Translational research in South Africa: evaluating implementation quality using a factorial design

Background: HealthWise South Africa: Life Skills for Adolescents (HW) is an evidence- based substance use and sexual risk prevention program that emphasizes the positive use of leisure time. Since 2000, this program has evolved from pilot testing through an efficacy trial involving over 7,000 youth in the Cape Town area. Beginning in 2011, through 2015, we are undertaking a new study that expands HW to all schools in the Metro South Education District. Objective: This paper describes a research study designed in partnership with our South African collaborators that examines three factors hypothesized to affect the quality and fidelity of HW implementation: enhanced teacher training; teacher support, structure and supervision; and enhanced school environment. Methods: Teachers and students from 56 schools in the Cape Town area will participate in this study. Teacher observations are the primary means of collecting data on factors affecting implementation quality. These factors address the practical concerns of teachers and schools related to likelihood of use and cost-effectiveness, and are hypothesized to be "active ingredients" related to high-quality program implementation in real-world settings. An innovative factorial experimental design was chosen to enable estimation of the individual effect of each of the three factors. Results: Because this paper describes the conceptualization of our study, results are not yet available. Conclusions: The results of this study may have both substantive and methodological implications for advancing Type 2 translational research

Abstract This contribution presents a river territory interdisciplinary analytical methodology which puts beside XVI and XVII Century cartography data obtained with modern photointerpretation and remote sensing techniques. We are planning a GIS system which provides an interpretable data base for hydraulic analysis aimed at river territory knowledge and management, even with the awareness of limits imposed by pre-geodetic maps georeferentiatio

Efficacy of Cydia Pomonella granulosis virus (cpgv) in controlling codling moth in the Emilia-Romagna region

During the period 1999 to 2007, numerous field trials were carried out in the Emilia Romagna region in order to test the efficacy of Cydia pomonella Granulosis Virus-based (CpGV) products in controlling codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.). The trial results demonstrate that CpGV-based products can be considered among the best larvicides currently available on the market. Good results were achieved against I generation larvae, while applications against successive generations did not always provide satisfactory control

Evaluation, management and aotcome of paediatric ovarian lesions: 67 consecutive patients surgically treated in 7 year period.

Abstract: diagnosis in any female who presents abdominal pain, a pelvic or abdominal mass, or an endocrinologic disorder. The aim of this report is to describe our strategy of care for patients with suspected ovarian lesions. We performed a retrospective chart review, and analyzed the clinical onset, the diagnostic work-up, the surgical procedure, and the outcome of all patients treated surgically for ovarian lesions at the "Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria Pisana", between 2000 and 2006. Sixty-seven patients with a mean age of 16 years (range: 6 months to 18 years) had 72 ovarian lesions (five cases were bilateral). Abdominal pain was the most common presenting symptom. All patients underwent trans-abdominal ultrasound (US), 40% had trans-vaginal ultrasound, and 21% had either abdominal computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance image (MRI). Conservative surgery was performed in the majority of cases (58%) to preserve fertility. Thirty-eight lesions (53 %) were non-neoplastic ones, 31 were benign tumors (43 %) and only 3 were malignant (5.4%). The most common ovarian lesions were functional cysts (30%) and mature cystic teratomas (26%). All patients except for one (who had a yolk sac tumor) are currently disease- free. Ovarian lesions are a rare indication for surgery in pediatric patients, in which the incidence is estimated to be around 2.6 cases per 100.000 females per year. As most of these lesions are benign, ovarian-preserving techniques should be performed when feasible to minimize the risk of decreased fertility and endocrine function
