    Relative Roles of Climate Sensitivity and Forcing in Defining the Ocean Circulation Response to Climate Change

    Abstract in HTML and technical report in PDF available on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change website (http://mit.edu/globalchange/www/).The response of the oceanā€™s meridional overturning circulation (MOC) to increased greenhouse gas forcing is examined using a coupled model of intermediate complexity, including a dynamic 3D ocean subcomponent. Parameters are the increase in CO2 forcing (with stabilization after a specified time interval) and the modelā€™s climate sensitivity. In this model, the cessation of deep sinking in the north ā€œAtlanticā€ (hereinafter, a ā€œcollapseā€), as indicated by changes in the MOC, behaves like a simple bifurcation. The final surface air temperature (SAT) change, which is closely predicted by the product of the radiative forcing and the climate sensitivity, determines whether a collapse occurs. The initial transient response in SAT is largely a function of the forcing increase, with higher sensitivity runs exhibiting delayed behavior; accordingly, high CO2-low sensitivity scenarios can be assessed as a recovering or collapsing circulation shortly after stabilization, whereas low CO2-high sensitivity scenarios require several hundred additional years to make such a determination. We also systemically examine how the rate of forcing, for a given CO2 stabilization, affects the ocean response. In contrast with previous studies based on results using simpler ocean models, we find that except for a narrow range of marginally stable to marginally unstable scenarios, the forcing rate has little impact on whether the run collapses or recovers.     Role of social environment and social clustering in spread of opinions in co-evolving networks

    Taking a pragmatic approach to the processes involved in the phenomena of collective opinion formation, we investigate two specific modifications to the co-evolving network voter model of opinion formation, studied by Holme and Newman [1]. First, we replace the rewiring probability parameter by a distribution of probability of accepting or rejecting opinions between individuals, accounting for the asymmetric influences in relationships among individuals in a social group. Second, we modify the rewiring step by a path-length-based preference for rewiring that reinforces local clustering. We have investigated the influences of these modifications on the outcomes of the simulations of this model. We found that varying the shape of the distribution of probability of accepting or rejecting opinions can lead to the emergence of two qualitatively distinct final states, one having several isolated connected components each in internal consensus leading to the existence of diverse set of opinions and the other having one single dominant connected component with each node within it having the same opinion. Furthermore, and more importantly, we found that the initial clustering in network can also induce similar transitions. Our investigation also brings forward that these transitions are governed by a weak and complex dependence on system size.     In Vitro Antitumour Activity of Some Triorganophosphinegold(I) Thionucleobases

    A series of phosphinegold(I) thionucleobase analogues, [R3PAu(SRx)] (R = Et, Ph or chexyl; HSR1 = 2-mercaptobenzoic acid, HSR2 = 2-thiouracil, HSR3 = 6-mercaptopurine and HSR4 = 6-thioguanine) have been examined for their in vitro cytotoxicity in L1210 murine leukemia cells in culture. The range of ID50 values (continuous 48 h exposure) for the complexes is 0.041 - 0.131 Ī¼M. The complexes with SR3 and SR3 are generally the most active; however, there is no clear trend associated with the phosphine ligands

    Projection on Segre varieties and determination of holomorphic mappings between real submanifolds

    It is shown that a germ of a holomorphic mapping sending a real-analytic generic submanifold of finite type into another is determined by its projection on the Segre variety of the target manifold. A necessary and sufficient condition is given for a germ of a mapping into the Segre variety of the target manifold to be the projection of a holomorphic mapping sending the source manifold into the target. An application to the biholomorphic equivalence problem is also given.Comment: 16 page

We collected >1,600 specimens from resident and nonresident neotropical migratory birds before their northerly migrations.
