A study of interface support mechanisms for interactive information retrieval
Advances in search technology have meant that search systems can now offer assistance to users beyond simply retrieving a set of documents. For example, search systems are now capable of inferring user interests by observing their interaction, offering suggestions about what terms could be used in a query, or reorganizing search results to make exploration of retrieved material more effective. When providing new search functionality, system designers must decide how the new functionality should be offered to users. One major choice is between (a) offering automatic features that require little human input, but give little human control; or (b) interactive features which allow human control over how the feature is used, but often give little guidance over how the feature should be best used. This article presents a study in which we empirically investigate the issue of control by presenting an experiment in which participants were asked to interact with three experimental systems that vary the degree of control they had in creating queries, indicating which results are relevant in making search decisions. We use our findings to discuss why and how the control users want over search decisions can vary depending on the nature of the decisions and the impact of those decisions on the user's search
The Putin phenomenon
The Putin presidency in Russia became increasingly popular as it progressed and a leadership cult developed around the president himself. Not only was there general satisfaction with the leadership as a whole, there was also evidence that it was regarded as increasingly successful in all fields of policy, particularly in international affairs; and focus group discussions as well as surveys suggested the newly elected president, Dmitri Medvedev, would be expected to continue those policies. A closer examination of the survey evidence suggests that the Putin leadership in fact had relatively weak roots in the wider society, and drew widely but superficially on public support. More than anything else it was the strong economic performance of these years that generated support for the Putin presidency, and this suggested that any future leader would depend for his position on maintaining that economic performance in what were now more difficult circumstances
Russia and its neighbours: East or West?
As âEuropeâ becomes more diverse, the countries that were formerly part of the USSR face new choices. One of the most fundamental is whether they identify with the economic and military institutions of the âWestâ, such as NATO and the European Union, or with the Commonwealth of Independent States and other forms of association with the Slavic âEastâ. We examine these choices in each of three societiesâBelarus, Russia and Ukraineâon the basis of national surveys conducted between 2000 and 2008. Across the three, âEasternâ orientations have more popular support than âWesternâ ones, but Ukrainian opinion is more sharply polarised than opinion in the other two countries. There is more support for a âSlavic choiceâ in Russia than in either of the other two countries, and particularly large numbers there who regret the demise of the USSR; but opinion on such matters is moderate rather than fundamentalist and does not necessarily exclude a closer relationship with the European Union and NATO

A new method to identify the optimal temperature of latent-heat thermal-energy storage systems for power generation from waste heat
The integration of thermal-energy storage (TES) within waste-heat recovery power generation systems has the potential to improve energy-efficiency in many industrial processes with variable and/or intermittent waste-heat streams. The first objective of this paper is to present a novel model of these systems that can be used at an early design stage to provide fast and accurate estimates of performance. More specifically, the method can identify the optimal temperature of latent-heat TES systems for waste-heat recovery applications based only on the known heat-source and heat-sink conditions (i.e., temperature, mass-flow rate and specificheat capacity), and can assess both single-stage and cascaded systems. The model has been validated against optimal organic Rankine cycle systems identified from a thermodynamic cycle optimisation. The second objective is to identify the characteristics of optimal systems for different heat-source profiles. The results indicate that, for a given application, there exists an optimal temperature for the latent-heat TES system that depends primarily on the relative size of the heat sink. Moreover, it is found that, for a heat engine operating with TES, the power rating ranges between 25% and 60% of the corresponding power rating for an optimal heat engine, operating without TES, that adapts instantaneously to heat-source fluctuations, whilst the total energy production is reduced by between 45% and 85% respectively. Finally, a small deviation is observed between the results obtained for the different heat sources considered, which suggests that these findings can be extrapolated to other heat sources not considered within this study
Theoretical implications of a pre-erythrocytic Plasmodium vivax vaccine for preventing relapses
Preventing malaria infection through vaccination requires preventing every sporozoite inoculated by mosquito bite: a major challenge for Plasmodium falciparum. Plasmodium vivax sporozoites consist of tachysporozoites causing primary infection and bradysporozoites leading to relapses.We hypothesise that a candidate P. vivax vaccine with low efficacy against primary infection may substantially reduce transmission by preventing relapses
Web document summarisation: a task-oriented evaluation
We present a query-biased summarisation interface for Web searching. The summarisation system has been specifically developed to act as a component in existing Web search interfaces. The summaries allow the user to more effectively assess the content of Web pages. We also present an experimental investigation of this approach. Our experimental results shows the system appears to be more useful and effective in helping users gauge document relevance than the traditional ranked titles/abstracts approach
Media effects and Russian elections, 1999-2000
The Russian parliamentary and presidential elections of December 1999 and March 2000 appeared to have been won in large part through the partisan use of (particularly state) television. According to the evidence of a spring 2001 national survey, television was the main source of political information for the supporters of all parties and candidates. However, state television (which had been most supportive of the Kremlin) was much more likely to be favoured by the supporters of the pro-regime Unity party; while commercial television (which had provided a more even-handed coverage of the elections) was more popular and respected among the supporters of anti-Kremlin parties and candidates and less popular among supporters of Vladimir Putin. Regression analysis that takes account of reciprocal causation between media source and vote choice indicates that these were not spurious associations. The findings suggest that the state itself may exercise a disproportionate influence upon the electoral process in newly established systems in which social structures and political allegiances remain fluid
A granular approach to web search result presentation
In this paper we propose and evaluate interfaces for presenting the results of web searches. Sentences, taken from the top retrieved documents, are used as fine-grained representations of document content and, when combined in a ranked list, to provide a query-specific overview of the set of retrieved documents. Current search engine interfaces assume users examine such results document-by-document. In contrast our approach groups, ranks and presents the contents of the top ranked document set. We evaluate our hypotheses that the use of such an approach can lead to more effective web searching and to increased user satisfaction. Our evaluation, with real users and different types of information seeking scenario, showed, with statistical significance, that these hypotheses hold
