A note on the extension of the polar decomposition for the multidimensional Burgers equation
It is shown that the generalizations to more than one space dimension of the
pole decomposition for the Burgers equation with finite viscosity and no force
are of the form u = -2 viscosity grad log P, where the P's are explicitly known
algebraic (or trigonometric) polynomials in the space variables with polynomial
(or exponential) dependence on time. Such solutions have polar singularities on

Time perception and its neuropsychological correlates in patients with schizophrenia and in healthy volunteers
Disordered time perception has been reported in schizophrenia. We investigated time perception dysfunction and its neuropsychological correlates in patients with schizophrenia. Participants comprised 38 patients and 38 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers who were compared in an auditory temporal bisection paradigm using two interval ranges (a 400/800 ins condition and a 1000/2000 ms condition). In the temporal bisection, subjects were required to categorise a probe duration as short or long, based upon the similarity with two reference durations. All subjects also completed a battery of neuropsychological tests measuring sustained attention, short- and long-term memory and executive function. In the 400/800 ins condition, patients judged durations significantly shorter than did control subjects. Patients also exhibited decreased temporal sensitivity in both conditions. We found in both groups a negative association between temporal sensitivity and sustained attention for the 400/800 ms condition, and between temporal sensitivity and long-term memory for the 1000/200 ms condition. In patients, short-term memory performance was negatively associated with duration judgement in both conditions, while executive dysfunction was correlated to a general performance deficit in the 400/800 ms condition. These findings suggest the possibility that time perception abnormalities in schizophrenia are part of neuropsychological dysfunction and are likely to adversely impact upon activity of daily living. Hybrid Decays
The heavy quark expansion of Quantum Chromodynamics and the strong coupling
flux tube picture of nonperturbative glue are employed to develop the
phenomenology of hybrid meson decays. The decay mechanism explicitly couples
gluonic degrees of freedom to the pair produced quarks and hence does not obey
the well known, but model-dependent, selection rule which states that hybrids
do not decay to pairs of L=0 mesons. However, the nonperturbative nature of
gluonic excitations in the flux tube picture leads to a new selection rule:
light hybrids do not decay to pairs of identical mesons. New features of the
model are highlighted and partial widths are presented for several low lying

Discrete Variational Optimal Control
This paper develops numerical methods for optimal control of mechanical
systems in the Lagrangian setting. It extends the theory of discrete mechanics
to enable the solutions of optimal control problems through the discretization
of variational principles. The key point is to solve the optimal control
problem as a variational integrator of a specially constructed
higher-dimensional system. The developed framework applies to systems on
tangent bundles, Lie groups, underactuated and nonholonomic systems with
symmetries, and can approximate either smooth or discontinuous control inputs.
The resulting methods inherit the preservation properties of variational
integrators and result in numerically robust and easily implementable
algorithms. Several theoretical and a practical examples, e.g. the control of
an underwater vehicle, will illustrate the application of the proposed

Quantum Gravity from Noncommutative Spacetime
We review a novel and authentic way to quantize gravity. This novel approach
is based on the fact that Einstein gravity can be formulated in terms of a
symplectic geometry rather than a Riemannian geometry in the context of
emergent gravity. An essential step for emergent gravity is to realize the
equivalence principle, the most important property in the theory of gravity
(general relativity), from U(1) gauge theory on a symplectic or Poisson
manifold. Through the realization of the equivalence principle, which is an
intrinsic property in symplectic geometry known as the Darboux theorem or the
Moser lemma, one can understand how diffeomorphism symmetry arises from
noncommutative U(1) gauge theory; thus, gravity can emerge from the
noncommutative electromagnetism, which is also an interacting theory. As a
consequence, a background-independent quantum gravity in which the prior
existence of any spacetime structure is not a priori assumed but is defined by
using the fundamental ingredients in quantum gravity theory can be formulated.
This scheme for quantum gravity can be used to resolve many notorious problems
in theoretical physics, such as the cosmological constant problem, to
understand the nature of dark energy, and to explain why gravity is so weak
compared to other forces. In particular, it leads to a remarkable picture of
what matter is. A matter field, such as leptons and quarks, simply arises as a
stable localized geometry, which is a topological object in the defining

Initial psychological responses to influenza A, H1N1 ("Swine flu")
Background
The outbreak of the pandemic flu, Influenza A H1N1 (Swine Flu) in early 2009, provided a major challenge to health services around the world. Previous pandemics have led to stockpiling of goods, the victimisation of particular population groups, and the cancellation of travel and the boycotting of particular foods (e.g. pork). We examined initial behavioural and attitudinal responses towards Influenza A, H1N1 ("Swine flu") in the six days following the WHO pandemic alert level 5, and regional differences in these responses.
Methods
328 respondents completed a cross-sectional Internet or paper-based questionnaire study in Malaysia (N = 180) or Europe (N = 148). Measures assessed changes in transport usage, purchase of preparatory goods for a pandemic, perceived risk groups, indicators of anxiety, assessed estimated mortality rates for seasonal flu, effectiveness of seasonal flu vaccination, and changes in pork consumption
Results
26% of the respondents were 'very concerned' about being a flu victim (42% Malaysians, 5% Europeans, p < .001). 36% reported reduced public transport use (48% Malaysia, 22% Europe, p < .001), 39% flight cancellations (56% Malaysia, 17% Europe, p < .001). 8% had purchased preparatory materials (e.g. face masks: 8% Malaysia, 7% Europe), 41% Malaysia (15% Europe) intended to do so (p < .001). 63% of Europeans, 19% of Malaysians had discussed the pandemic with friends (p < .001). Groups seen as at 'high risk' of infection included the immune compromised (mentioned by 87% respondents), pig farmers (70%), elderly (57%), prostitutes/highly sexually active (53%), and the homeless (53%). In data collected only in Europe, 64% greatly underestimated the mortality rates of seasonal flu, 26% believed seasonal flu vaccination gave protection against swine flu. 7% had reduced/stopped eating pork. 3% had purchased anti-viral drugs for use at home, while 32% intended to do so if the pandemic worsened.
Conclusion
Initial responses to Influenza A show large regional differences in anxiety, with Malaysians more anxious and more likely to reduce travel and to buy masks and food. Discussions with family and friends may reinforce existing anxiety levels. Particular groups (homosexuals, prostitutes, the homeless) are perceived as at greater risk, potentially leading to increased prejudice during a pandemic. Europeans underestimated mortality of seasonal flu, and require more information about the protection given by seasonal flu inoculation

Assessment of Fractionated Exhaled Nitric Oxide as a Biomarker for the Treatment of Eosinophilic Esophagitis
Diagnosis of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and determination of response to therapy is based on histological assessment of the esophagus, which requires upper endoscopy. In children, in whom a dietary approach is commonly used, multiple endoscopies are needed, because foods are eliminated and then gradually reintroduced. Ideally, noninvasive methods could supplement or replace upper endoscopy to facilitate management. Fractionated exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) has been proposed as a useful measure for monitoring disease activity in studies of patients with eosinophil-predominant asthma and in other atopic disorders. Thus, we evaluated whether FeNO levels could be a useful biomarker to assess the response to therapy in EoE patients. This study was designed to determine whether there is a change in FeNO levels during treatment with topical corticosteroids and whether changes correlated with clinical response. This was a prospective, multicenter study that enrolled nonasthmatic patients with established EoE. FeNO levels and symptom scores were measured at baseline, biweekly during 6-week swallowed fluticasone treatment, and 4 weeks posttreatment. Twelve patients completed the trial. We found a statistically significant difference between median pre- and posttreatment FeNO levels [20.3 ppb (16.0–29.0 ppb) vs 17.6 ppb (11.7–27.3 ppb), p=0.009]. However, neither the pretreatment FeNO level, a change of FeNO level after 2 weeks of treatment, nor the FeNO level at the end of treatment confidently predicted a clinical or histological response. Although our findings suggest nitric oxide possibly has a physiological role in EoE, our observations do not support a role of FeNo determination for management of EoE
Interviewer: 'Are women and girls ever responsible for the domestic violence they encounter?' Student: 'No, well, unless they did something really, really bad …'
Research shows the ‘gendered nature’ of domestic violence, with Women’s Aid (a UK-based charity) estimating that 1 in 4 women are affected (2014). This paper reports on a project - funded by Comic Relief, completed by Nottinghamshire Domestic Violence Forum (now known as Equation) and evaluated by Nottingham Trent University. The project adopts a Whole School Approach in seeking to prevent domestic violence. Students at three secondary schools attended between one and five blocks of work, and special events. There is evidence of positive developments - with young people showing understanding of domestic violence as well as the margins between healthy and unhealthy relationships. However, not all students could reply ‘never’ to the question of ‘are women and girls to blame for the domestic violence they experience?’, remarking that if the woman had done something ‘really, really bad’ then violence might be justified. We argue that young people’s uncertainties need to be situated within the gender-unequal socio-contexts of contemporary society, and further call for a WSA to domestic violence prevention to be a compulsory part of the UK national curriculum
Patients with MEN1 are at an increased risk for venous thromboembolism VTE risk in MEN1
Background: Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is a rare inherited disorder predisposing to the development of multiple functional and non-functional neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). Only uncommon MEN1-associated functional NETs such as glucagonomas (<1%) and ACTH-producing tumors (<5%) are known to be associated with hypercoagulability. It is unknown if patients with MEN1 generally have increased risk of VTE.
Methods: We queried a prospective natural history study of germline mutation positive MEN1 patients (n=286) between 1991-2019 for all lifetime events of VTE. Search terms were: DVT, thromb, embol, PE, pulmonary embolism, clot, hematology consult, anticoagulant, coumadin, lovenox, xarelto, warfarin, aspirin, rivaroxaban and apixaban. Incidence rates were calculated accounting for age and sex. Comparison was made to published incidence rates in healthy populations, different types of cancer, and Cushing's syndrome.
Results: Thirty-six subjects (median age 45 years, range 16-75) experienced a VTE event, yielding a prevalence rate of 12.9%. The age-sex adjusted incidence rate of VTE is 9.11 per 1,000 patient-years, with a sex-adjusted lifetime incidence rate of 2.81 per 1,000 patient-years. MEN1-associated lifetime incidence rates are ~two-fold higher than the estimated annual incidence rate in the general population and are comparable to known risk in the setting of various types of cancer. Approximately 80% were diagnosed with pancreatic NETs, of which 24% were insulinomas. Fourteen patients (42%) experienced peri-operative VTE events.
Conclusions: MEN1 patients have an increased risk of VTE. Further mechanistic investigation and validation from other MEN1 cohorts are needed to confirm the increased prevalence of VTE in MEN1
Ab initio study of the volume dependence of dynamical and thermodynamical properties of silicon
Motivated by the negative thermal expansion observed for silicon between 20 K
and 120 K, we present first an ab initio study of the volume dependence of
interatomic force constants, phonon frequencies of TA(X) and TA(L) modes, and
of the associated mode Gruneisen parameters. The influence of successive
nearest neighbors shells is analysed. Analytical formulas, taking into account
interactions up to second nearest neighbors, are developped for phonon
frequencies of TA(X) and TA(L) modes and the corresponding mode Gruneisen
parameters. We also analyze the volume and pressure dependence of various
thermodynamic properties (specific heat, bulk modulus, thermal expansion), and
point out the effect of the negative mode Gruneisen parameters of the acoustic
branches on these properties. Finally, we present the evolution of the mean
square atomic displacement and of the atomic temperature factor with the
temperature for different volumes, for which the anomalous effects are even
