Tau longitudinal polarization in B -> D tau nu and its role in the search for charged Higgs boson

We study the longitudinal polarization of the tau lepton in B -> D tau nu decay. After discussing possible sensitivities of tau decay modes to the tau polarization, we examine the effect of charged Higgs boson on the tau polarization in B -> D tau nu. We find a relation between the decay rate and the tau polarization, and clarify the role of the tau polarization measurement in the search for the charged Higgs boson.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures. Tau -> l nu nu is included in Sec. II. Accordingly the title is changed. References are adde

Differential age-related changes in N170 responses to upright faces, inverted faces, and eyes in Japanese children

The main objectives of this study were to investigate the development of face perception in Japanese children, focusing on the changes in face processing strategies (holistic and/or configural vs. feature-based) that occur during childhood. To achieve this, we analyzed the face-related N170 component, evoked by upright face, inverted face, and eyes stimuli in 82 Japanese children aged between 8- and 13-years-old. During the experiment, the children were asked to perform a target detection task in which they were told to press a button when they saw images of faces or kettles with mustaches, glasses, and fake noses; i.e., an implicit face perception task. The N170 signals observed after the presentation of the upright face stimuli were longer in duration and/or had at least two peaks in the 8–11-year-old children, whereas those seen in the 12–13-year-old children were sharp and only had a single peak. N170 latency was significantly longer after the presentation of the eyes stimuli than after the presentation of the upright face stimuli in the 10- and 12-year-old children. In addition, significant differences in N170 latency were observed among all three stimulus types in the 13-year-old children. N170 amplitude was significantly greater after the presentation of the eyes stimuli than after the presentation of the upright face stimuli in the 8–10- and 12-year-old children. The results of the present study indicate that the upright face stimuli were processed using holistic and/or configural processing by the 13-year-old children

Adaptive data migration scheme with facilitator database and multi-tier distributed storage in LHD

    Get PDF
Recent “data explosion” induces the demand for high flexibility of storage extension and data migration. The data amount of LHD plasma diagnostics has grown 4.6 times bigger than that of three years before. Frequent migration or replication between plenty of distributed storage becomes mandatory, and thus increases the human operational costs. To reduce them computationally, a new adaptive migration scheme has been developed on LHD’s multi-tier distributed storage. So-called the HSM (Hierarchical Storage Management) software usually adopts a low-level cache mechanism or simple watermarks for triggering the data stage-in and out between two storage devices. However, the new scheme can deal with a number of distributed storage by the facilitator database that manages the whole data locations with their access histories and retrieval priorities. Not only the inter-tier migration but also the intra-tier replication and moving are even manageable so that it can be a big help in extending or replacing storage equipment. The access history of each data object is also utilized to optimize the volume size of fast and costly RAID, in addition to a normal cache effect for frequently retrieved data. The new scheme has been verified its effectiveness so that LHD multi-tier distributed storage and other next-generation experiments can obtain such the flexible expandability

Water utilization situations at two suburban areas in Lao P.D,R. - The cases of Lahanam district, Savannakhet and its changing pattern in Xaithani district in Vienntiane Capital -

Utilization and availability of water source is a serious health problem in developing countries. To analyze local condition of water utilization patterns in Lao PDR, a comparative study on water utility and sanitation condition along the local context was conducted at 2 villages in Savannakhet province and a village in Vientiane Capital in 2005. There was no city water supply in the two areas. Water utilization and the sanitation data of the Capital village in 2000 were also employed to compare change of the situation for 6 years at the place. In Savannakhet, main water sources were dug well, river, purchase-bottle water, and rainwater storage. Rainwater was common drinking source, and a half of them drink before boiling. In the capital area, main water sources were well (borehole and dug wells), purchase-bottle water both in 2000 and in 2005. Utilization of drinking water, well water was chosen firstly and the water boiling practice rates were not so different in both areas. The consumption of purchase water was higher in Vientiane than in Savannakhet. Also, it was demonstrated that the rate of purchase water increased much at the capital in these six years

Restriction-modification system with methyl-inhibited base excision and abasic-site cleavage activities

The restriction-modification systems use epigenetic modification to distinguish between self and nonself DNA. A modification enzyme transfers a methyl group to a base in a specific DNA sequence while its cognate restriction enzyme introduces breaks in DNA lacking this methyl group. So far, all the restriction enzymes hydrolyze phosphodiester bonds linking the monomer units of DNA. We recently reported that a restriction enzyme (R.PabI) of the PabI superfamily with half-pipe fold has DNA glycosylase activity that excises an adenine base in the recognition sequence (5′-GTAC). We now found a second activity in this enzyme: at the resulting apurinic/apyrimidinic (AP) (abasic) site (5′-GT#C, # = AP), its AP lyase activity generates an atypical strand break. Although the lyase activity is weak and lacks sequence specificity, its covalent DNA–R.PabI reaction intermediates can be trapped by NaBH[subscript 4] reduction. The base excision is not coupled with the strand breakage and yet causes restriction because the restriction enzyme action can impair transformation ability of unmethylated DNA even in the absence of strand breaks in vitro. The base excision of R.PabI is inhibited by methylation of the target adenine base. These findings expand our understanding of genetic and epigenetic processes linking those in prokaryotes and eukaryotes
