    Sparse sampling, galaxy bias, and voids

    To study the impact of sparsity and galaxy bias on void statistics, we use a single large-volume, high-resolution N-body simulation to compare voids in multiple levels of subsampled dark matter, halo populations, and mock galaxies from a Halo Occupation Distribution model tuned to different galaxy survey densities. We focus our comparison on three key observational statistics: number functions, ellipticity distributions, and radial density profiles. We use the hierarchical tree structure of voids to interpret the impacts of sampling density and galaxy bias, and theoretical and empirical functions to describe the statistics in all our sample populations. We are able to make simple adjustments to theoretical expectations to offer prescriptions for translating from analytics to the void properties measured in realistic observations. We find that sampling density has a much larger effect on void sizes than galaxy bias. At lower tracer density, small voids disappear and the remaining voids are larger, more spherical, and have slightly steeper profiles. When a proper lower mass threshold is chosen, voids in halo distributions largely mimic those found in galaxy populations, except for ellipticities, where galaxy bias leads to higher values. We use the void density profile of Hamaus et al. (2014) to show that voids follow a self-similar and universal trend, allowing simple translations between voids studied in dark matter and voids identified in galaxy surveys.     Black-White Differences in Pregnancy Desire During the Transition to Adulthood

    This article explores race differences in the desire to avoid pregnancy or become pregnant using survey data from a random sample of 914 young women (ages 18-22) living in a Michigan county and semi-structured interviews with a subsample of 60 of the women. In the survey data, desire for pregnancy, indifference, and ambivalence are very rare but are more prevalent among Black women than White women. In the semi-structured interviews, although few women described fatalistic beliefs or lack of planning for future pregnancies, Black and White women did so equally often. Women more often described fatalistic beliefs and lack of planning when retrospectively describing their past than when prospectively describing their future. Using the survey data to compare prospective desires for a future pregnancy with women\u27s recollections of those desires after they conceived, more Black women shifted positive than shifted negative, and Black women were more likely to shift positive than White women-that is, Black women do not differentially retrospectively overreport prospectively desired pregnancies as having been undesired before conception. Young women\u27s consistent (over repeated interviews) prospective expression of strong desire to avoid pregnancy and correspondingly weak desire for pregnancy, along with the similarity of Black and White women\u27s pregnancy plans, lead us to conclude that a planning paradigm -in which young women are encouraged and supported in implementing their pregnancy desires-is probably appropriate for the vast majority of young women and, most importantly, is similarly appropriate for Black and White young women

    Primate cognition in zoos : reviewing the impact of zoo-based research over 15 years

Historically founded in research centers and private collections, and spreading to modern zoos, sanctuaries, and the field, primate cognition has been investigated in diverse settings, each with benefits and challenges. In our systematic review of 12 primatology, animal behavior, and animal cognition journals over the last 15 years, we turn a spotlight on zoos to quantify their current impact on the field and to highlight their potential as robust contributors to future work. To put zoo-based research in context, we compare zoos to three other site types: university-owned or independent research centers, sanctuaries, and field sites. We assess the contributions of zoos across several critical considerations in primate cognition research, including number of investigations, species diversity, sample size, research topic diversity, and methodology. We identified 1,119 publications reporting studies of primate cognition, almost 25% of which report research conducted in zoos. Across publications, zoo-based research has greater species diversity than research centers and covers a diverse range of research topics. Although our review is merely a snapshot of primate cognition research, our findings suggest that zoos may present advantages to researchers regarding species diversity, and lack some of the methodological constraints of field sites, allowing greater ease of access to a diverse range of subjects for cognition investigations. We suggest that zoos have great potential as key contributors for future investigations in primate cognition. Finally, we shed light on the symbiotic relationship that can emerge between researchers and zoos, forming partnerships that bring unique advantages to both parties.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Stability of Single Particle Tracers for Differentiating Between Heavy- and Light-Duty Vehicle Emissions

    To determine the size and chemical composition of particles derived from on-road vehicle emissions, individual particles were sampledcontinuously with an aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometer (ATOFMS) at the Caldecott Tunnel in Northern California. In this tunnel, traffic is segregated, such that in theory only light duty vehicle emissions or a mix of heavy- (HDV) and light-duty vehicle (LDV) emissions can be sampled separately. Two studies were carried out, one in November 1997 anda secondin July 2000, time periods with average ambient temperatures of 10–15 and 26–32 1C, respectively, with the instrument operating at ambient outdoor temperatures. Analysis of the chemical composition of the particles sampled in these studies shows that sampling conditions can strongly impact the determination of suitable markers for identifying particles emitted from different vehicle types during ambient studies

    Prevention and Reversal of Atrial Fibrillation Inducibility and Autonomic Remodeling by Low-Level Vagosympathetic Nerve Stimulation

    ObjectivesWe hypothesized that autonomic atrial remodeling can be reversed by low-level (LL) vagosympathetic nerve stimulation (VNS).BackgroundPreviously, we showed that VNS can be antiarrhythmogenic.MethodsThirty-three dogs were subjected to electrical stimulation (20 Hz) applied to both vagosympathetic trunks at voltages 10% to 50% below the threshold that slowed sinus rate or AV conduction. Group 1 (n = 7): Programmed stimulation (PS) was performed at baseline and during 6-h rapid atrial pacing (RAP). PS allowed determination of effective refractory period (ERP) and AF inducibility measured by window of vulnerability (WOV). LL-VNS was continuously applied from the 4th to 6th hours. Group 2 (n = 4): After baseline ERP and WOV determinations, 6-h concomitant RAP+LL-VNS was applied. Sustained AF was induced by injecting acetylcholine (ACh) 10 mM into the anterior right ganglionated plexus (Group 3, n = 10) or applying ACh 10 mM to right atrial appendage (Group 4, n = 9).ResultsGroup 1: The ERP progressively shortened and the ΣWOV (sum of WOV from all tested sites) progressively increased (p < 0.05) during 3-h RAP then returned toward baseline during 3-h RAP+LL-VNS (p < 0.05). Group 2: 6-h concomitant RAP+LL-VNS did not induce any significant change in ERP and ΣWOV. Group 3 and Group 4: AF duration (AF-D) and cycle length (AF-CL) were markedly altered by 3-h LL-VNS (Group 3: baseline: AF-D = 389 ± 90 s, AF-CL = 45.1 ± 7.8 ms; LL-VNS: AF-D = 50 ± 15 s, AF-CL = 82.0 ± 13.7 ms [both p < 0.001]; Group 4: baseline: AF-D = 505 ± 162 s, AF-CL = 48.8 ± 6.6 ms; LL-VNS: AF-D = 71 ± 21 s, AF-CL = 101.3 ± 20.9 ms [both p < 0.001]).ConclusionsLL-VNS can prevent and reverse atrial remodeling induced by RAP as well as suppress AF induced by strong cholinergic stimulation. Inhibition of the intrinsic cardiac autonomic nervous system by LL-VNS may be responsible for these salutary results
