The versatility of a truss mounted mobile transporter for in-space construction
The Mobile Transporter (MT) evolution from early erectable structures assembly activities is detailed. The MT operational features which are required to support astronauts performing on-orbit structure construction or spacecraft assembly functions are presented and discussed. Use of the MT to perform a variety of assembly functions is presented. Estimated EVA assembly times for a precision segmented reflector approximately 20 m in diameter are presented. The EVA/MT technique under study for construction of the reflector (and the entire spacecraft) is illustrated. Finally, the current status of development activities and test results involving the MT and Space Station structural assembly are presented
Albumin concentrations are primarily determined by the body cell mass and the systemic inflammatory response in cancer patients with weight loss
The association between hypoalbuminemia and poor prognosis in patients with cancer is well recognized. However, the factors that contribute to the fall in albumin concentrations are not well understood. In the present study, we examined the relationship between circulating albumin concentrations, weight loss, the body cell mass (measured using total body potassium), and the presence of an inflammatory response (measured using C- reactive protein) in male patients (n=40) with advanced lung or gastrointestinal cancer. Albumin concentrations were significantly correlated with the percent ideal body weight (r=0.390, p lt 0.05), extent of reported weight loss (r=-0.492, p lt 0.01), percent predicted total body potassium (adjusted for age, height, and weight, r=0.686, p lt 0.001), and logo C-reactive protein concentrations (r=-0.545, p lt 0.001). On multiple regression analysis, the percent predicted total body potassium and log(10) C-reactive protein concentrations accounted for 63% of the variation in albumin concentrations (r(2) = 0.626, p lt 0.001). The interrelationship between albumin, body cell mass, and the inflammatory response is consistent with the concept that the presence of an ongoing inflammatory response contributes to the progressive loss of these vital protein components of the body and the subsequent death of patients with advanced cancer
Tests of an alternate mobile transporter and extravehicular activity assembly procedure for the Space Station Freedom truss
Results are presented from a ground test program of an alternate mobile transporter (MT) concept and extravehicular activity (EVA) assembly procedure for the Space Station Freedom (SSF) truss keel. A three-bay orthogonal tetrahedral truss beam consisting of 44 2-in-diameter struts and 16 nodes was assembled repeatedly in neutral buoyancy by pairs of pressure-suited test subjects working from astronaut positioning devices (APD's) on the MT. The truss bays were cubic with edges 15 ft long. All the truss joint hardware was found to be EVA compatible. The average unit assembly time for a single pair of experienced test subjects was 27.6 sec/strut, which is about half the time derived from other SSF truss assembly tests. A concept for integration of utility trays during truss assembly is introduced and demonstrated in the assembly tests. The concept, which requires minimal EVA handling of the trays, is shown to have little impact on overall assembly time. The results of these tests indicate that by using an MT equipped with APD's, rapid EVA assembly of a space station-size truss structure can be expected
A Portrait of North Carolina School District Superintendents, 2000-2021
This study profiles superintendents in North Carolina public-school districts for academic year 2020-2021. We focus on superintendent gender, race, educational experiences, highest degrees earned, and professional longevity; and personal characteristics such as age and marital and parenting status, and the relationship between gender and race and geographic region served.
Data sources included a survey of all of North Carolina’s public-school district human resources directors; licensure and payroll records from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) for the years 2000, 2010, and 2021; and The American Superintendent: 2020 Decennial Study from the American Association of School Administrators.
Despite progress, we found significant disparities between superintendent demographics and their communities. Amid growing diversity, only 26% of public- school districts were led by females and 22% percent by an African American or Latinx. We also noted high turnover, inexperience, and interim appointments as red flags. We recommend actionable steps for research, policy, and practice
Orbital parameters of supergiant fast X-ray transients
Supergiant fast X-ray transient (SFXT) is a new class of the high mass X-ray
binary that shows short X-ray flares. The physical mechanism of SFXT short
flares is still open for discussion. The accretion process of dense clumps in
stellar wind onto neutron star (NS) has been proposed as the origin of such
short flares. In order to examine the applicability of the clumpy wind
scenario, we focus on the accretion mode that depends on orbital parameters.
Our goal is to impose restrictions on the orbital parameters of SFXT. Assuming
a simple analytic model of clumpy wind, we investigate the condition where the
size of accretion cylinder overcomes the clump size. The allowed parameter
region for SFXT is restricted in a relatively narrow window in diagram. Binary systems with large eccentricities (e \ga 0.4) and moderate
orbital periods ( d) are prone to show periodic X-ray
outbursts which are characteristic for SFXT. We confirm that systems with a
long orbital period of more than 100 days cannot produce bright X-ray flares in

Dust grain growth in the interstellar medium of 5<z<6.5 quasars
We investigate whether stellar dust sources i.e. asymptotic giant branch
(AGB) stars and supernovae (SNe) can account for dust detected in 5<z<6.5
quasars (QSOs). We calculate the required dust yields per AGB star and per SN
using the dust masses of QSOs inferred from their millimeter emission and
stellar masses approximated as the difference between the dynamical and the H_2
gas masses of these objects. We find that AGB stars are not efficient enough to
form dust in the majority of the z>5 QSOs, whereas SNe may be able to account
for dust in some QSOs. However, they require very high dust yields even for a
top-heavy initial mass function. This suggests additional non-stellar dust
formation mechanism e.g. significant dust grain growth in the interstellar
medium of at least three out of nine z>5 QSOs. SNe (but not AGB stars) may

Results of EVA/mobile transporter space station truss assembly tests
Underwater neutral buoyance tests were conducted to evaluate the use of a Mobile Transporter concept in conjunction with EVA astronauts to construct the Space Station Freedom truss structure. A three-bay orthogonal tetrahedral truss configuration with a 15 foot square cross section was repeatedly assembled by a single pair of pressure suited test subjects working from the Mobile Transporter astronaut positioning devices (mobile foot restraints). The average unit assembly time (which included integrated installation of utility trays) was 27.6 s/strut, or 6 min/bay. The results of these tests indicate that EVA assembly of space station size structures can be significantly enhanced when using a Mobile Transporter equipped with astronaut positioning devices. Rapid assembly time can be expected and are dependent primarily on the rate of translation permissible for on-orbit operations. The concept used to demonstate integrated installation of utility trays requires minimal EVA handling and consequentially, as the results show, has little impact on overall assembly time
Primaquine in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency: an adaptive pharmacometric assessment of ascending dose regimens in healthy volunteers
Background: Primaquine is an 8-aminoquinoline antimalarial. It is the only widely available treatment to prevent relapses of Plasmodium vivax malaria. The 8-aminoquinolines cause dose-dependent haemolysis in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PDd). G6PDd is common in malaria endemic areas but testing is often not available. As a consequence primaquine is underused.
Methods: We conducted an adaptive pharmacometric study to characterise the relationship between primaquine dose and haemolysis in G6PDd. The aim was to explore shorter and safer primaquine radical cure regimens compared to the currently recommended 8-weekly regimen (0.75 mg/kg once weekly), potentially obviating the need for G6PD testing. Hemizygous G6PDd healthy adult Thai and Burmese male volunteers were admitted to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Bangkok. In Part 1, volunteers were given ascending dose primaquine regimens whereby daily doses were increased from 7.5 mg up to 45 mg over 15–20 days. In Part 2 conducted at least 6 months later, a single primaquine 45 mg dose was given.
Results: 24 volunteers were enrolled in Part 1, and 16 in Part 2 (13 participated in both studies). In three volunteers, the ascending dose regimen was stopped because of haemolysis (n=1) and asymptomatic increases in transaminases (n=2; one was hepatitis E positive). Otherwise the ascending regimens were well tolerated with no drug-related serious adverse events. In Part 1, the median haemoglobin concentration decline was 3.7 g/dL (range: 2.1–5.9; relative decline of 26% [range: 15–40%]). Primaquine doses up to 0.87 mg/kg/day were tolerated subsequently without clinically significant further falls in haemoglobin. In Part 2, the median haemoglobin concentration decline was 1.7 g/dL (range 0.9–4.1; relative fall of 12% [range: 7–30% decrease]). The ascending dose primaquine regimens gave seven times more drug but resulted in only double the haemoglobin decline.
Conclusions: In patients with Southeast Asian G6PDd variants, full radical cure treatment can be given in under 3 weeks compared with the current 8-week regimen.

Spitzer Analysis of HII Region Complexes in the Magellanic Clouds: Determining a Suitable Monochromatic Obscured Star Formation Indicator
HII regions are the birth places of stars, and as such they provide the best
measure of current star formation rates (SFRs) in galaxies. The close proximity
of the Magellanic Clouds allows us to probe the nature of these star forming
regions at small spatial scales. We aim to determine the monochromatic IR band
that most accurately traces the bolometric IR flux (TIR), which can then be
used to estimate an obscured SFR. We present the spatial analysis, via
aperture/annulus photometry, of 16 LMC and 16 SMC HII region complexes using
the Spitzer IRAC and MIPS bands. UV rocket data and SHASSA H-alpha data are
also included. We find that nearly all of the LMC and SMC HII region SEDs peak
around 70um, from ~10 to ~400 pc from the central sources. As a result, the
sizes of HII regions as probed by 70um is approximately equal to the sizes as
probed by TIR (about 70 pc in radius); the radial profile of the 70um flux,
normalized by TIR, is constant at all radii (70um ~ 0.45 TIR); the 1-sigma
standard deviation of the 70um fluxes, normalized by TIR, is a lower fraction
of the mean (0.05 to 0.12 out to ~220 pc) than the normalized 8, 24, and 160um
normalized fluxes (0.12 to 0.52); and these results are invariant between the
LMC and SMC. From these results, we argue that 70um is the most suitable IR
band to use as a monochromatic obscured star formation indicator because it
most accurately reproduces the TIR of HII regions in the LMC and SMC and over
large spatial scales. We also explore the general trends of the 8, 24, 70, and
160um bands in the LMC and SMC HII region SEDs, radial surface brightness
profiles, sizes, and normalized (by TIR) radial flux profiles. We derive an
obscured SFR equation that is modified from the literature to use 70um
luminosity, SFR(Mo/yr) = 9.7(0.7)x10^{-44} L(70)(ergs/s), which is applicable
