Making sense of Big Data – can it transform operations management?
YesThis paper focuses on the application and exploitation of Big Data to create competitive advantage. It presents
a framework of application areas and how they help the understanding of targeting and scoping specific areas
for sustainable improvement. Empirical evidence demonstrates the application of Big Data in practice and tests
the framework. An exploratory approach is adopted to the secondary research which examines vendors’ offerings. The
empirical research used the case study method. The findings indicate that there is opportunity to create sustainable competitive advantage through the application of big data. However there are social, technological and human consequences that are only now
beginning to emerge which need to be addressed if true long-term advantage is to be achieved. The research develops a framework and tests it only in 2 dimensions. This should be expanded. The vendor analysis limitations lie within the nature of the information available and the difficulties in mitigating against bias. The suggested framework can help academics and managers to identify areas of opportunity to do so, setting new levels of performance and new agendas for business. This work contributes to service operations management, building on Kranzberg (1986) and the impact of technology and on Fosso Wamba et al. (2015) by developing a systems application framework to further understanding of big data from a practical perspective to extend their research taxonomy insights. Graviton Emission into Non-Z_2 Symmetric Brane World Spacetimes
The equations for the evolution of a homogeneous brane world that emits gravitons at early times, and into a non-Z_2 symmetric bulk, are derived using an AdS-Vaidya spacetime approximation. The behaviour of the black hole mass parameters either side of the brane is analysed, and it is found that in general graviton emission leads to a decrease in the non-Z_2 symmetry. However, the behaviour of the dark radiation term in the Friedmann equation is more complex: it is shown that this term can increase or decrease due to the non-Z_2 symmetry, and can become negative in some cases, leading to H=0 and the brane universe collapsing. Constraints on the initial (nonzero) sizes of the mass parameters are therefore derived
Evaluating Policies to Implement the Paris Agreement: A Toolkit with Application to China
This paper describes a model, implemented in an Excel spreadsheet, for evaluating a wide range of fiscal and regulatory instruments policymakers might consider for implementing their Paris mitigation pledges. Policies are evaluated against a range of metrics, including impacts on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, revenue, deaths from local air pollution, economic welfare benefits and costs, and incidence across household and industry groups. The model is applied to China, the world's largest emitter, but could be readily transferred to most other countries
Branes on the Horizon
Models with extra dimensions are often invoked to resolve cosmological problems. We investigate the possibility of apparent acausality as seen by a brane-based observer resulting from signal propagation through the extra dimensions. Null geodesics are first computed in static and cosmological single-brane models, following which we derive the equations of motion for the inter-brane distance in a two-brane scenario, which we use to examine possible acausality in this more complex setup. Despite observing significant effective acausality in some situations there is no a priori solution to the horizon problem using this mechanism. In the two-brane scenario there can be significant late time violation of gravitational Lorentz invariance, resulting in the gravitational horizon being larger than the particle horizon, leading to potential signals in gravitational wave detectors
Preliminary evidence for the treatment of performance blocks in sport: The efficacy of EMDR With Graded Exposure
Sport psychologists are increasingly confronted with performance problems in sport where athletes suddenly
lose the ability to execute automatic movements (Rotheram, Maynard, Thomas, Bawden, & Francis, 2012). Described as performance blocks (Bennett, Hays, Lindsay, Olusoga, & Maynard, 2015), these problems manifest as locked, stuck, and frozen movements and are underpinned by an aggressive anxiety component. This research used both qualitative and quantitative methods in a single case study design to investigate the effectiveness of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy with graded exposure as a treatment method. The participant was a 58-year-old professional male golfer who had been suffering a
performance block for 11 years. Specifically, the participant was experiencing involuntary spasms, shaking,
muscle tension, and jerking in the lower left forearm while executing a putting stroke. Physical symptoms were coupled with extreme anxiety, panic, and frustration. The study tested the hypothesis that reprocessing related significant life events and attending to dysfunctional emotional symptoms would eliminate the performance block and related symptoms and that the individual would regain his ability to execute the affected skill. Pre-, mid-, and postintervention performance success, using the Impact of Event scale, subjective units of distress (SUD; Wolpe, 1973), and kinematic testing revealed improvements in all associated symptoms in training and competition. These findings suggest that previous life experiences might be associated with the onset of performance blocks and that EMDR with graded exposure might offer an effective treatment method
