The Determination of the `Diffusion Coefficients' and the Stellar Wind Velocities for X-Ray Binaries
The distribution of neutron stars (NS's) is determined by stationary solution
of the Fokker-Planck equation. In this work using the observed period changes
for four systems: Vela X-1, GX 301-2, Her X-1 and Cen X-3 we determined D, the
'diffusion coefficient',-parameter from the Fokker-Planck equation. Using
strong dependence of D on the velocity for Vela X-1 and GX 301-2, systems
accreting from a stellar wind, we determined the stellar wind velocity. For
different assumptions for a turbulent velocity we obtained . It is in good agreement with the stellar wind velocity determined by
other methods. We also determined the specific characteristic time scales for
the 'diffusion processes' in X-ray pulsars. It is of order of 200 sec for
wind-fed pulsars and 1000-10000 sec for the disk accreting systems.Comment: 8 pages, Latex, no figures, accepted for publication to Astronomical

Universal relaxational dynamics of gapped one dimensional models in the quantum sine-Gordon universality class
A semiclassical approach to the low-temperature real time dynamics of generic
one-dimensional, gapped models in the sine-Gordon model universality class is
developed. Asymptotically exact universal results for correlation functions are
obtained in the temperature regime T << Delta, where Delta is the energy gap.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Thermal expansion method for lining tantalum alloy tubing with tungsten
A differential-thermal expansion method was developed to line T-111 (tantalum - 8 percent tungsten - 2 percent hafnium) tubing with a tungsten diffusion barrier as part of a fuel element fabrication study for a space power nuclear reactor concept. This method uses a steel mandrel, which has a larger thermal expansion than T-111, to force the tungsten against the inside of the T-111 tube. Variables investigated include lining temperature, initial assembly gas size, and tube length. Linear integrity increased with increasing lining temperature and decreasing gap size. The method should have more general applicability where cylinders must be lined with a thin layer of a second material
Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability in a Weakly Ionized Medium
Ambient interstellar material may become entrained in outflows from massive
stars as a result of shear flow instabilities. We study the linear theory of
the Kelvin - Helmholtz instability, the simplest example of shear flow
instability, in a partially ionized medium. We model the interaction as a two
fluid system (charged and neutral) in a planar geometry. Our principal result
is that for much of the relevant parameter space, neutrals and ions are
sufficiently decoupled that the neutrals are unstable while the ions are held
in place by the magnetic field. Thus, we predict that there should be a
detectably narrower line profile in ionized species tracing the outflow
compared with neutral species since ionized species are not participating in
the turbulent interface with the ambient ISM. Since the magnetic field is
frozen to the plasma, it is not tangled by the turbulence in the boundary

A flight investigation of a terminal area navigation and guidance concept for STOL aircraft
A digital avionics system referred to as STOLAND has been test-flown in the NASA CV-340 to obtain performance data for time-controlled guidance in the manual flight director mode. The advanced system components installed in the cockpit included an electronic attitude director indicator and an electronic multifunction display. Navigation guidance and control computations were all performed in the digital computer. Approach paths were flown which included a narrow 180-deg turn and a 1-min, 5-deg straight-in approach to the 30-m altitude go-around point. Results are presented for 20 approaches: (1) blended radio/inertial navigation using TACAN and a microwave scanning beam landing guidance system (MODILS) permitted a smooth transition from area navigation (TACAN) to precision terminal navigation (MODILS), (2) guidance system (flight director) performance measured at an altitude of 30.5 m was within that prescribed for category II CTOL operations on a standard runway, and (3) time of arrival at a point about 2 mi from touchdown was about 4 sec plus or minus sec later than the computed nominal arrival time

A digital avionics system was installed in the CV-340 transport aircraft. Flight tests were made to obtain preliminary performance data in the manual flight director mode using time controlled guidance. These tests provide a basis for selection of terminal area guidance, navigation, and control system concepts for short haul aircraft and for investigating operational procedures
Cardiac Depression Scale: Mokken scaling in heart failure patients
Background: There is a high prevalence of depression in patients with heart failure (HF) that is associated with worsening prognosis. The value of using a reliable and valid instrument to measure depression in this population is therefore essential. We validated the Cardiac Depression Scale (CDS) in heart failure patients using a model of ordinal unidimensional measurement known as Mokken scaling. Findings: We administered in face-to-face interviews the CDS to 603 patients with HF. Data were analysed using Mokken scale analysis. Items of the CDS formed a statistically significant unidimensional Mokken scale of low strength (H<0.40) and high reliability (Rho>0.8). Conclusions: The CDS has a hierarchy of items which can be interpreted in terms of the increasingly serious effects of depression occurring as a result of HF. Identifying an appropriate instrument to measure depression in patients with HF allows for early identification and better medical management. Semi-regular continued fractions and an exact formula for the moments of the Minkowski question mark function
This paper continues investigations on the integral transforms of the
Minkowski question mark function. In this work we finally establish the
long-sought formula for the moments, which does not explicitly involve regular
continued fractions, though it has a hidden nice interpretation in terms of
semi-regular continued fractions. The proof is self-contained and does not rely

Full-analytic frequency-domain 1pN-accurate gravitational wave forms from eccentric compact binaries
The article provides ready-to-use 1pN-accurate frequency-domain gravitational
wave forms for eccentric nonspinning compact binaries of arbitrary mass ratio
including the first post-Newtonian (1pN) point particle corrections to the
far-zone gravitational wave amplitude, given in terms of tensor spherical
harmonics. The averaged equations for the decay of the eccentricity and growth
of radial frequency due to radiation reaction are used to provide stationary
