    A stationary free boundary problem modeling electrostatic MEMS

    A free boundary problem describing small deformations in a membrane based model of electrostatically actuated MEMS is investigated. The existence of stationary solutions is established for small voltage values. A justification of the widely studied narrow-gap model is given by showing that steady state solutions of the free boundary problem converge toward stationary solutions of the narrow-gap model when the aspect ratio of the device tends to zero

    The Calf Value Discovery Program (CVD) allows cow‐calf producers to gain knowledge of the finishing segment of the beef cattle industry and the marketing of fed cattle. Specifically, CVD provides an opportunity for cow‐calf producers to learn how their calves perform in a feedlot and their carcass value when sold in a value‐based marketing system. Each producer taking part in the program could consign 5 or more steers weighing between 500 and 800 pounds to the CVD program. Animals were finished at VanderWal Yards (Bruce, SD) in a calf‐fed program using typical diets and management protocols. Carcass and feedlot performance information from calves were returned to producers for use in making future management decisions to improve profitability

    Comparison of Two Different Methods to Harvest Drought‐Damaged Corn

    Two methods of harvesting drought‐stressed corn as large round bales were compared in this study. Three acres of drought‐stressed corn were cut and either baled as high‐moisture bales and wrapped in plastic (BALEAGE), or allowed to completely dry and baled with a conventional large round baler (DRY). Core samples were analyzed for moisture, CP, ADF, NDF and in vitro NDF and DM digestibility. Samples from the BALEAGE treatment were lower in CP than those from the DRY treatment. Concentrations of ADF and NDF did not differ between BALEAGE and DRY. Dry matter and NDF digestibility were also similar between the treatments. The challenges of physically handling the bales from the BALEAGE treatment and in maintaining the integrity of the plastic barrier limit the usefulness of this technique compared to either chopping the corn for silage or harvesting the corn as dry, large round bales

    Students with specific learning disabilities experiences of pre-registration physiotherapy education: a qualitative study.

    Background Attainment gaps for students with disabilities have been noted in pre-registration physiotherapy courses in the UK. Previous research suggests disclosure, lack of staff knowledge and poor communication between University and placement sites may be relevant, but these are limited to small case studies with students with visual or physical disabilities. The purpose of this study was to explore disabled physiotherapy students’ experiences of their education in order to elucidate factors that may influence success. Methods Qualitative study drawing on phenomenological traditions. Four focus groups including 15 students with disabilities were conducted. Transcripts were analysed thematically. Procedures for transparency and rigour such as member checking and peer debriefing were implemented. Results Three major themes were derived from data. “It was quite a relief” explores the personal and social implications of diagnosis. “They’re not natural” focuses on academic assessment and the specifics of adjustments made and not made within that context. “My dyslexia doesn’t switch off” explores the inaccessibility of the learning environment and dissects the contrast between the 24-h nature of having a specific learning condition and the somewhat piecemeal nature of adjustments during their education. Conclusions This study indicates that having a specific learning disability or anxiety creates a number of hurdles to success in physiotherapy education. Most were within the University setting and were perceived to result from staff ignorance or piecemeal approaches to inclusion. A lack of consistency alongside facilitated dialogue and acknowledgement of enhancements results in frustration, ambiguity towards disclosure and reinforcement of a deficit model. Such an approach belies the intention of the profession and the NHS and does not maximise the potential of widening participation

    Working hard to belong: a qualitative study exploring students from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds experiences of pre-registration physiotherapy education

    Background Previous research has demonstrated that attainment inequalities exist for students from Black Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups in pre-registration physiotherapy education. While previous research has explored students from BAME backgrounds experience of university, the context of physiotherapy is unique and is under researched. Therefore the purpose of this study was to explore BAME student experiences during their physiotherapy training. Methods Using a phenomenological approach pre-registration BSc and MSc students from BAME backgrounds from two universities who had completed both academic and clinical modules were invited to participate. Focus groups followed a topic guide developed from the literature and were facilitated by physiotherapy educators from outside the host institution. They were digitally recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically. Analytical triangulation was adopted throughout the research process as a mechanism to enhance rigour. Results Seventeen students participated from a range of self-identified BAME backgrounds that were also representative of age, gender and course. Themes derived from the data included: feeling an outsider in reflections of belonging, behaviours by others that marginalise BAME and personal strategies to integrate in physiotherapy despite the lack of power and influence. Collectively these themes demonstrate a range of challenges which students from BAME backgrounds face within both an academic and practice learning environment. Conclusions While this may not be surprising based on other disciplines, this study demonstrates that studying physiotherapy as a student from BAME background requires persistence to overcome a series of many implicit challenges. Understanding the experiences of students from BAME backgrounds presents unique opportunities to educate the profession and co-create opportunities for a more diverse profession with practitioners and educators as role models. There is a need for greater training for educators to listen to these students’ voices and their stories, and understand where institutional structures and practices could be modified to enable BAME student inclusion in physiotherapy education and practice

    Influence of Propionate Salt Levels on Young Cow Reproductive Performance

    A supplementation study was conducted to evaluate level of propionate salt (Ca-propionate) on young cow performance over two years. One hundred-twenty cows were allocated to one of three treatments at calving. Propionate salt was incorporated in a protein supplement at a rate of 0, 80 or 160 g/d. Cows were individually supplemented twice weekly at 2 lbs/d. In year 1, cows had access to pasture and hay. In year 2, cows had access to a native range pasture. Blood was collected weekly and analyzed for progesterone (P4) to determine postpartum interval (≄1 ng P4/ml). Weights and body condition scores (BCS) were assigned at calving, end of supplementation, start of breeding season, and weaning. Cow weight and BCS changed over time through the study (P \u3c 0.01 but was not affected (P \u3e 0.10) by treatment. Calf weight was not different (P \u3e 0.10) between treatments. Calf weight increased through the study (P \u3c 0.01). Pregnancy rates did not differ between treatments (P \u3e 0.10 but were affected by cow age (P\u3c0.01, 77% and 100% for 2- and 3-year-olds, respectively). In year 1, the percentage of cows initiating estrous cycles before the breeding season was greater (P\u3c0.05) for cows receiving 160 g (47.6%) compared to 0 g (15.6%) of propionate salt and tended to be greater than cows receiving 80 g (P\u3c0.10, 20.0%). Based on ultrasonography, 3-year-old cows conceived earlier (P\u3c0.01, 184 d) than 2-year cows (207 d). In year 2, postpartum anestrous interval (P = 0.70), percentage of cows initiating estrous cycles before the breeding season (P = 0.54), conception rate to AI (P = 0.68), and season-long pregnancy rates (P = 0.87) were not different among treatments. In summary, propionate salt can influence reproductive performance, however, response is not consistent

    Walking Distance and Performance of Drylot Developed Beef Heifers Following Being Moved to a Grazing Situation

    Research has shown that heifers moved from a drylot to grass after AI have decreased weight gains and pregnancy success compared to heifers developed on range. This effect could potentially be due to inexperience in a specific grazing environment, which could result in greater time spent exploring a new environment. In this study beef heifers were moved from a drylot to spring grass at two different times and their activity compared. Heifers in a drylot walked less than heifers grazing spring forage. However, following being moved to spring forage heifers that had been adjusted to grass for about a month took fewer steps during their first four days of grazing then did the heifers that did not have previous grazing experience. Heifers without prior grazing experience also lost weight during this period. In summary, moving drylot developed heifers to spring forage affected performance and activity

    Climatological Radar Delineation of Urban Convection for Atlanta, Georgia

    The distribution of warm season (June through August) thunderstorm activity surrounding Atlanta, Georgia from 1997 to 2006 was determined utilizing composite reflectivity data obtained from the network of National Weather Service radars. The radar data, at 2 km and 5 min spatial and temporal resolutions, allows for high resolution analyses of urban convective trends when grid averaged over a 10-year period. Maxima of medium- to high-reflectivity episodes were identified to the north of and within downtown Atlanta and immediately east of the primary urban expansion of the central business district (CBD). Additional enhanced, high-reflectivity areas are found in southern Fulton and Clayton counties, located south of downtown Atlanta. These regions are also collocated with high-density urban expansion south of the Atlanta CBD. The research presented is the most comprehensive spatial and temporal analysis of grid averaged composite reflectivity data for urban convection conducted to date
