In an attempt to provide an in-depth analysis of John Elliott’s prolonged contribution to the field of educational and curricular studies, the following paper starts by locating this pedagogue’s work in the context of key ideological debates of the 20th century, whose consequences shaped the realm of the social and the human sciences. Elliott’s stand at this ideological crossroads is defined as liberal, on account of the way he tied his own educational philosophy to the ethical sphere and to the means of education, in opposition to the learning of objective knowledge. The second part of the paper explores Elliott’s pedagogy from the point of view of the potential it may have to suggest a curricular approach that, contrary to his, defends the objectivity of the social and human sciences and the need for students to fulfil and attain certain content-goals. In contrast to Elliott’s intentions, the paper arrives at the conclusion that the fact that students participate in the same social reality they must come to understand and obtain a knowledge of, poses specific pedagogical (emotional and interactional) obstacles that Elliott’s principles would be particularly well suited to overcome.
A Spinozean Unconscious? Some Remarks on Deleuze’s Problematic Inscription of Spinoza’s Ontology in Psychoanalysis
A Spinozean Unconscious? Some Remarks on Deleuze’s Problematic Inscription of Spinoza’s Ontology in Psychoanalysis
Firstly, this article attempts to disclose the structural differences holding between psychoanalysis and Spinoza’s ontology, especially when the former is read through the teachings of Jacques Lacan. Secondly, it aims at evaluating the revisions introduced in psychoanalytic theory by Gilles Deleuze —with all its shortcomings, including its idealist strain— as a consequence of his fidelity to Spinoza’s ontology.
As Nietzsche, Jorge Luis Borges sensed that eternal recurrence should somewhat relate to eternity. In his version, it is not the subject who ended up being eternal, but only the instant that returns. In contrast with Borges and Nietzsche’s eternal recurrence, this essay tries to show that we can find a thorough and comprehensive metaphysics in Auguste Blanqui’s version, which was elaborated in the nineteenth century. Finally, we will maintain that Walt Whitman’s work should be understood from Blanqui’s scheme too, and not(as Borges does) from what Whitman has in common with Nietzsche’s philosophy.
This article is inscribed in a general investigation seeking to disclose the fundamental theoretical discrepancies between ontology and psychoanalysis. This article in particular does so by trying to explain the model of structure that Gilles Deleuze posed in his ontology in relation to some of the mechanisms that Sigmund Freud discovered in the specific kind of repression proper to obsessive neurosis, as he describes it in the clinical case «The Rat Man».
Dewey’s Democratic Spiral and the Civil Rights Movement
Careful reading of John Dewey’s The Public and its Problems reveals a weak point at the stage when a given public became self-aware and proceeded to seek representation in the institutions of the state. Aside from a general emphasis on art and science, Dewey’s political theory offered no concrete discussion of the means suitable for this phase of the democratic process. Furthermore, the dichotomy between violence and the peaceful means of art and science left no space for the affirmation of nonviolence – the method most capable of amplifying democracy during the decade following Dewey’s death. Accordingly, the article hypothesizes a novel rendition of nonviolence from the standpoint of Dewey’s understanding of art as social inquiry, compares it with Martin Luther King Jr.’s theory and practice of nonviolent dramatization, and ends by presenting a Deweyan reading of the civil rights movement in terms of the framework contained in The Public and its Problems
The following article aims at explaining 1) which exactly is the model of scientific rationality involved in the capitalist comprehension of economy; 2) why is this model deficient in managing the economic reality Marx discovered —a discovery (Marx’s) that necessarily contributed new factors to the western model of scientific rationality; finally, 3) why may Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis hold, vis-Ă -vis capitalist scientific rationality, a similar place to the one enjoyed by Marx’s theory.
This article tackles the birth of modern State after the end of the Thirty Years’ War, following Schmitt and Foucault’s political thinking. Specifically, the theory of large spaces, but mostly the theory of governmentality by the French philosopher, with its special attention to biopower and the police, allows us to shed light on the main characteristics of the form State that emerged after Westphalia.
Meta-action research with pre-service teachers: a case study
This article analyses a case of action research collaboratively conducted by a university teacher and 50 students in a master's course in teacher training. Its originality resides in the socio-economic, academic, and conceptual nature of the obstacles encountered in the module; in the meta-theoretical orientation of the action research that was chosen to overcome them; and in how triangulation strategies were devised to compensate for the limitations imposed by the academic framing of the course. In spite of the brevity of the research cycle, both the structure of the course and teacher-student interaction improved rapidly and significantly, as did the latter's trust in the teacher. As a result, important advances in learning also ensued, and the pedagogical potential of this research method was thereby confirmed
