Associated regions for multiple birth in Brown Swiss and Original Braunvieh cattle on chromosomes 15 and 11.
Twin and multiple births have negative effects on the performance and health of cows and calves. To decipher the genetic architecture of this trait in the two Swiss Brown Swiss cattle populations, we performed various association analyses based on de-regressed breeding values. Genome-wide association analyses were executed using ~600 K imputed SNPs for the maternal multiple birth trait in ~3500 Original Braunvieh and ~7800 Brown Swiss animals. Significantly associated QTL were observed on different chromosomes for both breeds. We have identified on chromosome 11 a QTL that explains ~6% of the total genetic variance of the maternal multiple birth trait in Original Braunvieh. For the Brown Swiss breed, we have discovered a QTL on chromosome 15 that accounts for ~4% of the total genetic variance. For Original Braunvieh, subsequent haplotype analysis revealed a 90-kb window on chromosome 11 at 88 Mb, where a likely regulatory region is located close to the ID2 gene. In Brown Swiss, a 130-kb window at 75 Mb on chromosome 15 was identified. Analysis of whole-genome sequence data using linkage-disequilibrium estimation revealed possible causal variants for the identified QTL. A presumably regulatory variant in the non-coding 5' region of the ID2 gene was strongly associated with the haplotype for Original Braunvieh. In Brown Swiss, an intron variant in PRDM11, one 3' UTR variant in SYT13 and three intergenic variants 5' upstream of SYT13 were identified as candidate variants for the trait multiple birth maternal. In this study, we report for the first time QTL for the trait of multiple births in Original Braunvieh and Brown Swiss cattle. Moreover, our findings are another step towards a better understanding of the complex genetic architecture of this polygenic trait
Magnetic fields of opposite polarity in sunspot penumbrae
Context. A significant part of the penumbral magnetic field returns below the
surface in the very deep photosphere. For lines in the visible, a large portion
of this return field can only be detected indirectly by studying its imprints
on strongly asymmetric and three-lobed Stokes V profiles. Infrared lines probe
a narrow layer in the very deep photosphere, providing the possibility of
directly measuring the orientation of magnetic fields close to the solar
surface.
Aims. We study the topology of the penumbral magnetic field in the lower
photosphere, focusing on regions where it returns below the surface.
Methods. We analyzed 71 spectropolarimetric datasets from Hinode and from the
GREGOR infrared spectrograph. We inferred the quality and polarimetric accuracy
of the infrared data after applying several reduction steps. Techniques of
spectral inversion and forward synthesis were used to test the detection
algorithm. We compared the morphology and the fractional penumbral area covered
by reversed-polarity and three-lobed Stokes V profiles for sunspots at disk
center. We determined the amount of reversed-polarity and three-lobed Stokes V
profiles in visible and infrared data of sunspots at various heliocentric
angles. From the results, we computed center-to-limb variation curves, which
were interpreted in the context of existing penumbral models.
Results. Observations in visible and near-infrared spectral lines yield a
significant difference in the penumbral area covered by magnetic fields of
opposite polarity. In the infrared, the number of reversed-polarity Stokes V
profiles is smaller by a factor of two than in the visible. For three-lobed
Stokes V profiles the numbers differ by up to an order of magnitude.Comment: 11 pages 10 figures plus appendix (2 pages 3 figures). Accepted as

Phase of bi-particle localized states for the Cooper problem in two-dimensional disordered systems
The Cooper problem is studied numerically for the Anderson model with
disorder in two-dimensions. It is shown that the attractive Hubbard interaction
creates a phase of bi-particle localized states in the regime where
non-interacting states are delocalized. This phase cannot be obtained in the
mean-field approximation and the pair coupling energy is strongly enhanced in
this regime. The effects of magnetic field are studied and it is shown that
under certain conditions they lead to delocalization.Comment: revtex, 7 pages, 8 figure
A taste of the deep-sea: The roles of gustatory and tactile searching behaviour in the grenadier fish Coryphaenoides armatus
The deep-sea grenadier fishes (Coryphaenoides spp.) are among the dominant predators and scavengers in the ocean basins that cover much of Earth's surface. Baited camera experiments were used to study the behaviour of these fishes. Despite the apparent advantages of rapidly consuming food, grenadiers attracted to bait spend a large proportion of their time in prolonged periods of non-feeding activity. Video analysis revealed that fish often adopted a head-down swimming attitude (mean of 21.3 degrees between the fish and seafloor), with swimming velocity negatively related to attitude. The fish also swam around and along vertical and horizontal structures of the lander with their head immediately adjacent to the structure. We initially hypothesised that this behaviour was associated with the use of the short chin barbel in foraging. Barbel histology showed numerous taste buds in the skin, and a barbel nerve with about 20,000 axons in adult fish. A tracing experiment in one undamaged animal revealed the termination fields of the barbel neurons in the trigeminal and rhombencephalic regions, indicating both a mechanoreceptory and a gustatory role for the barbel. Our conclusion was that olfactory foraging becomes ineffective at close ranges and is followed by a search phase using tactile and gustatory sensing by the barbel. The development of this sensory method probably co-evolved alongside behavioural changes in swimming mechanics to allow postural stability at low swimming speeds
Quasiparticle Hall Transport of d-wave Superconductors in Vortex State
We present a theory of quasiparticle Hall transport in strongly type-II
superconductors within their vortex state. We establish the existence of
integer quantum spin Hall effect in clean unconventional
superconductors in the vortex state from a general analysis of the
Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. The spin Hall conductivity is
shown to be quantized in units of . This result does not
rest on linearization of the BdG equations around Dirac nodes and therefore
includes inter-nodal physics in its entirety. In addition, this result holds
for a generic inversion-symmetric lattice of vortices as long as the magnetic
field satisfies . We then derive the
Wiedemann-Franz law for the spin and thermal Hall conductivity in the vortex
state. In the limit of , the thermal Hall conductivity satisfies
. The
transitions between different quantized values of as well as
relation to conventional superconductors are discussed.Comment: 18 pages REVTex, 3 figures, references adde
Pralidoxime in Acute Organophosphorus Insecticide Poisoning-A Randomised Controlled Trial
Background: Poisoning with organophosphorus (OP) insecticides is a major global public health problem, causing an estimated 200,000 deaths each year. Although the World Health Organization recommends use of pralidoxime, this antidote's effectiveness remains unclear. We aimed to determine whether the addition of pralidoxime chloride to atropine and supportive care offers benefit. Methods and Findings: We performed a double-blind randomised placebo-controlled trial of pralidoxime chloride (2 g loading dose over 20 min, followed by a constant infusion of 0.5 g/h for up to 7 d) versus saline in patients with organophosphorus insecticide self-poisoning. Mortality was the primary outcome; secondary outcomes included intubation, duration of intubation, and time to death. We measured baseline markers of exposure and pharmacodynamic markers of response to aid interpretation of clinical outcomes. Two hundred thirty-five patients were randomised to receive pralidoxime (121) or saline placebo (114). Pralidoxime produced substantial and moderate red cell acetylcholinesterase reactivation in patients poisoned by diethyl and dimethyl compounds, respectively. Mortality was nonsignificantly higher in patients receiving pralidoxime: 30/121 (24.8%) receiving pralidoxime died, compared with 18/114 (15.8%) receiving placebo (adjusted hazard ratio HR] 1.69, 95% confidence interval CI] 0.88-3.26, p = 0.12). Incorporating the baseline amount of acetylcholinesterase already aged and plasma OP concentration into the analysis increased the HR for patients receiving pralidoxime compared to placebo, further decreasing the likelihood that pralidoxime is beneficial. The need for intubation was similar in both groups (pralidoxime 26/121 21.5%], placebo 24/114 21.1%], adjusted HR 1.27 95% CI 0.71-2.29]). To reduce confounding due to ingestion of different insecticides, we further analysed patients with confirmed chlorpyrifos or dimethoate poisoning alone, finding no evidence of benefit. Conclusions: Despite clear reactivation of red cell acetylcholinesterase in diethyl organophosphorus pesticide poisoned patients, we found no evidence that this regimen improves survival or reduces need for intubation in patients with organophosphorus insecticide poisoning. The reason for this failure to benefit patients was not apparent. Further studies of different dose regimens or different oximes are required
Determination of Pericardial Adipose Tissue Increases the Prognostic Accuracy of Coronary Artery Calcification for Future Cardiovascular Events
Objectives: Pericardial adipose tissue (PAT) is associated with coronary artery plaque accumulation and the incidence of coronary heart disease. We evaluated the possible incremental prognostic value of PAT for future cardiovascular events. Methods: 145 patients (94 males, age 60 10 years) with stable coronary artery disease underwent coronary artery calcification (CAC) scanning in a multislice CT scanner, and the volume of pericardial fat was measured. Mean observation time was 5.4 years. Results: 34 patients experienced a severe cardiac event. They had a significantly higher CAC score (1,708 +/- 2,269 vs. 538 +/- 1,150, p 400, 3.5 (1.9-5.4; p = 0.007) for scores > 800 and 5.9 (3.7-7.8; p = 0.005) for scores > 1,600. When additionally a PAT volume > 200 cm(3) was determined, there was a significant increase in the event rate and relative risk. We calculated a relative risk of 2.9 (1.9-4.2; p = 0.01) for scores > 400, 4.0 (2.1-5.0; p = 0.006) for scores > 800 and 7.1 (4.1-10.2; p = 0.005) for scores > 1,600. Conclusions:The additional determination of PAT increases the predictive power of CAC for future cardiovascular events. PAT might therefore be used as a further parameter for risk stratification. Search for modulations of the solar Be-7 flux in the next-generation neutrino observatory LENA
A next-generation liquid-scintillator detector will be able to perform
high-statistics measurements of the solar neutrino flux. In LENA, solar Be-7
neutrinos are expected to cause 1.7x10^4 electron recoil events per day in a
fiducial volume of 35 kilotons. Based on this signal, a search for periodic
modulations on sub-percent level can be conducted, surpassing the sensitivity
of current detectors by at least a factor of 20. The range of accessible
periods reaches from several minutes, corresponding to modulations induced by
helioseismic g-modes, to tens of years, allowing to study long-term changes in
solar fusion rates.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure
