    The dual-frequency scatterometer reexamined

    Get PDF
The utility of dual frequency scatterometers in measuring ocean wave directional spectra can be increased by adding third frequency to the system. The background which effectively limits signal detectability in dual frequency operation can be made a part of the signal through the addition of this third frequency. Signal detectability is limited only by system thermal noise and space based operation becomes more feasible

The Cotton Wizard: A Software Implementation of a Cotton Variety Selection Model

    Get PDF
The Cotton Wizard is an implementation of a cotton variety selection model intended to assist decision-makers (including producers, farm managers, extension specialists, and breeders) in variety selection. The program uses objective cotton performance test data available from state agricultural experiment stations. The decision criteria for variety selection are based on expected economic return (mean net revenue) of a variety and the variability of returns (coefficient of variation). Total revenue is calculated from lint price and seed price, and lint and seed yields. Lint and seed prices are determined by their respective quality characteristics. Adjustments are made for costs that may differ among varieties, such as planting seed cost (seed and technology costs), harvest and ginning costs, and herbicide and insecticide costs in comparisons of transgenic and conventional varieties. Users are provided with information on varieties—such as mean net revenue (total revenue less costs), variability in net revenue, and agronomic characteristics—to aid in the decision process. The Cotton Wizard is available as a Web application.Crop Production/Industries, Farm Management, Production Economics,

Indian television: the state, privatisation and the struggle for media autonomy

    Get PDF
India represents an example of immense complexity and diversity in cultural production and communications. Broadcasting, film, newspaper, magazine, and musical production have been characterised by regional and linguistic diversity, with non-Hindi and non-English media in the private sphere especially showing signs of remarkable growth over the last decade or more (Jeffrey 1993). While the basic role of the state and state regulatory framework was established under British colonial rule, it has undergone substantial modification in the post-colonial period. In concert with many countries in the \u27third world\u27, private rather than state cultural and media production has become increasingly dominant to the extent that it challenges - strong central interventionist powers notwithstanding, both state production and regulatory frameworks

    Tri-county pilot study

    Get PDF
The author has identified the following significant results. An area inventory was performed for three southeast Texas counties (Montgomery, Walker, and San Jacinto) totaling 0.65 million hectares. The inventory was performed using a two level hierarchy. Level 1 was divided into forestland, rangeland, and other land. Forestland was separated into Level 2 categories: pine, hardwood, and mixed; rangeland was not separated further. Results consisted of area statistics for each county and for the entire study site for pine, hardwood, mixed, rangeland, and other land. Color coded county classification maps were produced for the May data set, and procedures were developed and tested

Rocket spectrometer for investigation of the far ultraviolet solar spectrum

    Get PDF
A rocket-borne Ebert spectrometer and telescope were used for analysis of the solar spectrum. The instrument was arranged in the high resolution line scanning mode. Selected emission lines between 1170 and 1640 A were scanned, and a complete wavelength scan was made from 1170 A to 1850 A. Accurate measurements were made of the line profiles of the He II lines at 1640 A, C IV lines at 1550 A, Si IV lines at 1400 A, C II lines at 1335 A, the N V lines at 1240 A, and the C III lines at 1175 A. Accurate intensity measurements of the quiet sun spectrum for wavelengths between 1174 A and 3220 A were obtained. Spectral resolution was better than 0.03 A over most of the range and spatial resolution was relatively low so that the observations are averaged over the chromospheric network. Plots of absolute intensity versus wave length were prepared for the full wavelength range of the observations
