QCD thermodynamics with effective models
In this talk we extend the Polyakov-quark-meson model to N_f=2+1 quark
flavors and study its bulk thermodynamics at finite temperatures in mean-field
approximation. Three different Polyakov-loop potentials are considered. Our
findings are confronted to recent QCD lattice simulations of the RBC-Bielefeld
and HotQCD collaborations. Furthermore, the finite chemical potential expansion
of the quark-number susceptibility in a Taylor series around vanishing chemical
potential is analyzed. By means of a novel algorithmic differentiation
technique, we have calculated Taylor coefficients up to 24th order in the model
for the first time. This allows the systematic study of convergence properties
of the Taylor series.Comment: [references added]; 10 pages, 5 figures, talk given at the workshop

QCD Thermodynamics: Confronting the Polyakov-Quark-Meson Model with Lattice QCD
NJL-type effective models represent a low-energy realization of QCD and
incorporate pertinent aspects such as chiral symmetry and its spontaneous
breaking, the center symmetry in the heavy-quark limit as well as the axial
anomaly. One such model, the Polyakov-quark-meson model for three light quark
flavors, is introduced in order to study the phase structure of
strongly-interacting matter. With recent high-statistics lattice QCD
simulations of the finite-temperature equation of state, a detailed comparison
with model results becomes accessible. Such comparisons allow to estimate
volume and truncation effects of quantities, obtained on the lattice and
provide possible lattice extrapolation procedures to finite chemical potential
which are important to locate a critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, contributed to the proceedings of the EMMI

On the efficient computation of high-order derivatives for implicitly defined functions
Scientific studies often require the precise calculation of derivatives. In
many cases an analytical calculation is not feasible and one resorts to
evaluating derivatives numerically. These are error-prone, especially for
higher-order derivatives. A technique based on algorithmic differentiation is
presented which allows for a precise calculation of higher-order derivatives.
The method can be widely applied even for the case of only numerically
solvable, implicit dependencies which totally hamper a semi-analytical
calculation of the derivatives. As a demonstration the method is applied to a
quantum field theoretical physical model. The results are compared with
standard numerical derivative methods.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Comput. Phys. Commu
On the QCD phase structure from effective models
Some recent theoretical developments of the QCD phase diagram are summarized.
Chiral symmetry restoration and the confinement/deconfinement transition at
nonzero temperature and quark densities are analyzed in the framework of an
effective linear sigma model with three light quark flavors. The sensitivity of
the chiral transition as well as the existence of a critical end point in the
phase diagram on the value of the sigma mass is explored. The influence of the
axial anomaly on the chiral critical surface is addressed. Finally, the
modifications by the inclusion of the Polyakov loop on the phase structure are
investigated.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, talk given by BJS at the 30th International

EXPLORING THE RELATION BETWEEN FIRM OWNERSHIP AND IT CAPABILITY
As IT spending continuously increased throughout the last years, it nowadays accounts for a significant amount of total corporate spending. Simultaneously, academic research validated the strategic importance and performance benefits derived from a superior IT capability the ability to successfully deploy organizational IT skills and resources. Furthermore, shareholders pursuing long-term oriented goals are interested in consistent investments to develop organizational capabilities, such as IT capability. Consequentially, the question arises how a firms ownership structure is related to its IT capability. This research question is addressed by analyzing secondary data on publicly listed U.S. companies of the last ten years. The results provide support for the hypothesized relation throughout the investigated period and withstand several control and robustness tests. This study contributes to the ongoing research on IT capability by showing that certain types of shareholders promote the development and deployment of IT capability which in turn influences strategic topics. Findings further confirm that decisions on IT investments characterized by long-term benefits must be backed by owners with a corresponding long-term investment horizon
IT Capability and Firm Performance: Findings from Periods of Economic Downturn
Information technology is crucial in many industries and is seen as a decisive factor of a firm’s performance and financial success. Based on the dynamic capabilities view, this paper aims at extending existing research on organizational IT capability and performance. In particular, this work examines if firms exhibiting superior IT capability outperform their competitors, especially during two phases of economic downturn: the burst of the dotcom-bubble in 2000 and the recent financial crisis in 2008. Applying secondary statistics on different performance measures and proxies of IT capability among publicly traded US companies, we found that firms characterized by superior IT capability outperformed their competitors during both crises in all but one performance indicator. This paper contributes to research by investigating two crisis periods and using up-to-date data to reconcile prior research
The Role of Information Technology Business Alignment in Value Creation: A Multiple Case Study among German Banks
A key question in Information Systems research is how information technology creates business value. In this paper, our aim is to help reveal the role of alignment between IT and business resources in business value creation. In particular, we propose that the contribution of IT to business process performance should be investigated in the context of actual IT usage, with IT business alignment as a moderating variable. Also, IT flexibility should be explicitly considered. Using five case studies from the German financial services industry based on a causal model of IT business value creation reveals that the process of IT business value creation indeed strongly depends on the alignment between business and IT. But it also turns out that actual presence of business competencies is crucial and that even superior IT cannot compensate for business competency deficiencies
