Compression and intelligence: social environments and communication
Compression has been advocated as one of the principles which pervades inductive inference and prediction - and, from there, it has also been recurrent in definitions and tests of intelligence. However, this connection is less explicit in new approaches to intelligence. In this paper, we advocate that the notion of compression can appear again in definitions and tests of intelligence through the concepts of `mind-readingÂż and `communicationÂż in the context of multi-agent systems and social environments. Our main position is that two-part Minimum Message Length (MML) compression is not only more natural and effective for agents with limited resources, but it is also much more appropriate for agents in (co-operative) social environments than one-part compression schemes - particularly those using a posterior-weighted mixture of all available models following SolomonoffÂżs theory of prediction. We think that the realisation of these differences is important to avoid a naive view of `intelligence as compressionÂż in favour of a better understanding of how, why and where (one-part or two-part, lossless or lossy) compression is needed.We thank the anonymous reviewers for their helpful comments, and we thank Kurt Kleiner for some challenging and ultimately very

Single Spin Measurement using Single Electron Transistors to Probe Two Electron Systems
We present a method for measuring single spins embedded in a solid by probing
two electron systems with a single electron transistor (SET). Restrictions
imposed by the Pauli Principle on allowed two electron states mean that the
spin state of such systems has a profound impact on the orbital states
(positions) of the electrons, a parameter which SET's are extremely well suited
to measure. We focus on a particular system capable of being fabricated with
current technology: a Te double donor in Si adjacent to a Si/SiO2 interface and
lying directly beneath the SET island electrode, and we outline a measurement
strategy capable of resolving single electron and nuclear spins in this system.
We discuss the limitations of the measurement imposed by spin scattering
arising from fluctuations emanating from the SET and from lattice phonons. We
conclude that measurement of single spins, a necessary requirement for several
proposed quantum computer architectures, is feasible in Si using this strategy.Comment: 22 Pages, 8 Figures; revised version contains updated references and

QCD Sum Rules and Applications to Nuclear Physics
Applications of QCD sum-rule methods to the physics of nuclei are reviewed,
with an emphasis on calculations of baryon self-energies in infinite nuclear
matter. The sum-rule approach relates spectral properties of hadrons
propagating in the finite-density medium, such as optical potentials for
quasinucleons, to matrix elements of QCD composite operators (condensates). The
vacuum formalism for QCD sum rules is generalized to finite density, and the
strategy and implementation of the approach is discussed. Predictions for
baryon self-energies are compared to those suggested by relativistic nuclear
physics phenomenology. Sum rules for vector mesons in dense nuclear matter are

Outside in-group and out-group identities? Constructing male solidarity and female exclusion in UK buildersâ talk
This article examines the spoken interactions of a group of British construction workers to discover whether it is possible to identify a distinctive âbuildersâ discourseâ. Given that builders work for a mostly all-male profession (Curjao, 2006), we ask whether the ways in which male builders converse with each other while âon the jobâ can be held in any way responsible for the under-representation of women within this major occupational sector in the UK. This article reports on a case study of the conversations of three white, working-class, male builders, which took place while travelling in a truck between different building sites. This forms part of a larger ethnographic study of buildersâ discourse in different work locations. The analysis shows that male builders are highly collaborative in constructing narratives of in-group and out-group identities (Duszak, 2002; Tajfel, 1978). Various other male groups are demonized in these conversations: Polish immigrant builders, rude clients and rival builders. However, there is almost no reference to women. The article concludes that women are viewed as so unthreatening to male ascendancy in the building industry that they do not even feature within the âout-groupâ
Being, Becoming and the Undivided Universe: A Dialogue between Relational Blockworld and the Implicate Order Concerning the Unification of Relativity and Quantum Theory
In this paper two different approaches to unification will be compared,
Relational Blockworld (RBW) and Hiley's implicate order. Both approaches are
monistic in that they attempt to derive matter and spacetime geometry 'at once'
in an interdependent and background independent fashion from something
underneath both quantum theory and relativity. Hiley's monism resides in the
implicate order via Clifford algebras and is based on process as fundamental
while RBW's monism resides in spacetimematter via path integrals over graphs
whereby space, time and matter are co-constructed per a global constraint
equation. RBW's monism therefore resides in being (relational blockworld) while
that of Hiley's resides in becoming (elementary processes). Regarding the
derivation of quantum theory and relativity, the promises and pitfalls of both
approaches will be elaborated. Finally, special attention will be paid as to
how Hiley's process account might avoid the blockworld implications of

The ecogenetic link between demography and evolution : can we bridge the gap between theory and data?
Calls to understand the links between ecology and evolution have been common for decades. Population dynamics, i.e. the demographic changes in populations, arise from life history decisions of individuals and thus are a product of selection, and selection, on the contrary, can be modified by such dynamical properties of the population as density and stability. It follows that generating predictions and testing them correctly requires considering this ecogenetic feedback loop whenever traits have demographic consequences, mediated via density dependence (or frequency dependence). This is not an easy challenge, and arguably theory has advanced at a greater pace than empirical research. However, theory would benefit from more interaction between related fields, as is evident in the many near-synonymous names that the ecogenetic loop has attracted. We also list encouraging examples where empiricists have shown feasible ways of addressing the question, ranging from advanced data analysis to experiments and comparative analyses of phylogenetic data
Extent and Causes of Chesapeake Bay Warming
Coastal environments such as the Chesapeake Bay have long been impacted by eutrophication stressors resulting from human activities, and these impacts are now being compounded by global warming trends. However, there are few studies documenting long-term estuarine temperature change and the relative contributions of rivers, the atmosphere, and the ocean. In this study, Chesapeake Bay warming, since 1985, is quantified using a combination of cruise observations and model outputs, and the relative contributions to that warming are estimated via numerical sensitivity experiments with a watershedâestuarine modeling system. Throughout the Bayâs main stem, similar warming rates are found at the surface and bottom between the late 1980s and late 2010s (0.02 +/- 0.02C/year, mean +/- 1 standard error), with elevated summer rates (0.04 +/- 0.01C/year) and lower rates of winter warming (0.01 +/- 0.01C/year). Most (~85%) of this estuarine warming is driven by atmospheric effects. The secondary influence of ocean warming increases with proximity to the Bay mouth, where it accounts for more than half of summer warming in bottom waters. Sea level rise has slightly reduced summer warming, and the influence of riverine warming has been limited to the heads of tidal tributaries. Future rates of warming in Chesapeake Bay will depend not only on global atmospheric trends, but also on regional circulation patterns in mid-Atlantic waters, which are currently warming faster than the atmosphere.

Whole genome sequence analyses of eGFR in 23,732 people representing multiple ancestries in the NHLBI trans-omics for precision medicine (TOPMed) consortium
Background: Genetic factors that influence kidney traits have been understudied for low frequency and ancestry-specific variants. Methods: We combined whole genome sequencing (WGS) data from 23,732 participants from 10 NHLBI Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) Program multi-ethnic studies to identify novel loci for estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Participants included European, African, East Asian, and Hispanic ancestries. We applied linear mixed models using a genetic relationship matrix estimated from the WGS data and adjusted for age, sex, study, and ethnicity. Findings: When testing single variants, we identified three novel loci driven by low frequency variants more commonly observed in non-European ancestry (PRKAA2, rs180996919, minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.04%, P = 6.1 Ă 10â11; METTL8, rs116951054, MAF 0.09%, P = 4.5 Ă 10â9; and MATK, rs539182790, MAF 0.05%, P = 3.4 Ă 10â9). We also replicated two known loci for common variants (rs2461702, MAF=0.49, P = 1.2 Ă 10â9, nearest gene GATM, and rs71147340, MAF=0.34, P = 3.3 Ă 10â9, CDK12). Testing aggregated variants within a gene identified the MAF gene. A statistical approach based on local ancestry helped to identify replication samples for ancestry-specific variants. Interpretation: This study highlights challenges in studying variants influencing kidney traits that are low frequency in populations and more common in non-European ancestry
