Fantasy proneness and counterfactual thinking
Counterfactual thinking (CFT; mentally simulating alternatives to reality) is central to learning and motivation. Two studies explored the relationship between CFT and fantasy proneness, a personality trait typified by excessive fantasies hard to distinguish from reality. In study1, participants completed a fictional diary entry which was used to measure spontaneous CFT and the Creative Experiences Questionnaire measure of fantasy proneness. Fantasy proneness was significantly correlated with the generation of counterfactual thoughts. Both CFT and fantasy proneness have been independently associated with low mood and study2 included a measure of negative emotional state (the Depression, Anxiety and Stress scale) in addition to the CEQ and CFT. Fantasy proneness and negative emotion both predicted CFT, but no interaction between them was observed. The results suggest that individuals high in fantasy proneness have a general tendency to think counterfactually. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd
The Transmission of Courtly Lifestyles in the Bronze Age Eastern Mediterranean
This thesis offers and applies a new theoretical and methodological framework for understanding the diplomatic relationships between the ancient court societies in the Bronze Age Eastern Mediterranean (Egypt, Upper Nubia, Levant, Anatolia, and the Aegean) with particular focus on the Middle Bronze Age covering first half of the 2nd millennium BC. Previous scholarship on diplomacy has largely concentrated on the philological analyses of Late Bronze Age diplomatic texts and the artistic styles of luxury visual arts, attempting to identify the origins of specific artistic styles and correlate gift lists with actual material objects. This thesis departs from these prior studies by adopting a more firmly sociological and anthropological approach, focusing on the social and ceremonial contexts of diplomatic activity. In particular, the role of etiquette (ritualized and codified forms of behavior) in diplomacy is the primary focus. Via a holistic analysis incorporating material culture, texts, and art, the thesis discusses how forms of etiquette can be reconstructed from the archaeological record, if forms of etiquette transmission can be identified, and the extent to which these transmissions can be used to reconstruct diplomatic relationships
The quasar Q0957+561: Lensed CO emission from a disk at z~1.4?
In recent years large efforts have been made to detect molecular gas towards
high redshifted objects. Up to now the literature reports on only two cases of
CO-detection in quasars at a redshift between 1 and 2 - Q0957+561, a
gravitationally lensed system at z=1.41 (Planesas et al. 1999), and HR10 at
z=1.44 (Andreani et al. 2000). According to Planesas et al. (1999), 12CO(2-1)
emission was detected towards both the lensed images of Q0957+561 with the IRAM
Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI). In contrast to the optical spectra of
the two images which support the idea that they are images of one and the same
object, the CO-spectra were surprisingly different: the southern image (named
CO-B) shows a single blueshifted line whereas a double-peaked line profile with
a blue- and a redshifted part appears towards the northern image (CO-A). Based
on the observations and on simulations with a gravitational lens program, we
are tempted to argue that the line profile traces the presence of molecular gas
of a disk in the host galaxy around the quasar. We have now new observations
with the PdBI providing the necessary sensitivity to corroborate our disk

Reliable microsatellite genotyping of the Eurasian badger (Meles meles) using faecal DNA
The potential link between badgers and bovine tuberculosis has made it vital to develop
accurate techniques to census badgers. Here we investigate the potential of using genetic
profiles obtained from faecal DNA as a basis for population size estimation. After trialling
several methods we obtained a high amplification success rate (89%) by storing faeces in
70% ethanol and using the guanidine thiocyanate/silica method for extraction. Using 70%
ethanol as a storage agent had the advantage of it being an antiseptic. In order to obtain reliable
genotypes with fewer amplification reactions than the standard multiple-tubes
approach, we devised a comparative approach in which genetic profiles were compared
and replication directed at similar, but not identical, genotypes. This modified method
achieved a reduction in polymerase chain reactions comparable with the maximumlikelihood
model when just using reliability criteria, and was slightly better when using
reliability criteria with the additional proviso that alleles must be observed twice to be considered
reliable. Our comparative approach would be best suited for studies that include
multiple faeces from each individual. We utilized our approach in a well-studied population
of badgers from which individuals had been sampled and reliable genotypes obtained.
In a study of 53 faeces sampled from three social groups over 10 days, we found that direct
enumeration could not be used to estimate population size, but that the application of
mark–recapture models has the potential to provide more accurate results

The hot and cold interstellar matter of early type galaxies and their radio emission
Over the last few years, the knowledge of the interstellar matter (ISM) of early type galaxies has increased dramatically. Many early type galaxies are now known to have ISM in three different phases: cold (neutral hydrogen (HI), dust and molecular material), warm (ionized) and hot (S-ray emitting) gas. Early type galaxies have smaller masses of cold ISM (10 to the 7th power - 10 to the 8th power solar mass; Jura et al. 1987) than later type spiral galaxies, while they have far more hot gas (10 to the 9th power - 10 to the tenth power solar mass; Forman et al. 1985, Canizares et al. 1987). Differential electrographic signatures generated by mechanistically-diverse seizurogenic compounds in the larval zebrafish brain.

We assessed similarities and differences in the electrographic signatures of local field potentials (LFPs) evoked by different pharmacological agents in zebrafish larvae. We then compared and contrasted these characteristics with what is known from electrophysiological studies of seizures and epilepsy in mammals, including humans. Ultimately, our aim was to phenotype neurophysiological features of drug-induced seizures in larval zebrafish for expanding knowledge on the translational potential of this valuable alternative to mammalian models. LFPs were recorded from the midbrain of 4-d-old zebrafish larvae exposed to a pharmacologically diverse panel of seizurogenic compounds, and the outputs of these recordings were assessed using frequency domain analysis. This included analysis of changes occurring within various spectral frequency bands of relevance to mammalian CNS circuit pathophysiology. From these analyses, there were clear differences in the frequency spectra of drug-exposed LFPs, relative to controls, many of which shared notable similarities with the signatures exhibited by mammalian CNS circuits. These similarities included the presence of specific frequency components comparable to those observed in mammalian studies of seizures and epilepsy. Collectively, the data presented provide important information to support the value of larval zebrafish as an alternative model for the study of seizures and epilepsy. Foot pain and foot health in an educated population of adults: results from the Glasgow Caledonian University Alumni Foot Health Survey
Abstract Background Foot pain is common amongst the general population and impacts negatively on physical function and quality of life. Associations between personal health characteristics, lifestyle/behaviour factors and foot pain have been studied; however, the role of wider determinants of health on foot pain have received relatively little attention. Objectives of this study are i) to describe foot pain and foot health characteristics in an educated population of adults; ii) to explore associations between moderate-to-severe foot pain and a variety of factors including gender, age, medical conditions/co-morbidity/multi-morbidity, key indicators of general health, foot pathologies, and social determinants of health; and iii) to evaluate associations between moderate-to-severe foot pain and foot function, foot health and health-related quality-of-life. Methods Between February and March 2018, Glasgow Caledonian University Alumni with a working email address were invited to participate in the cross-sectional electronic survey (anonymously) by email via the Glasgow Caledonian University Alumni Office. The survey was constructed using the REDCap secure web online survey application and sought information on presence/absence of moderate-to-severe foot pain, patient characteristics (age, body mass index, socioeconomic status, occupation class, comorbidities, and foot pathologies). Prevalence data were expressed as absolute frequencies and percentages. Multivariate logistic and linear regressions were undertaken to identify associations 1) between independent variables and moderate-to-severe foot pain, and 2) between moderate-to-severe foot pain and foot function, foot health and health-related quality of life. Results Of 50,228 invitations distributed, there were 7707 unique views and 593 valid completions (median age [inter-quartile range] 42 [31–52], 67.3% female) of the survey (7.7% response rate). The sample was comprised predominantly of white Scottish/British (89.4%) working age adults (95%), the majority of whom were overweight or obese (57.9%), and in either full-time or part-time employment (82.5%) as professionals (72.5%). Over two-thirds (68.5%) of the sample were classified in the highest 6 deciles (most affluent) of social deprivation. Moderate-to-severe foot pain affected 236/593 respondents (39.8%). High body mass index, presence of bunions, back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, hip pain and lower occupation class were included in the final multivariate model and all were significantly and independently associated with moderate-to-severe foot pain (p < 0.05), except for rheumatoid arthritis (p = 0.057). Moderate-to-severe foot pain was significantly and independently associated lower foot function, foot health and health-related quality of life scores following adjustment for age, gender and body mass index (p < 0.05). Conclusions Moderate-to-severe foot pain was highly prevalent in a university-educated population and was independently associated with female gender, high body mass index, bunions, back pain, hip pain and lower occupational class. Presence of moderate-to-severe foot pain was associated with worse scores for foot function, foot health and health-related quality-of-life. Education attainment does not appear to be protective against moderate-to-severe foot pain
