscapular, fat mass and fat mass index (N = 11 845-11 901); biceps, suprailiac skinfolds, sum of skinfolds calculated from skinfold thicknesses (N = 8129-8205), neck circumference (N = 12 241); waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio (N = 12 381)) were analysed stratified by sex and smoothed 1st, 3rd, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, 97th and 99th percentile curves were calculated using GAMLSS.
RESULTS: Percentile values of the most important anthropometric measures related to the degree of adiposity are depicted for European girls and boys. Age-and sex-specific differences were investigated for all measures. As an example, the 50th and 99th percentile values of waist circumference ranged from 50.7-59.2 cm and from 51.3-58.7 cm in 4.5-to < 5.0-year-old girls and boys, respectively, to 60.6-74.5 cm in girls and to 59.9-76.7 cm in boys at the age of 10.5-10.9 years.
CONCLUSION: The presented percentile curves may aid a differentiated assessment of total and abdominal adiposity in European children

State of the California current 2012-13: No such thing as an “average” year
This report reviews the state of the California Current System (CCS) between winter 2012 and spring 2013, and includes observations from Washington State to Baja California. During 2012, large-scale climate modes indicated the CCS remained in a cool, productive phase present since 2007. The upwelling season was delayed north of 42°N, but regions to the south, especially 33° to 36°N, experienced average to above average upwelling that persisted throughout the summer. Contrary to the indication of high production suggested by the climate indices, chlorophyll observed from surveys and remote sensing was below average along much of the coast. As well, some members of the forage assemblages along the coast experienced low abundances in 2012 surveys. Specifically, the concentrations of all lifestages observed directly or from egg densities of Pacific sardine, Sardinops sagax, and northern anchovy, Engraulis mordax, were less than previous years’ survey estimates. However, 2013 surveys and observations indicate an increase in abundance of northern anchovy. During winter 2011/2012, the increased presence of northern copepod species off northern California was consistent with stronger southward transport. Krill and small-fraction zooplankton abundances, where examined, were generally above average. North of 42°N, salps returned to typical abundances in 2012 after greater observed concentrations in 2010 and 2011. In contrast, salp abundance off central and southern California increased after a period of southward transport during winter 2011/2012. Reproductive success of piscivorous Brandt’s cormorant, Phalacrocorax penicillatus, was reduced while planktivorous Cassin’s auklet, Ptychoramphus aleuticus was elevated. Differences between the productivity of these two seabirds may be related to the available forage assemblage observed in the surveys. California sea lion pups from San Miguel Island were undernourished resulting in a pup mortality event perhaps in response to changes in forage availability. Limited biological data were available for spring 2013, but strong winter upwelling coastwide indicated an early spring transition, with the strong upwelling persisting into early summer
Peptic Ulcer Perforation as the First Manifestation of Previously Unknown Primary Hyperparathyroidism
A patient admitted for acute abdomen was incidentally found with elevated serum calcium level. In surgery, under conservative treatment of the hypercalcemia, a perforated duodenal ulcer was found and simple closure was performed. Postoperatively, calcium level continued to rise, parathyroid hormone was elevated and ultrasonographic examination showed a lesion in the right anterior neck, while serum gastrin level was normal, thus documenting the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism. Conservative treatment had no effect on calcium level and the patient was subjected to emergency neck exploration, where a large parathyroid adenoma was removed. After surgery, calcium and PTH levels were normalized and the patient was discharged on the 5th postoperative day. Peptic ulcer and its complications are usual manifestations of primary hyperparathyroidism, with or without increased gastrin level. On the other hand, cases of a perforation of peptic ulcer as the first clinical manifestation of primary hyperparathyroidism are extremely rare
‘Solo datasets’: unexpected behavioural patterns uncovered by acoustic monitoring of single individuals
A holistic understanding of the life-history strategies of marine populations is often hindered by complex population dynamics, exacerbated by an intricate movement ecology across their life history (Nathan et al. 2008; Parsons et al. 2008; Jeltsch et al. 2013). Movement patterns and spatial ecology can vary spatially and temporally for different reasons, mainly related to the organism’s life history and environmental variability (Abecasis et al. 2009, 2013; Afonso et al. 2009). Changes in spatial use and movement can occur daily when visiting feeding grounds or avoiding predators, or seasonally, when sexually mature individuals migrate to spawning/breeding grounds (Kozakiewicz 1995; Sundström et al. 2001). However, observed shifts in spatial use and movement patterns, as a result of behavioural plasticity, may also vary greatly from one individual to another of the same species and/or population (Afonso et al. 2009). Further, ontogeny can also play an important role and explain a possible change in individual spatial variation. Noticeable differences in the behaviour and movements of mature and immature individuals have been documented in various marine organisms (Lowe et al. 1996; Lecchini and Galzin 2005).
