    Effective Field Theory Approach to String Gas Cosmology

    We derive the 4D low energy effective field theory for a closed string gas on a time dependent FRW background. We examine the solutions and find that although the Brandenberger-Vafa mechanism at late times no longer leads to radion stabilization, the radion rolls slowly enough that the scenario is still of interest.     On the Largest Singular Values of Random Matrices with Independent Cauchy Entries

    We apply the method of determinants to study the distribution of the largest singular values of large m×n m \times n real rectangular random matrices with independent Cauchy entries. We show that statistical properties of the (rescaled by a factor of \frac{1}{m^2\*n^2})largest singular values agree in the limit with the statistics of the inhomogeneous Poisson random point process with the intensity 1πx−3/2 \frac{1}{\pi} x^{-3/2} and, therefore, are different from the Tracy-Widom law. Among other corollaries of our method we show an interesting connection between the mathematical expectations of the determinants of complex rectangular m×n m \times n standard Wishart ensemble and real rectangular 2m×2n 2m \times 2n standard Wishart ensemble.Comment: We have shown in the revised version that the statistics of the largest eigenavlues of a sample covariance random matrix with i.i.d.     ‘Real-life’ reduction in cholesterol with statins, 1993 to 2002

    WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS SUBJECT: * Statins reduce cholesterol concentrations and cardiovascular events in randomized clinical trials. * Much less is known about their impact in the setting of normal care. WHAT THIS STUDY ADDS: * This is the first study to assess the effectiveness of lipid-lowering treatment in the general population. * We have also estimated the resultant impact on major vascular events. * We have examined the actual and potential impact of lipid-lowering treatment. AIMS: To evaluate the impact of lipid-lowering treatment on cholesterol concentrations in the setting of normal care. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of all cholesterol measurements made in Tayside, Scotland, between 1993 and 2002, linked to dispensed prescribing data for lipid-lowering drugs. It was conducted in the setting of normal care and included all patients who underwent cholesterol measurement. The main outcome measure was cholesterol concentration. RESULTS: A total of 401,489 cholesterol measurements were made on 128,240 patients over the study period. Measurements were categorized as treated and untreated according to whether patients were exposed to lipid-lowering treatment at the time the total cholesterol concentration was measured. Those categorized as untreated fell by 0.86 mmol l(-1) (13.9%) and those categorized as treated by 1.45 mmol l(-1) (23.5%). The difference between baseline and follow-up cholesterol concentrations in intention-to-treat patients was 1.53 mmol l(-1) (24%) in 2002. In the same year, mean cholesterol concentration was 4.71 mmol l(-1) (a fall of 1.65 mmol l(-1) or 25.9%) in patients judged to be taking their lipid-lowering medication, compared with 5.20 mmol l(-1) (a fall of 1.16 mmol l(-1) or 18.2%) in those judged not to be taking treatment. Cholesterol fell by 0.38 mmol l(-1) (6.3%) in a cohort of never treated patients (n = 33,679) between 1993 and 2002. CONCLUSIONS: The impact of lipid-lowering drugs on population cholesterol concentrations in the setting of normal care was significant and comparable with the cholesterol reductions seen in the setting of major statin trials, despite a significant proportion of the population receiving low dose treatment. In those subjects judged to be taking their medication, the benefits achieved were substantial. The impact of nondrug factors is indicated by the fall in population cholesterol seen in the absence of lipid-lowering treatment

    String windings in the early universe

    We study string dynamics in the early universe. Our motivation is the proposal of Brandenberger and Vafa, that string winding modes may play a key role in decompactifying three spatial dimensions. We model the universe as a homogeneous but anisotropic 9-torus filled with a gas of excited strings. We adopt initial conditions which fix the dilaton and the volume of the torus, but otherwise assume all states are equally likely. We study the evolution of the system both analytically and numerically to determine the late-time behavior. We find that, although dynamical evolution can indeed lead to three large spatial dimensions, such an outcome is not statistically favored.Comment: 26 pages, LaTeX, 4 eps figure

    Volume Stabilization and Acceleration in Brane Gas Cosmology

    We investigate toy cosmological models in (1+m+p)-dimensions with gas of p-branes wrapping over p-compact dimensions. In addition to winding modes, we consider the effects of momentum modes corresponding to small vibrations of branes and find that the extra dimensions are dynamically stabilized while the others expand. Adding matter, the compact volume may grow slowly depending on the equation of state.     Brane Gas Cosmology, M-theory and Little String Theory

    We generalize the Brane Gas Cosmological Scenario to M-theory degrees of freedom, namely M5M5 and M2M2 branes. Without brane intersections, the Brandenberger Vafa(BV) arguments applied to M-theory degrees of freedom generically predict a large 6 dimensional spacetime. We show that intersections of M5M5 and M2M2 branes can instead lead to a large 4 dimensional spacetime. One dimensional intersections in 11D is related to (2,0) little strings (LST) on NS5 branes in type IIA. The gas regime of membranes in M-theory corresponds to the thermodynamics of LST obtained from holography. We propose a mechanism whereby LST living on the worldvolume of NS5 (M5)-branes wrapping a five dimensional torus, annihilate most efficiently in 3+1 dimensions leading to a large 3+1 dimensional spacetime. We also show that this picture is consistent with the gas approximation in M-theory.Comment: 8 page

    Filaggrin-stratified transcriptomic analysis of pediatric skin identifies mechanistic pathways in patients with atopic dermatitis

    BackgroundAtopic dermatitis (AD; eczema) is characterized by a widespread abnormality in cutaneous barrier function and propensity to inflammation. Filaggrin is a multifunctional protein and plays a key role in skin barrier formation. Loss-of-function mutations in the gene encoding filaggrin (FLG) are a highly significant risk factor for atopic disease, but the molecular mechanisms leading to dermatitis remain unclear.ObjectiveWe sought to interrogate tissue-specific variations in the expressed genome in the skin of children with AD and to investigate underlying pathomechanisms in atopic skin.MethodsWe applied single-molecule direct RNA sequencing to analyze the whole transcriptome using minimal tissue samples. Uninvolved skin biopsy specimens from 26 pediatric patients with AD were compared with site-matched samples from 10 nonatopic teenage control subjects. Cases and control subjects were screened for FLG genotype to stratify the data set.ResultsTwo thousand four hundred thirty differentially expressed genes (false discovery rate, P < .05) were identified, of which 211 were significantly upregulated and 490 downregulated by greater than 2-fold. Gene ontology terms for “extracellular space” and “defense response” were enriched, whereas “lipid metabolic processes” were downregulated. The subset of FLG wild-type cases showed dysregulation of genes involved with lipid metabolism, whereas filaggrin haploinsufficiency affected global gene expression and was characterized by a type 1 interferon–mediated stress response.ConclusionThese analyses demonstrate the importance of extracellular space and lipid metabolism in atopic skin pathology independent of FLG genotype, whereas an aberrant defense response is seen in subjects with FLG mutations. Genotype stratification of the large data set has facilitated functional interpretation and might guide future therapy development
