Paratubal serous borderline tumor in an 85 years old woman: A case report
Paratubal cysts are incidental, common and benign lesions with few cases of borderline tumor and adenocarcinoma been reported in the literature. Herein, we are discussing a case of an 85 years old woman who visited her Obstetrics and Gynecologist for a chief complaint of post-menopausal bleeding. Physical examination revealed a slightly enlarged uterus. The diagnosis of fibroids were made on ultrasound. A total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was performed without complications. The gross examination of the specimen was most remarkable for multiple intramural fibroids and a right simple paratubal cyst meausirng 1 Ă 1 cm. Microscopical evaluation of the paratubal cyst showed a simple cyst lined by stratified cuboidal epithelium with mild cytologic atypia and no stromal invasion, findings consistent with serous borderline tumor rising in a paratubal cyst. Due to the small size of the tumor and its confinement to the cyst, a follow-up was advised. Serous borderline tumors arising in paratubal cyst are very rare with only eight cases reported in the literature. Their existence should be acknowledged to plan patient treatment and outcome
Evolutionary insights into premetazoan functions of the neuronal protein homer.
Reconstructing the evolution and ancestral functions of synaptic proteins promises to shed light on how neurons first evolved. The postsynaptic density (PSD) protein Homer scaffolds membrane receptors and regulates Ca(2+) signaling in diverse metazoan cell types (including neurons and muscle cells), yet its ancestry and core functions are poorly understood. We find that the protein domain organization and essential biochemical properties of metazoan Homer proteins, including their ability to tetramerize, are conserved in the choanoflagellate Salpingoeca rosetta, one of the closest living relatives of metazoans. Unlike in neurons, Homer localizes to the nucleoplasm in S. rosetta and interacts directly with Flotillin, a protein more commonly associated with cell membranes. Surprisingly, we found that the Homer/Flotillin interaction and its localization to the nucleus are conserved in metazoan astrocytes. These findings suggest that Homer originally interacted with Flotillin in the nucleus of the last common ancestor of metazoans and choanoflagellates and was later co-opted to function as a membrane receptor scaffold in the PSD
Interrogation of the iNKT-MAIT Cell Interface
Invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells and mucosa-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells are unique subsets of invariant T cells that are involved in regulating various tumor responses and display potent anti-microbial properties. Upon their activation, iNKT and MAIT cells secrete large quantities of T helper 1 (Th1)-, Th2-, and Th17-type cytokines that mediate their ability to regulate a variety of other immune cells, including B cells, natural killer cells, and macrophages. However, whether and how iNKT and MAIT cells regulate each other in vivo remains unknown. Here, we provide evidence for a cross-talk between iNKT and MAIT cells that resembles the interactions they have with other immune cells
Breaking the paradigm: Dr Insight empowers signature-free, enhanced drug repurposing
Motivation: Transcriptome-based computational drug repurposing has attracted considerable interest by bringing about faster and more cost-effective drug discovery. Nevertheless, key limitations of the current drug connectivity-mapping paradigm have been long overlooked, including the lack of effective means to determine optimal query gene signatures. Results: The novel approach Dr Insight implements a frame-breaking statistical model for the âhand-shakeâ between disease and drug data. The genome-wide screening of concordantly expressed genes (CEGs) eliminates the need for subjective selection of query signatures, added to eliciting better proxy for potential disease-specific drug targets. Extensive comparisons on simulated and real cancer datasets have validated the superior performance of Dr Insight over several popular drug-repurposing methods to detect known cancer drugs and drugâtarget interactions. A proof-of-concept trial using the TCGA breast cancer dataset demonstrates the application of Dr Insight for a comprehensive analysis, from redirection of drug therapies, to a systematic construction of disease-specific drug-target networks
Model Independent Naturalness Bounds on Magnetic Moments of Majorana Neutrinos
We analyze the implications of neutrino masses for the magnitude of neutrino
magnetic moments. By considering electroweak radiative corrections to the
neutrino mass, we derive model-independent naturalness upper bounds on neutrino
magnetic moments, generated by physics above the electroweak scale. For
Majorana neutrinos, these bounds are weaker than present experimental limits if
if generated by new physics at 1 TeV, and surpass current
experimental sensitivity only for new physics scales 10 -- 100 TeV. The
discovery of a neutrino magnetic moment near present limits would thus signify
that neutrinos are Majorana particles.Comment: To appear in Proceedings of SUSY06, the 14th International Conference

Modeling Heterogeneity in Consumer Preferences for Select Food Safety Attributes in China
Food safety issues often arise from problems of asymmetric information between consumers and suppliers with regards to product-specific attributes. Severe food safety scandals were observed recently in China that not only caused direct economic and life loss but also created distrust in the Chinese food system domestically as well as internationally. While much attention has focused on the problems plaguing the Chinese governmentâs food inspection system, little research has been dedicated to analyze consumersâ concerns over food safety. In this paper we measure consumer preferences for select food safety attributes in pork and take their food safety risk perceptions into account. Several choice experiment models, including latent class and random parameters logit, are constructed to capture heterogeneity in consumer preferences. A statistical sample of 6,720 observations is obtained from a choice experiment administered in seven major Chinese metropolitan cities. Our results suggest that Chinese consumers have the highest willingness-to-pay for a government certification program, followed by a traceability system, third party certification and a product-specific information label. The results of this study call upon the direct involvement of the Chinese government in the food safety system. A more strict monitoring system will not only improve consumer welfare in the short-run but also restore consumersâ trust leading to a social welfare increase in the long run.Food safety, choice experiment, willingness-to-pay, risk perceptions, random parameters logit, latent class logit, Agricultural and Food Policy, Consumer/Household Economics, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety, Q13, Q17, Q18,
Identification of novel components of Trypanosoma brucei editosomes
The editosome is a multiprotein complex that catalyzes the insertion and deletion of uridylates that occurs during RNA editing in trypanosomatids. We report the identification of nine novel editosome proteins in Trypanosoma brucei. They were identified by mass spectrometric analysis of functional editosomes that were purified by serial ion exchange/gel permeation chromatography, immunoaffinity chromatography specific to the TbMP63 editosome protein, or tandem affinity purification based on a tagged RNA editing ligase. The newly identified proteins have ribonuclease and/or RNA binding motifs suggesting nuclease function for at least some of these. Five of the proteins are interrelated, as are two others, and one is related to four previously identified editosome proteins. The implications of these findings are discussed
