Deep Learning Based Multimodal with Two-phase Training Strategy for Daily Life Video Classification
In this paper, we present a deep learning based multimodal system for
classifying daily life videos. To train the system, we propose a two-phase
training strategy. In the first training phase (Phase I), we extract the audio
and visual (image) data from the original video. We then train the audio data
and the visual data with independent deep learning based models. After the
training processes, we obtain audio embeddings and visual embeddings by
extracting feature maps from the pre-trained deep learning models. In the
second training phase (Phase II), we train a fusion layer to combine the
audio/visual embeddings and a dense layer to classify the combined embedding
into target daily scenes. Our extensive experiments, which were conducted on
the benchmark dataset of DCASE (IEEE AASP Challenge on Detection and
Classification of Acoustic Scenes and Events) 2021 Task 1B Development,
achieved the best classification accuracy of 80.5%, 91.8%, and 95.3% with only
audio data, with only visual data, both audio and visual data, respectively.
The highest classification accuracy of 95.3% presents an improvement of 17.9%
compared with DCASE baseline and shows very competitive to the state-of-the-art
systems
Federated Learning for Predictive Maintenance and Quality Inspection in Industrial Applications
Data-driven machine learning is playing a crucial role in the advancements of
Industry 4.0, specifically in enhancing predictive maintenance and quality
inspection. Federated learning (FL) enables multiple participants to develop a
machine learning model without compromising the privacy and confidentiality of
their data. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of different FL
aggregation methods and compare them to central and local training approaches.
Our study is based on four datasets with varying data distributions. The
results indicate that the performance of FL is highly dependent on the data and
its distribution among clients. In some scenarios, FL can be an effective
alternative to traditional central or local training methods. Additionally, we
introduce a new federated learning dataset from a real-world quality inspection
setting

Keyframe Selection for Camera Motion and Structure Estimation from Multiple Views
The original publication is available at www.springerlink.comEstimation of camera motion and structure of rigid objects in the 3D world from multiple camera images by bundle adjustment is often performed by iterative minimization methods due to their low computational effort. These methods need a robust initialization in order to converge to the global minimum. In this paper a new criterion for keyframe selection is presented. While state of the art criteria just avoid degenerated camera motion configurations, the proposed criterion selects the keyframe pairing with the lowest expected estimation error of initial camera motion and object structure. The presented results show, that the convergence probability of bundle adjustment is significantly improved with the new criterion compared to the state of the art approaches.Thorsten ThormÀhlen, Hellward Broszio and Axel Weissenfel
Deep Vehicle Detection in Satellite Video
This work presents a deep learning approach for vehicle detection in
satellite video. Vehicle detection is perhaps impossible in single EO satellite
images due to the tininess of vehicles (4-10 pixel) and their similarity to the
background. Instead, we consider satellite video which overcomes the lack of
spatial information by temporal consistency of vehicle movement. A new
spatiotemporal model of a compact convolutional, neural network is
proposed which neglects pooling layers and uses leaky ReLUs. Then we use a
reformulation of the output heatmap including Non-Maximum-Suppression (NMS) for
the final segmentation. Empirical results on two new annotated satellite videos
reconfirm the applicability of this approach for vehicle detection. They more
importantly indicate that pre-training on WAMI data and then fine-tuning on few
annotated video frames for a new video is sufficient. In our experiment only
five annotated images yield a score of 0.81 on a new video showing more
complex traffic patterns than the Las Vegas video. Our best result on Las Vegas
is a score of 0.87 which makes the proposed approach a leading method for
this benchmark
Robust Rigid Head Motion Estimation based on Differential Evolution
In this paper we present a system to robustly estimate the 3D position of a human head. Before the face model is positioned in the initial frame, it is adapted to the 3D scan of the tracked human head. Head tracking is achieved by minimizing a robust cost function with a stochastic optimization algorithm called Differential Evolution. This approach enables the estimation of large motions between consecutive frames. Furthermore, the algorithm can even handle a large number of outliers e.g. caused by occlusion and still estimate the precise position. 1
Towards Using Police Officersâ Business Smartphones for Contactless Fingerprint Acquisition and Enabling Fingerprint Comparison against Contact-Based Datasets
Recent developments enable biometric recognition systems to be available as mobile solutions or to be even integrated into modern smartphone devices. Thus, smartphone devices can be used as mobile fingerprint image acquisition devices, and it has become feasible to process fingerprints on these devices, which helps police authorities carry out identity verification. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive and in-depth engineering study on the different stages of the fingerprint recognition toolchain. The insights gained throughout this study serve as guidance for future work towards developing a contactless mobile fingerprint solution based on the iPhone 11, working without any additional hardware. The targeted solution will be capable of acquiring 4 fingers at once (except the thumb) in a contactless manner, automatically segmenting the fingertips, pre-processing them (including a specific enhancement), and thus enabling fingerprint comparison against contact-based datasets. For fingertip detection and segmentation, various traditional handcrafted feature-based approaches as well as deep-learning-based ones are investigated. Furthermore, a run-time analysis and first results on the biometric recognition performance are included
