    On the Evaluation of the Asymptotic Fairness of Bonus-Malus Systems

    In this paper we try to evaluate the asymptotic fairness of bonus-malus systems, assuming the simplest case when there is no hunger for bonus.The asymptotic fairness has to be understood as the bonus-malus systemability in assessing the individual risks in the long run (see Lemaire[1995] p.xvi). Firstly we de…ne the asymptotic fairness of a bonus-malussystem following an expression that can be found in Lemaire [1985] p.168. Secondly, we de…ne a measure of the global asymptotic fairness considering the structure function of the risk group. Finally we try to calculate, for each set of transition rules and a given structure function,the scale of premiums that brings the global asymptotic fairness closest to the ideal situation where each insured pays in the long run a premium corresponding to its own claim frequency. This is possible thanks to the application of a multiobjective optimization technique named Goal Programing. We give an example illustrating the fact that the ideal case could be fairly well approached.

    Trends in phytoplankton species abundance in shelf waters of the Galician upwelling (NW Spain).

    Phytoplankton is a sentinel of ecosystem change in marine ecosystems. Composed by many species with different life-history strategies, it rapidly responds to environment changes. An analysis of time-series of the abundance of 54 phytoplankton taxa in Galicia (NW Spain) between 1989 and 2008 to determine the main trends in relation to climate and upwelling showed that most of their variability was stochastic, as seasonality and long term trends accounted for a minor fraction of the series. All trends were non linear, and taxa clustered in 4 groups according to the trend pattern but there was no defined pattern for diatoms, dinoflagellates or flagellates. No clear trend was shown by 23 taxa, 14 taxa decreased and 4 taxa increased during the early 1990s, while only 13 taxa showed a general increase through the series. In contrast, series of local environmental conditions (temperature, stratification, nutrients) and climate-related variables (atmospheric pressure indices, upwelling winds) showed a high fraction of their variability in deterministic seasonality and trends. As a result, each taxa showed independent responses to environmental and climate variablity, measured by generalized additive models. Most taxa showed a positive relationship with nutrient concentrations but only a few showed a direct relationship with stratification and upwelling. Climate variables only had measurable effects on some taxa but no common response emerged. Because its adaptation to frequent disturbances, phytoplankton communities in upwelling ecosystems appear less sensitive to changes in regional climate than communities characterised by short and well defined productive periods.IEO RADIALE

    Objectives: Sialoendoscopy is a procedure used to visualize the salivary ducts and their pathology. It can be used either as a diagnostic method to rule out inflammatory processes in the parotid and submandibular glands (diagnostic sialoendoscopy) or to treat pathological areas (stenosis, extract foreign bodies or sialolithiasis) through the use of appropriate instruments (interventionist sialoendoscopy). We attempt to prove a declining rate of salivary gland excision. Patients and method: Sialoendoscopy was performed in 8 patients. Results: Of these, 50 % of patients were diagnosed as having sialolithiasis and the other 50 % had chronic sialoadenitis. In patients with sialolithiasis, sialoendoscopy allowed the extraction of the calculus in two patients (50 %). In the remainder, sialoendoscopy provided confirmation of the diagnosis in all cases. Conclusions: Sialoendoscopy is a new technique for use in the diagnosis, treatment and post-operative management of sialolithiasis, sialoadenitis and other salivary gland pathologies

    Do individual differences influence moment-by-moment reports of emotion perceived in music and speech prosody?

    Comparison of emotion perception in music and prosody has the potential to contribute to an understanding of their speculated shared evolutionary origin. Previous research suggests shared sensitivity to and processing of music and speech, but less is known about how emotion perception in the auditory domain might be influenced by individual differences. Personality, emotional intelligence, gender, musical training and age exert some influence on discrete, summative judgments of perceived emotion in music and speech stimuli. However, music and speech are temporal phenomena, and little is known about whether individual differences influence moment-by-moment perception of emotion in these domains. A behavioral study collected two main types of data: continuous ratings of perceived emotion while listening to extracts of music and speech, using a computer interface which modeled emotion on two dimensions (arousal and valence), and demographic information including measures of personality (TIPI) and emotional intelligence (TEIQue-SF). Functional analysis of variance on the time series data revealed a small number of statistically significant differences associated with Emotional Stability, Agreeableness, musical training and age. The results indicate that individual differences exert limited influence on continuous judgments of dynamic, naturalistic expressions. We suggest that this reflects a reliance on acoustic cues to emotion in moment-by-moment judgments of perceived emotions and is further evidence of the shared sensitivity to and processing of music and speech

    RNA-binding properties and membrane insertion of Melon necrotic spot virus (MNSV) double gene block movement proteins

    Advances in structural and biochemical properties of carmovirus movement proteins (MPs) have only been obtained in p7 and p9 from Carnation mottle virus (CarMV). Alignment of carmovirus MPs revealed a low conservation of amino acid identity but interestingly, similarity was elevated in regions associated with the functional secondary structure elements reported for CarMV which were conserved in all studied proteins. Nevertheless, some differential features in relation with CarMV MPs were identified in those from Melon necrotic virus (MNSV) (p7A and p7B). p7A was a soluble non-sequence specific RNA-binding protein, but unlike CarMV p7, its central region alone could not account for the RNA-binding properties of the entire protein. In fact, a 22-amino acid synthetic peptide whose sequence corresponds to this central region rendered an apparent dissociation constant (K(d)) significantly higher than that of the corresponding entire protein (9 mM vs. 0.83-25.7 microM). This p7A-derived peptide could be induced to fold into an alpha-helical structure as demonstrated for other carmovirus p7-like proteins. Additionally, in vitro fractionation of p7B transcription/translation mixtures in the presence of ER-derived microsomal membranes strongly suggested that p7B is an integral membrane protein. Both characteristics of these two small MPs forming the double gene block (DGB) of MNSV are discussed in the context of the intra- and intercellular movement of carmovirus

    Shrinking a large dataset to identify variables associated with increased risk of Plasmodium falciparum infection in Western Kenya

    Large datasets are often not amenable to analysis using traditional single-step approaches. Here, our general objective was to apply imputation techniques, principal component analysis (PCA), elastic net and generalized linear models to a large dataset in a systematic approach to extract the most meaningful predictors for a health outcome. We extracted predictors for Plasmodium falciparum infection, from a large covariate dataset while facing limited numbers of observations, using data from the People, Animals, and their Zoonoses (PAZ) project to demonstrate these techniques: data collected from 415 homesteads in western Kenya, contained over 1500 variables that describe the health, environment, and social factors of the humans, livestock, and the homesteads in which they reside. The wide, sparse dataset was simplified to 42 predictors of P. falciparum malaria infection and wealth rankings were produced for all homesteads. The 42 predictors make biological sense and are supported by previous studies. This systematic data-mining approach we used would make many large datasets more manageable and informative for decision-making processes and health policy prioritization

    Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV

    A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of this excess.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters

    Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV. The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b, leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W' boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed coupling combinations have been placed.     Measurement of the Bottom-Strange Meson Mixing Phase in the Full CDF Data Set

    We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase \beta_s using the time evolution of B0_s -> J/\psi (->\mu+\mu-) \phi (-> K+ K-) decays in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of \beta_s and the B0_s decay-width difference \Delta\Gamma_s, and measure \beta_s in [-\pi/2, -1.51] U [-0.06, 0.30] U [1.26, \pi/2] at the 68% confidence level, in agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model value of \beta_s, we also determine \Delta\Gamma_s = 0.068 +- 0.026 (stat) +- 0.009 (syst) ps-1 and the mean B0_s lifetime, \tau_s = 1.528 +- 0.019 (stat) +- 0.009 (syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by other experiments.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, Phys.     Measurement of isolated photon production in pp and PbPb collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV

    Isolated photon production is measured in proton-proton and lead-lead collisions at nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energies of 2.76 TeV in the pseudorapidity range |eta|<1.44 and transverse energies ET between 20 and 80 GeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The measured ET spectra are found to be in good agreement with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions. The ratio of PbPb to pp isolated photon ET-differential yields, scaled by the number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions, is consistent with unity for all PbPb reaction centralities.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
