Control Systems for Logistics Performance
This text is concerned with identifying and outlining the various aspects of logistics control and performance measurement process. The objective is to identify, based on available literature, methods and techniques which can be used to measure the performance of logistics.
Logistics management is essentially a task of balancing between minimizing cost and ensuring availability objectives. Availability can be seen as the output of logistics system. On the input side, management is concerned with minimization of costs caused by holding inventories, warehousing, transportation, production and administration of logistics activities.
Logistics control is normally directed toward two subjects: the control of logistics output or service level and the input of logistics system. Key objects of logistics control are: service level, inventory turnover, warehousing costs, transportation costs and administrative costs.
The logistics control systems involves setting goals and standards for performance, measuring performance, and taking corrective actions. Various methods such as productivity ratios, flexible budgets, standards, control charts, and audits, can be used to measure the performance of logistics activities.
The methods used to measure logistics activities usually provide a comparison to the past, not to the future. The nature of the problem in logistics is change. The focus must be to respond to change by projecting possible future system states. Control systems should assume possible future conditions in order to plan for response and to guide future decisions
Case study of ozone anomalies over northern Russia in the 2015/2016 winter: measurements and numerical modelling
Episodes of extremely low ozone columns were observed over the territory of
Russia in the Arctic winter of 2015/2016 and the beginning of spring 2016. We
compare total ozone columns (TOCs) from different remote sensing techniques
(satellite and ground-based observations) with results of numerical modelling
over the territory of the Urals and Siberia for this period. We demonstrate
that the provided monitoring systems (including the new Russian Infrared
Fourier Spectrometer IKFS-2) and modern three-dimensional atmospheric models
can capture the observed TOC anomalies. However, the results of observations
and modelling show differences of up to 20 %–30 % in TOC
measurements. Analysis of the role of chemical and dynamical processes
demonstrates that the observed short-term TOC variability is not a result of
local photochemical loss initiated by heterogeneous halogen activation on
particles of polar stratospheric clouds that formed under low temperatures in
the mid-winter.</p

Serotype 6D of Streptococcus pneumoniae has been reported in Asia and the Fijian islands among nasopharyngeal carriage isolates. Genome-wide association study of nocturnal blood pressure dipping in hypertensive patients
Abstract
Background
Reduced nocturnal fall (non-dipping) of blood pressure (BP) is a predictor of cardiovascular target organ damage. No genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on BP dipping have been previously reported.
Methods
To study genetic variation affecting BP dipping, we conducted a GWAS in Genetics of Drug Responsiveness in Essential Hypertension (GENRES) cohort (n = 204) using the mean night-to-day BP ratio from up to four ambulatory BP recordings conducted on placebo. Associations with P < 1 × 10− 5 were further tested in two independent cohorts: Haemodynamics in Primary and Secondary Hypertension (DYNAMIC) (n = 183) and Dietary, Lifestyle and Genetic determinants of Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome (DILGOM) (n = 180). We also tested the genome-wide significant single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) for association with left ventricular hypertrophy in GENRES.
Results
In GENRES GWAS, rs4905794 near BCL11B achieved genome-wide significance (β = − 4.8%, P = 9.6 × 10− 9 for systolic and β = − 4.3%, P = 2.2 × 10− 6 for diastolic night-to-day BP ratio). Seven additional SNPs in five loci had P values < 1 × 10− 5. The association of rs4905794 did not significantly replicate, even though in DYNAMIC the effect was in the same direction (β = − 0.8%, P = 0.4 for systolic and β = − 1.6%, P = 0.13 for diastolic night-to-day BP ratio). In GENRES, the associations remained significant even during administration of four different antihypertensive drugs. In separate analysis in GENRES, rs4905794 was associated with echocardiographic left ventricular mass (β = − 7.6 g/m2, P = 0.02).
Conclusions
rs4905794 near BCL11B showed evidence for association with nocturnal BP dipping. It also associated with left ventricular mass in GENRES. Combined with earlier data, our results provide support to the idea that BCL11B could play a role in cardiovascular pathophysiology
The Transition to Upper Secondary Level After Basic Education for Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Finland
This chapter provides an exploration of the preparation of pupils with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) for transition to upper secondary level after Finnish basic education. It also examines the importance of supports required during the transition phase. Two examples of pupils with ASD (Kalle and Maija) are utilized to illustrate how to plan and support pupils with ASD during their initial post-school transition. Transitions are defined, after which education opportunities after basic education for pupils with ASD in Finland are examined. This is followed by a brief illustration of the Finnish comprehensive school system to provide context with a focus on support arrangements and the preparation of support for transition. Then, the individual transition-planning documents are examined, after which the two cases of Kalle and Maija are introduced. This is followed by an illustration of the use of the documents in practice for the two pupils. The summary includes a discussion of implications for future directions.Peer reviewe
Poor 10-year survivorship of hip resurfacing arthroplasty: 5,098 replacements from the Finnish Arthroplasty Register
Background and purpose In a previous registry report, short-term implant survival of hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) in Finland was found to be comparable to that of total hip arthroplasty (THA). Since then, it has become evident that adverse reactions to metal debris (ARMDs) may also be associated with HRA, not only with large-diameter head metal-on-metal THA. The aim of the study was to assess medium- to long-term survivorship of HRA based on the Finnish Arthroplasty Register (FAR).Patients and methods 5,068 HRAs performed during the period 2001-2013 in Finland were included. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to calculate survival probabilities and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Cox multiple regression, with adjustment for age, sex, diagnosis, femoral head size, and hospital volume was used to analyze implant survival of HRA devices with revision for any reason as endpoint. The reference group consisted of 6,485 uncemented Vision/Bimetric and ABG II THAs performed in Finland over the same time period.Results The 8-year survival, with any revision as an endpoint, was 93% (CI: 92-94) for Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR), 86% (CI: 78-94) for Corin, 91% (CI: 89-94) for ReCap, 92% (CI: 89-96) for Durom, and was 72% (CI: 69-76) for the Articular Surface Replacement (ASR). The 10-year survival, with any revision as an endpoint, for reference THAs was 92% (CI: 91-92) and for all HRAs it was 86% (CI: 84-87%). Female HRA patients had about twice the revision risk of male patients. ASR had an inferior outcome: the revision risk was 4-fold higher than for BHR, the reference implant.Interpretation The 10-year implant survival of HRAs is 86% in Finland. According to new recommendations from NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence), an HRA/THA should have a revision rate of 5% or less at 10 years. None of the HRAs studied achieved this goal
