Performance of large area xenon ion thrusters for orbit transfer missions
Studies have indicated that xenon ion propulsion systems can enable the use of smaller Earth-launch vehicles for satellite placement which results in significant cost savings. These analyses have assumed the availability of advanced, high power ion thrusters operating at about 10 kW or higher. A program was initiated to explore the viability of operating 50 cm diameter ion thrusters at this power level. Operation with several discharge chamber and ion extraction grid set combinations has been demonstrated and data were obtained at power levels to 16 kW. Fifty cm diameter thrusters using state of the art 30 cm diameter grids or advanced technology 50 cm diameter grids allow discharge power and beam current densities commensurate with long life at power levels up to 10 kW. In addition, 50 cm diameter thrusters are shown to have the potential for growth in thrust and power levels beyond 10 KW

Ratio maps of iron ore deposits Atlantic City district, Wyoming
Preliminary results of a spectral rationing technique are shown for a region at the southern end of the Wind River Range, Wyoming. Digital ratio graymaps and analog ratio images have been produced for the test site, but ground truth is not yet available for thorough interpretation of these products. ERTS analog ratio images were found generally better than either ERTS single-channel images or high altitude aerial photos for the discrimination of vegetation from non-vegetation in the test site region. Some linear geological features smaller than the ERTS spatial resolution are seen as well in ERTS ratio and single-channel images as in high altitude aerial photography. Geochemical information appears to be extractable from ERTS data. Good preliminary quantitative agreement between ERTS-derived ratios and laboratory-derived reflectance ratios of rocks and minerals encourage plans to use lab data as training sets for a simple ratio gating logic approach to automatic recognition maps
Issues in visual support to real-time space system simulation solved in the Systems Engineering Simulator
The Systems Engineering Simulator has addressed the major issues in providing visual data to its real-time man-in-the-loop simulations. Out-the-window views and CCTV views are provided by three scene systems to give the astronauts their real-world views. To expand the window coverage for the Space Station Freedom workstation a rotating optics system is used to provide the widest field of view possible. To provide video signals to as many viewpoints as possible, windows and CCTVs, with a limited amount of hardware, a video distribution system has been developed to time-share the video channels among viewpoints at the selection of the simulation users. These solutions have provided the visual simulation facility for real-time man-in-the-loop simulations for the NASA space program
Internal erosion rates of a 10-kW xenon ion thruster
A 30 cm diameter divergent magnetic field ion thruster, developed for mercury operation at 2.7 kW, was modified and operated with xenon propellant at a power level of 10 kW for 567 h to evaluate thruster performance and lifetime. The major differences between this thruster and its baseline configuration were elimination of the three mercury vaporizers, use of a main discharge cathode with a larger orifice, reduction in discharge baffle diameter, and use of an ion accelerating system with larger acceleration grid holes. Grid thickness measurement uncertainties, combined with estimates of the effects of reactive residual facility background gases gave a minimum screen grid lifetime of 7000 h. Discharge cathode orifice erosion rates were measured with three different cathodes with different initial orifice diameters. Three potential problems were identified during the wear test: the upstream side of the discharge baffle eroded at an unacceptable rate; two of the main cathode tubes experienced oxidation, deformation, and failure; and the accelerator grid impingement current was more than an order of magnitude higher than that of the baseline mercury thruster. The charge exchange ion erosion was not quantified in this test. There were no measurable changes in the accelerator grid thickness or the accelerator grid hole diameters

Decentralized Delay Optimal Control for Interference Networks with Limited Renewable Energy Storage
In this paper, we consider delay minimization for interference networks with
renewable energy source, where the transmission power of a node comes from both
the conventional utility power (AC power) and the renewable energy source. We
assume the transmission power of each node is a function of the local channel
state, local data queue state and local energy queue state only. In turn, we
consider two delay optimization formulations, namely the decentralized
partially observable Markov decision process (DEC-POMDP) and Non-cooperative
partially observable stochastic game (POSG). In DEC-POMDP formulation, we
derive a decentralized online learning algorithm to determine the control
actions and Lagrangian multipliers (LMs) simultaneously, based on the policy
gradient approach. Under some mild technical conditions, the proposed
decentralized policy gradient algorithm converges almost surely to a local
optimal solution. On the other hand, in the non-cooperative POSG formulation,
the transmitter nodes are non-cooperative. We extend the decentralized policy
gradient solution and establish the technical proof for almost-sure convergence
of the learning algorithms. In both cases, the solutions are very robust to
model variations. Finally, the delay performance of the proposed solutions are
compared with conventional baseline schemes for interference networks and it is
illustrated that substantial delay performance gain and energy savings can be
achieved
