A proxy for carrying capacity of Mediterranean aquaculture
In developing a holistic and innovative approach to determining the carrying capacity in marine finfish aquaculture, we carried out a modified Delphi exercise in which we asked industry experts to identify the factors influencing the production levels of the activity under different scenarios. We disseminated and discussed three rounds of questionnaires in sectoral roundtables and workshops with experts, culminating in the development of a simple formula that adapts production levels to the physical, ecological, social and economic conditions of the activity on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. We used this formula to approach the carrying capacity of the system. Based on the developed model and its theoretical application, we estimated the carrying capacity for floating cages on the Spanish Mediterranean coast at 119,404 t—about 1.2 times the current production level of 96,440 t. We therefore concluded that, subject to the execution of an in-situ validation of the model, the production level of floating nurseries on the Spanish Mediterranean coast could be increased by up to 33.5%.KT-G was funded by a postdoctoral tenure program Juan de la Cierva Formación (FJCI-2014-20100) and Juan de la Cierva Incorporación (IJCI-2017-34174) funded by Spanish National Research Agency. The influence of the moisture content on the electrical resistance of two types of cork stoppers
The relationship between the log of the electrical resistance (ER; measured using pin electrodes) and the moisture content (MC) have not been reported in any form of cork. That is important for the cork stoppers industry because it should help in the design and verification of more precise devices for measuring cork moisture content. In this study, using linear regression techniques, different regression models of the type log(Log(R) + 1) = axh + b were derived to describe the relationship ERMC, that was measured using pin electrodes on two types of cork stoppers [natural (N) and agglomerate(AG)]. The results obtained show that in the models proposed, the moisture content of AG cork stoppers can be estimated with an error of ± 0.3%, while that of N stoppers can be estimated with an error of 0.5%. Neither the geographical origin of the N corks nor the surface treatment to which the AG corks were subjected significantly affected the proposed models. Therefore, the moisture content of cork stoppers could be measured at the industrial scale using electrical resistancetype moisture meter
Improving the Electropolymerization Properties of Fluorene-Bridged Dicarbazole Monomers through Polyfluoroalkyl Side Chains
The facile functionalization of the fluorene scaffold at the 2,7-positions was utilized to provide access to two soluble carbazole-π-carbazole derivatives CFC-H1 and CFC-F1 featuring fully hydrogenated and polyfluorinated alkyl chains at the 9-position of the fluorene π-bridging unit, respectively. The optical and electrochemical properties of the new dicarbazoles were investigated. Their electrochemical polymerization over Pt and indium tin oxide electrodes allowed the generation of electroactive polymeric films, whose physicochemical characteristics were strongly dependent on the kind of alkyl chain present on the fluorene bridge. In particular, the electropolymerization of the polyfluorinated monomer allowed the fabrication of thin films with good electrical conductivity, reversible electrochemical processes, good electrochromic properties, and enhanced water repellency with respect to its nonfluorinated analogue.Fil: Pecnikaj, Ilir. Intensive care unit discharge to the ward with a tracheostomy cannula as a risk factor for mortality: A prospective, multicenter propensity analysis
To analyze the impact of decannulation before intensive care unit
discharge on ward survival in nonexperimental conditions. DESIGN: Prospective,
observational survey. SETTING: Thirty-one intensive care units throughout Spain.
PATIENTS: All patients admitted from March 1, 2008 to May 31, 2008.
INTERVENTIONS: None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: At intensive care unit
discharge, we recorded demographic variables, severity score, and intensive care
unit treatments, with special attention to tracheostomy. After intensive care
unit discharge, we recorded intensive care unit readmission and hospital
survival. STATISTICS: Multivariate analyses for ward mortality, with Cox
proportional hazard ratio adjusted for propensity score for intensive care unit
decannulation. We included 4,132 patients, 1,996 of whom needed mechanical
ventilation. Of these, 260 (13%) were tracheostomized and 59 (23%) died in the
intensive care unit. Of the 201 intensive care unit tracheostomized survivors, 60
were decannulated in the intensive care unit and 141 were discharged to the ward
with cannulae in place. Variables associated with intensive care unit
decannulation (non-neurologic disease [85% vs. 64%], vasoactive drugs [90% vs.
76%], parenteral nutrition [55% vs. 33%], acute renal failure [37% vs. 23%], and
good prognosis at intensive care unit discharge [40% vs. 18%]) were included in a
propensity score model for decannulation. Crude ward mortality was similar in
decannulated and nondecannulated patients (22% vs. 23%); however, after
adjustment for the propensity score and Sabadell Score, the presence of a
tracheostomy cannula was not associated with any survival disadvantage with an
odds ratio of 0.6 [0.3-1.2] (p=.1). CONCLUSION: In our multicenter setting,

Partial deletion 5p and partial duplication 5q due to paternal pericentric inversion
Dismorfología, Citogenética y Clínica: Resultados de estudios sobre los datos del ECEMCDuring the meiotic process, most of the structural balanced chromosome alterations will affect either the specific chromosome pairing, or the chromosome and cromatides segregation, due to the number and type of chiasmata of the chromosomes implicated in those balanced rearrangements. Thus, the major clinical significance for normal carriers is the risk of transmition to their offspring unbalanced derivative. Here we present a malformed newborn infant with an abnormal chromosome 5 consisting in a partial deletion 5p and a partial duplication 5q. This abnormal chromosome 5 was a recombinant chromosome derived from a large paternal pericentric inversion. The cytogenetic study of the family showed that there were some other members who were carriers of the same balanced inversion. The clinical features of this patient are a mixture of some anomalies clearly related to the 5p deletion or "Cri-du-Chat" syndrome, like the crying and facial appearance, together with other that are describe on patients with 5q duplication, like the cardiac malformation. Nevertheless, he also shows some congenital defects as preauricular tags and anal atresia that, as for as we know, have not been previously described in patients with a similar chromosomal alteration. A literature review was performed of the genes localize at the chromosome regions involve in the inversion, in an effort to establish a relation with the patient phenotype.N

Acupuncture and rehabilitation of the painful shoulder: study protocol of an ongoing multicentre randomised controlled clinical trial [ISRCTN28687220]
BACKGROUND: Although the painful shoulder is one of the most common dysfunctions of the locomotor apparatus, and is frequently treated both at primary healthcare centres and by specialists, little evidence has been reported to support or refute the effectiveness of the treatments most commonly applied. According to the bibliography reviewed, physiotherapy, which is the most common action taken to alleviate this problem, has not yet been proven to be effective, because of the small size of sample groups and the lack of methodological rigor in the papers published on the subject. No reviews have been made to assess the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating this complaint, but in recent years controlled randomised studies have been made and these demonstrate an increasing use of acupuncture to treat pathologies of the soft tissues of the shoulder. In this study, we seek to evaluate the effectiveness of physiotherapy applied jointly with acupuncture, compared with physiotherapy applied with a TENS-placebo, in the treatment of painful shoulder caused by subacromial syndrome (rotator cuff tendinitis and subacromial bursitis). METHODS/DESIGN: Randomised controlled multicentre study with blind evaluation by an independent observer and blind, independent analysis. A study will be made of 465 patients referred to the rehabilitation services at participating healthcare centres, belonging to the regional public health systems of Andalusia and Murcia, these patients presenting symptoms of painful shoulder and a diagnosis of subacromial syndrome (rotator cuff tendinitis and subacromial bursitis). The patients will be randomised into two groups: 1) experimental (acupuncture + physiotherapy); 2) control (TENS-placebo + physiotherapy); the administration of rescue medication will also be allowed. The treatment period will have a duration of three weeks. The main result variable will be the change produced on Constant's Shoulder Function Assessment (SFA) Scale; as secondary variables, we will record the changes in diurnal pain intensity on a visual analogue scale (VAS), nocturnal pain intensity on the VAS, doses of non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) taken during the study period, credibility scale for the treatment, degree of improvement perceived by the patient and degree of improvement perceived by the evaluator. A follow up examination will be made at 3, 6 and 12 months after the study period has ended. Two types of population will be considered for analysis: per protocol and per intention to treat. DISCUSSION: The discussion will take into account the limitations of the study, together with considerations such as the choice of a simple, safe method to treat this shoulder complaint, the choice of the control group, and the blinding of the patients, evaluators and those responsible for carrying out the final analysis
