Thesis (M.S.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2007The omnipresence of the Internet and the advances in integrated circuit technologies has expanded the potential modes of communication and data collection. Adding Internet capabilities to any electronic device greatly extends the device's user interface, allowing the user to remotely configure and monitor the device over the network through the embedded web server. The embedded web server is expected to establish two-way communication and serve dynamic web pages using very limited resources. We adapted an existing embedded web server to allow remote control and monitoring of wireless sensor networks (WSN). This required establishing an interface to the WSN and developing firmware and user programs to communicate with the remote client. An interactive and flexible web-based user management interface is developed to allow the two-way interaction between the remote user and the wireless sensor network. The embedded server generates email alerts to the administrator about critical issues in the WSN, provides secure access to the WSN control modules, etc. Two embedded web servers are developed using different hardware platforms. The first solution is a low cost, energy efficient solution with somewhat limited functionality. The other uses a more powerful microcontroller-based platform and implements a fully-functional, dynamic web server with multiple web pages.1. Introduction -- 2. Embedded web server -- 3. The use of sophisticated technologies such as computer and tele-communication are bringing classroom to the home and opening access to education for those who never entered or are unable to enter the portals of University. E-learning is an integrated and continuous approach to build knowledge skills of competitive through web enabled technologies. The digital libraries have got a significant role to play to assist effective e-learning process. Effective learning is having advantages in delivering the right content to the right person at the right time. The paper discusses need and importance of e- learning and the role of digital libraries in E-learning process

    The nature of tyrosinase

The view that tyrosinase is a mixture of a number of components has been held by several investigators. Haehn [1920] reported that potato tyrosinase lost its activity on dialysis or ultrafiltration, but regained it on addition of the ultrafiltrate or boiled juice. He concluded that the activator was inorganic in nature. Raper and Wormall [1923], while partially confirming Haehn's finding, noticed that the boiled juice of new but not of old potatoes had an accelerating effect. They also adduced evidence to show that the activator in potato juice is organic in nature. In an earlier paper [Narayanamurti and Ramaswami, 1929] it was shown that on ultrafiltration of Dolichos tyrosinase the residual liquid on the ultrafilter was active and that the addition of the ultrafiltrates to the residual liquid did not cause any acceleration. The following additional results have so far been obtained

Implementation of Hospital Infection Control Committee: A Big Step Forward Towards Improved Patient Care

Hospital infections or nosocomial infections (Greek: Nosus means disease, and Komeion means taking care of) are all those infectionsacquired by hospitalized patients, other than the cause for which they werehospitalized, and undergoing treatment. Infections which occur after 48 hours of admission, or acquired within three days after being discharged, and within a month after undergoing a surgical procedure are called as hospital infections. These infections are also called as hospital acquired infections or health-care associated infections (HAI). HAI’s contribute to severe morbidity and mortality among hospitalized patients

Capabilities -The Case of Reimbursement of Tuition Fee Scheme under Post-Matric Scholarships in Andhra Pradesh

    Get PDF
This paper attempts to understand the higher education scenario in Andhra Pradesh, India, with reference to Reimbursement of Tuition Fee (RTF) scheme that was introduced by the government of Andhra Pradesh to enhance higher educational opportunities. The scheme was introduced to encourage the students to pursue higher education in both government and private colleges, and the government bears the tuition fee by reimbursing the fee paid by the students to the colleges. The policy opened higher educational opportunities to students from economically weaker sections, who otherwise could not have pursued higher education. It is well known that the expenses involved in the higher education discourage students from weaker economic background to pursue higher education. This limits them to contain themselves with secondary school education or upper secondary school education thus making them not competent enough in gaining capabilities in this globalized world. With the introduction of RTF scheme students from weaker sections have been able to pursue higher education. This was believed to equip them with sufficient capabilities to meet the competitive work place environment with the spread of globalization. This paper attempts to briefly look at the background of the TRF policy, its necessity, implementation process, and a detailed account of different aspects covered under the scheme to enhance the higher educational opportunities to the economically weaker sections

Introduction. Patients respond very positively with nurses when they talk to them about their health related problems. Methods. This cross sectional study was carried out among nurses working in Gulf Medical College hospital and Research centre, Ajman, UAE to assess the their attitude in providing tobacco cessation counselling or advise to their patients and potential barriers they face in providing tobacco cessation care. 108 nurses participated in the study. Results. Among the nurses 87% were females, the majority were aged between 25 and 34 years, and 46.3% had a work experience of less than 5 years. Among the nurses who participated in the survey, 99.1% felt that the hospital stay was a suitable time for nurses to create awareness on tobacco and health to the patients and had a positive attitude towards creating awareness on tobacco and health to the patients. Only 0.9% had a negative attitude towards creating awareness on tobacco and health and they felt that patients might not listen to them. All nurses, irrespective of their socio-demographic characteristics had a positive attitude to motivating patients to quit tobacco use. Currently, 70.4% regularly advise their patients to avoid tobacco products. Potential barriers pointed out by nurses were: lack of time (6.3%) patients may not appreciate it (90.6%) and not part of their job (3.1%). Conclusion. The study concludes that nurses have a positive attitude in providing tobacco cessation care to their patients and they can utilize their unique knowledge and know-how to promote tobacco cessation and prevent the spread of this public health crisis. Providing advice and support for tobacco cessation by nurses would increase the chance of patients stopping tobacco use. This will create an enabling environment and greater potential for public health persons to fight the epidemic with greater vigour
