Impurity resonance states in electron-doped high T_c superconductors
Two scenarios, i.e., the anisotropic s-wave pairing (the s-wave scenario) and
the d-wave pairing coexisting with antiferromagnetism (the coexisting scenario)
have been introduced to understand some of seemingly s-wave like behaviors in
electron doped cuprates. We considered the electronic structure in the presence
of a nonmagnetic impurity in the coexistence scenario. We found that even if
the AF order opens a full gap in quasi-particle excitation spectra, the mid-gap
resonant peaks in local density of states (LDoS) around an impurity can still
be observed in the presence of a d-wave pairing gap. The features of the
impurity states in the coexisting phase are markedly different from the pure AF
or pure d-wave pairing phases, showing the unique role of the coexisting AF and
d-wave pairing orders. On the other hand, it is known that in the pure s-wave
case no mid-gap states can be induced by a nonmagnetic impurity. Therefore we
proposed that the response to a nonmagnetic impurity can be used to
differentiate the two scenarios.Comment: 5 pages, two-column revtex4, 5 figures, author list correcte

Diverging asymmetry of intrinsic functional organization in autism
Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition involving atypical sensory-perceptual functions together with language and socio-cognitive deficits. Previous work has reported subtle alterations in the asymmetry of brain structure and reduced laterality of functional activation in individuals with autism relative to non-autistic individuals (NAI). However, whether functional asymmetries show altered intrinsic systematic organization in autism remains unclear. Here, we examined inter- and intra-hemispheric asymmetry of intrinsic functional gradients capturing connectome organization along three axes, stretching between sensory-default, somatomotor-visual, and default-multiple demand networks, to study system-level hemispheric imbalances in autism. We observed decreased leftward functional asymmetry of language network organization in individuals with autism, relative to NAI. Whereas language network asymmetry varied across age groups in NAI, this was not the case in autism, suggesting atypical functional laterality in autism may result from altered developmental trajectories. Finally, we observed that intra- but not inter-hemispheric features were predictive of the severity of autistic traits. Our findings illustrate how regional and patterned functional lateralization is altered in autism at the system level. Such differences may be rooted in atypical developmental trajectories of functional organization asymmetry in autism
Spectra of Free Diquark in the Bethe-Salpeter Approach
In this work, we employ the Bethe-Salpeter (B-S) equation to investigate the
spectra of free diquarks and their B-S wave functions. We find that the B-S
approach can be consistently applied to study the diqaurks with two heavy
quarks or one heavy and one light quarks, but for two light-quark systems, the
results are not reliable. There are a few free parameters in the whole scenario
which can only be fixed phenomenologically. Thus, to determine them, one has to
study baryons which are composed of quarks and diquarks.Comment: 16 pages, no figure
Medial temporal lobe function during emotional memory in early Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment and healthy ageing:an fMRI study
Background: Relative to intentional memory encoding, which quickly declines in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), incidental memory for emotional stimuli appears to deteriorate more slowly. We hypothesised that tests of incidental emotional memory may inform on different aspects of cognitive decline in MCI and AD.Methods: Patients with MCI, AD and Healthy Controls (HC) were asked to attend to emotional pictures (i.e., positive and neutral) sequentially presented during an fMRI session. Attention was monitored behaviourally. A surprise post-scan recognition test was then administered. Results: The groups remained attentive within the scanner. The post-scan recognition pattern was in the form of (HC = MCI) > AD, with only the former group showing a clear benefit from emotional pictures. fMRI analysis of incidental encoding demonstrated clusters of activation in para-hippocampal regions and in the hippocampus in HC and MCI patients but not in AD patients. The pattern of activation observed in MCI patients tended to be greater than that found in HC.Conclusions: The results suggest that incidental emotional memory might offer a suitable platform to investigate, using behavioural and fMRI measures, subtle changes in the process of developing AD. These changes seem to differ from those found using standard episodic memory tests. The underpinnings of such differences and the potential clinical use of this methodology are discussed in depth.</p
Weakly Nonlinear AC Response: Theory and Application
We report a microscopic and general theoretical formalism for electrical
response which is appropriate for both DC and AC weakly nonlinear quantum
transport. The formalism emphasizes the electron-electron interaction and
maintains current conservation and gauge invariance. It makes a formal
connection between linear response and scattering matrix theory at the weakly
nonlinear level. We derive the dynamic conductance and predict the
nonlinear-nonequilibrium charge distribution. The definition of a nonlinear
capacitance leads to a remarkable scaling relation which can be measured to
give microscopic information about a conductor
Symplectic quantization of self-dual master Lagrangian
We consider the master Lagrangian of Deser and Jackiw, interpolating between
the self-dual and the Maxwell-Chern-Simons Lagrangian, and quantize it
following the symplectic approach, as well as the traditional Dirac scheme. We
demonstrate the equivalence of these procedures in the subspace of the
second-class constraints. We then proceed to embed this mixed first- and
second-class system into an extended first-class system within the framework of
both approaches, and construct the corresponding generator for this extended
gauge symmetry in both formulations.Comment: 27 page
External antenna design for GPS signal reception enhancement
The working paper explains the detailed analysis of the low-cost design and implementation of 53.0 × 41.0 mm Single Microstrip Patch Antenna (SMPA) for handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver external use. A Computer Simulation Technology (CST) microwave studio technique was applied, using the dielectric of 5.0 and substrate thickness of 1.6 mm. The SMPA designed for data acquisition application operating on a single frequency on 1.57542 GHz. The antenna gain enhancement and the signal reception have improved the receiver line-of-sight (LOS) for an indoors experimental usage. However, the external antenna gain overcomes raw data quality degradation caused by the internal antenna due to low elevation angle and results in non LO
Experimental observation of topological Fermi arcs in type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2
Weyl semimetal is a new quantum state of matter [1-12] hosting the condensed
matter physics counterpart of relativisticWeyl fermion [13] originally
introduced in high energy physics. The Weyl semimetal realized in the TaAs
class features multiple Fermi arcs arising from topological surface states [10,
11, 14-16] and exhibits novel quantum phenomena, e.g., chiral anomaly induced
negative mag-netoresistance [17-19] and possibly emergent supersymmetry [20].
Recently it was proposed theoretically that a new type (type-II) of Weyl
fermion [21], which does not have counterpart in high energy physics due to the
breaking of Lorentz invariance, can emerge as topologically-protected touching
between electron and hole pockets. Here, we report direct spectroscopic
evidence of topological Fermi arcs in the predicted type-II Weyl semimetal
MoTe2 [22-24]. The topological surface states are confirmed by directly
observing the surface states using bulk-and surface-sensitive angle-resolved
photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and the quasi-particle interference (QPI)
pattern between the two putative Fermi arcs in scanning tunneling microscopy
(STM). Our work establishes MoTe2 as the first experimental realization of
type-II Weyl semimetal, and opens up new opportunities for probing novel
phenomena such as exotic magneto-transport [21] in type-II Weyl semimetals.Comment: submitted on 01/29/2016. Nature Physics, in press. Spectroscopic

GPS Signal Strength Due to Ionospheric Scintillation: Preliminary Models Over Sarawak
The renowned effect of space weather is fluctuation in
the amplitude of the radio signal that propagates in the
ionosphere especially in the equatorial region. This fluctuation is
also referred to as scintillation that will intense, degrades the
signal quality, reduce the information content, or cause failure of
the signal reception. Space-based radio navigation systems such
as the Global Positioning System (GPS) will provide us with a
unique opportunity to characterize the ionospheric scintillation
effect as the signals propagate from the satellites to the GPS
receiver. Sarawak, which is located near to the equatorial region,
has been selected for the aim of this research. By using amplitude
scintillation data recorded by the GPS Ionospheric Scintillation
& TEC Monitor (GISTM), ionospheric irregularities along the
path was examined and related to the signal strength
performance. Methods and procedures to study and analyze the
amplitude scintillation data are presented. Furthermore, the
amplitude scintillation parameter is related to signal-to-noise
ratio (SNR) in order to model the GPS satellite signal strength in
this region. The preliminary developed SNR empirical models
are a function of amplitude scintillation from the reference
station path to the satellites. These contribute to the knowledge of
received satellite signals strength performance in terms of
ionospheric amplitude scintillation
