Comment on "Finite size scaling in Neural Networks"
We use a binary search tree and the simplex algorithm to measure the fraction
of patterns that can be stored by an Ising perceptron. The algorithm is much
faster than exhaustive search and allows us to obtain accurate statistics up to
a system size of N=42. The results show that the finite size scaling ansatz
Nadler and Fink suggest in [1] cannot be applied to estimate accurately the
storage capacity from small systems.

On the Helix-coil Transition in Alanine-based Polypeptides in Gas Phase
Using multicanonical simulations, the authors study the effect of charged end
groups on helix formation in alanine based polypeptides. They confirm earlier
reports that neutral polyalanine exhibits a pronounced helix-coil transition in
gas phase simulations. Introducing a charged Lys+ at the C terminal stabilizes
the helix and leads to a higher transition temperature. On the other hand,
adding the Lys+ at the N terminal inhibits helix formation. Instead, a more
globular structure was found. These results are in agreement with recent
experiments on alanine based polypeptides in gas phase. They indicate that
present force fields describe accurately the intramolecular interactions in
proteins
2014 Fed Challenge Script: Current State of the Economy
Good afternoon everyone and thank you for having us here today. Though the recession began in 2007 and officially ended in 2009, recovery has been painfully slow. GDP growth has been insufficient to close the output gap, there continues to be slack in the labor market and inflation has stabilized below the Federal Reserve percent target. We are not meeting our dual mandate of full employment and stable prices even 6 years after the end of the recession. Despite some signs of strengthening in the economy during the past year, we do not believe that economy is on a self-sustaining path of recovery. Furthermore, the monetary policy actions taken by the Fed thus far to pull us out of the Great Recession have been insufficient. We propose a substantial strengthening of the our forward guidance; specifically, a commitment not to raise the federal funds rate until nominal GDP has returned to a path that we consider consistent with the dual mandate. The V3, V4 and V6 bands of formaldehyde: A spectral catalog from 900 cm(-1) to 1580 cm(-1)
The results of a complete high resolution study of the three vibration-rotation bands v sub 3, v sub 4, and V sub 6 using both TDLs and FT-IR spectroscopy are presented. The reults are given in terms of a table of over 8000 predicted transition frequencies and strengths. A plot of the predicted and calculated spectra is shown. Over 3000 transitions were assigned and used in the simultaneous analysis of the three bands. The simultaneous fit permitted a rigorous study of Coriolis and other type iterations among bands yielding improved molecular constants. Line intensities of 28 transitions measured by a TDL and 20 transitions from FTS data were used, along with the eigenvectors from the frequency fitting, in a least squares analysis to evaluate the band strengths
Side chain and backbone ordering in a polypeptide
We report results from multicanonical simulations of polyglutamic acid chains
of length of ten residues. For this simple polypeptide we observe a decoupling
of backbone and side-chain ordering in the folding process. While the details
of the two transitions vary between the peptide in gas phase and in an implicit
solvent, our results indicate that, independent of the specific surroundings,
upon continuously lowering the temperature side-chain ordering occurs only
after the backbone topology is completely formed
Connecting up strategy: are senior strategy directors a missing link?
With companies being exhorted to become more strategically agile and internally connected, this article examines the role of the Senior Strategy Director, the executive tasked specifically with internal strategy. In particular, it explores what they do, what specific capabilities they deploy to enable effective contribution to the company, and in what ways they facilitate the connectedness of strategy. An analysis of multiple interviews over time with Senior Strategy Directors of large companies shows the vital and challenging role these executives play in both shaping, connecting up, and executing strategy. This article identifies the particular capabilities necessary for Senior Strategy Directors to perform their role and shows how it all depends upon their skilful deployment. These findings have significant implications for understanding unfolding micro-processes of strategy in large organizations, for assumptions about the skills and capabilities necessary to be an effective Senior Strategy Director, and for business schools in terms of the content and style of strategy courses they provide
Ions in Fluctuating Channels: Transistors Alive
Ion channels are proteins with a hole down the middle embedded in cell
membranes. Membranes form insulating structures and the channels through them
allow and control the movement of charged particles, spherical ions, mostly
Na+, K+, Ca++, and Cl-. Membranes contain hundreds or thousands of types of
channels, fluctuating between open conducting, and closed insulating states.
Channels control an enormous range of biological function by opening and
closing in response to specific stimuli using mechanisms that are not yet
understood in physical language. Open channels conduct current of charged
particles following laws of Brownian movement of charged spheres rather like
the laws of electrodiffusion of quasi-particles in semiconductors. Open
channels select between similar ions using a combination of electrostatic and
'crowded charge' (Lennard-Jones) forces. The specific location of atoms and the
exact atomic structure of the channel protein seems much less important than
certain properties of the structure, namely the volume accessible to ions and
the effective density of fixed and polarization charge. There is no sign of
other chemical effects like delocalization of electron orbitals between ions
and the channel protein. Channels play a role in biology as important as
transistors in computers, and they use rather similar physics to perform part
of that role. Understanding their fluctuations awaits physical insight into the
source of the variance and mathematical analysis of the coupling of the
fluctuations to the other components and forces of the system.Comment: Revised version of earlier submission, as invited, refereed, and

Variable-free exploration of stochastic models: a gene regulatory network example
Finding coarse-grained, low-dimensional descriptions is an important task in
the analysis of complex, stochastic models of gene regulatory networks. This
task involves (a) identifying observables that best describe the state of these
complex systems and (b) characterizing the dynamics of the observables. In a
previous paper [13], we assumed that good observables were known a priori, and
presented an equation-free approach to approximate coarse-grained quantities
(i.e, effective drift and diffusion coefficients) that characterize the
long-time behavior of the observables. Here we use diffusion maps [9] to
extract appropriate observables ("reduction coordinates") in an automated
fashion; these involve the leading eigenvectors of a weighted Laplacian on a
graph constructed from network simulation data. We present lifting and
restriction procedures for translating between physical variables and these
data-based observables. These procedures allow us to perform equation-free
coarse-grained, computations characterizing the long-term dynamics through the
design and processing of short bursts of stochastic simulation initialized at
appropriate values of the data-based observables.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figure
