    Effect of Urinary Macromolecules and Chondroitin Sulphate on Calcium Oxalate Crystallization in Urine

    After filtration and ultrafiltration (10 kD) of 24 hour urine specimens from 12 healthy male subjects, calcium oxalate crystallization was induced in the filtered (FILTD) and ultrafiltered (UF) fractions by administration of a sodium oxalate load. In addition crystallization was also induced in UF fractions to which physiological quantities of chondroitin sulphate (CHON) had been added (UF + CHON). The rate of calcium oxalate crystallization was determined by measuring the rate at which turbidity increased. Crystal numbers and sizes were measured with a Malvern particle size analyzer and by scanning electron microscopy. Crystallization rates, crystal numbers and crystal sizes were generally lower in UF fractions than in FIL TD fractions suggesting that urinary macromolecules are promoters of calcium oxalate crystallization. No increase in crystallization rate, crystal numbers or sizes occurred when chondroitin sulphate was added to UF fractions, indicating that the promoter activity of urinary macromolecules is not due to this particular glycosaminoglycan. On the contrary, crystallization rates were qualitatively lower in UF + CHON fractions than in UF fractions alone, suggesting a possible inhibitory role for chondroitin sulphate in real urine. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that while aggregates were present in UF and FILTD fractions, they were absent in UF + CHON fractions. This observation indicates that chondroitin sulphate might be an inhibitor of calcium oxalate crystal aggregation in real urine

    The nature of the general facility location problem has been discussed previously by McCarthy, Rodgers & Higham and a method of solution outlined. The present paper aims to extend the solution technique so that a number of low cost solutions with differing spatial characteristics are generated. This permits entrepreneurs or policy makers to choose among the alternatives. The facility location problem can be stated as the determination of the number, size and location of a certain type of facility in order to satisfy the demand for the services provided; the "goodness" of any solution, relative to others, is measured in terms of some effectiveness criterion. For example one problem reported extensively in the agricultural economics literature is the determination of the number, size and location of agricultural commodity processing plants (freezing works, wool selling centres, grain storage depots), so that the sum of total transport (assembly plus distribution) costs and total processing costs are minimised. Another general type of problem receiving attention in applied operations research relates to the number, size and location of public emergency services (for example ambulance and hospital services).     The parasitic worm-derived immunomodulator, ES-62 and its drug-like small molecule analogues exhibit therapeutic potential in a model of chronic asthma

    Chronic asthma is associated with persistent lung inflammation and long-term remodelling of the airways that have proved refractory to conventional treatments such as steroids, despite their efficacy in controlling acute airway contraction and bronchial inflammation. As its recent dramatic increase in industrialised countries has not been mirrored in developing regions, it has been suggested that helminth infection may protect humans against developing asthma. Consistent with this, ES-62, an immunomodulator secreted by the parasitic worm Acanthocheilonema viteae, can prevent pathology associated with chronic asthma (cellular infiltration of the lungs, particularly neutrophils and mast cells, mucus hyper-production and airway thickening) in an experimental mouse model. Importantly, ES-62 can act even after airway remodelling has been established, arresting pathogenesis and ameliorating the inflammatory flares resulting from repeated exposure to allergen that are a debilitating feature of severe chronic asthma. Moreover, two chemical analogues of ES-62, 11a and 12b mimic its therapeutic actions in restoring levels of regulatory B cells and suppressing neutrophil and mast cell responses. These studies therefore provide a platform for developing ES-62-based drugs, with compounds 11a and 12b representing the first step in the development of a novel class of drugs to combat the hitherto intractable disorder of chronic asthma

    We report the discovery of a small cluster of massive stars embedded in a NIR nebula in the direction of the IRAS15411-5352 point source, which is related to the alleged planetary nebula W16-185. The majority of the stars present large NIR excess characteristic of young stellar objects and have bright counterparts in the Spitzer IRAC images; the most luminous star (IRS1) is the NIR counterpart of the IRAS source. We found very strong unresolved Brgamma emission at the IRS1 position and more diluted and extended emission across the continuum nebula. From the sizes and electron volume densities we concluded that they represent ultra-compact and compact HII regions, respectively. Comparing the Brgamma emission with the 7 mm free-free emission, we estimated that the visual extinction ranges between 14 and 20 mag. We found that only one star (IRS1) can provide the number of UV photons necessary to ionize the nebula.Comment: 30 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables V3: minor grammatical changes.     Interactions of satellite-speed helium atoms with satellite-surfaces. 1: Spatial distributions of reflected helium atoms

    Interactions of satellite-speed helium atoms with practical satellite surfaces were investigated experimentally, and spatial distributions of satellite-speed helium beams scattered from four different engineering surfaces were measured. The 7000 m/sec helium beams were produced using an arc-heated supersonic molecular beam source. The test surfaces included cleaned 6061-T6 aluminum plate, anodized aluminum foil, white paint, and quartz surfaces. Both in-plane (in the plane containing the incident beam and the surface normal) and out-of-plane spatial distributions of reflected helium atoms were measured for six different incidence angles (0, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 deg from the surface normal). It was found that a large fraction of the incident helium atoms were scattered back in the vicinity of the incoming beam, particularly in the case of glancing incidence angles. This unexpected scattering feature results perhaps from the gross roughness of these test surfaces. This prominent backscattering could yield drag coefficients which are higher than for surfaces with either forward-lobed or diffusive (cosine) scattering patterns

    We report improved transformation equations between the u′g′r′i′z′u'g'r'i'z' and UBVRCICUBVR_CI_C photometric systems. Although the details of the transformations depend on luminosity class, we find a typical rms scatter on the order of 0.001 magnitude if the sample is limited to main sequence stars. Furthermore, we find an accurate transformation requires complex, multi-color dependencies for the bluer bandpasses.     The young massive stellar cluster associated to RCW121

    We report NIR broad and narrow band photometric observations in the direction of the IRAS17149-3916 source that reveal the presence of a young cluster of massive stars embedded in an HII region coincident with RCW121. These observations, together with published radio data, MSX and Spitzer images were used to determine some of the physical parameters of the region. We found 96 cluster member candidates in an area of about 1.5 x 2.0 square arcmin, 30% of them showing excess emission in the NIR. IRS 1, the strongest source in the cluster with an estimated spectral type of O5V-O6V ZAMS based on the color-magnitude diagram, is probably the main ionizing source of the HII region detected at radio wavelengths. Using the integrated Brgamma and the 5 GHz flux densities, we derived a mean visual extinction AV=5.49 magnitudes. From the observed size of the Brgamma extended emission, we calculated the emission measure E and the electron density ne, characteristic of compact HII regions.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication on AJ (February/2006

    Quantitative PCR assays for detection of five Alaskan fish species: Lota lota, Salvelinus alpinus, Salvelinus malma, Thymallus arcticus, and Cottus cognatus from environmental DNA

    The North Slope of Alaska contains arctic fish populations that are important for subsistence of local human populations, and under threat from natural resource extraction and climate change. We designed and evaluated four quantitative PCR assays for detection of environmental DNA from five Alaskan fish species present on the North Slope of Alaska: burbot (Lota lota), arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma), arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus), and slimy sculpin (Cottus cognatus). All assays were designed and tested for species specificity and sensitivity, and all assays detected target species from filtered water samples collected from the field. These assays will enable efficient and economical detection of the above species from lakes and rivers. This in turn will provide managers with improved knowledge of current distributions and future range shifts associated with climate and development threats, enabling more timely management
