Objective. This work deals with studying and improving the insulation lifetime of polyimideinsulated thin film neural implants, or related polyimide-based medical implants. Approach. The evolution of the leak impedance of insulated conductors was investigated in saline water at 40 °C. The fabrication process as commonly found in literature for polyimide/platinum/ polyimide microelectrode arrays was compared with three possible improvements: one based on lowering the curing temperature of the lower layer, one based on chemical activation and one based on an additional plasma activation step. Main results. The lower curing temperature process was found to yield a 7.5-fold improved lifetime compared with the state of the art process. Also, the leak impedances found after soak testing are an order of magnitude higher compared to the standard process. Significance. By improving the lifetime and insulation impedance of polyimide insulation with one order of magnitude, this work increases the applicability of polyimide in chronic thin film neural implants considerably.status: publishe

Exploratory effects of structured mindfulness programs (MBCT and MBSR) on posttraumatic growth, alexithymia and type D personality

Background: Mindfulness practices might become an important intervention strategy, but also a prevention approach, with regular practice helping people to cope with adverse daily situations, adopting more conscious attitudes and behaviors, responding, instead of reacting. This exploratory study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of two of the main structured mindfulness-based interventions (MBCT, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy program; and MBSR, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program), applied to adults, to assess their impact on psychological variables. Method: Participants completed self-report measures concerning posttraumatic growth, alexithymia, dispositional mindfulness, and type D personality, in an initial moment (before the program; n=126), in a second moment (at the end of the program; n=44), and in a third moment (four months after the end of the program; n=13), thus fulfilling a 6-month study protocol. Results: The results showed a significant increase in the levels of positive psychological changes after a traumatic event, alexithymia, dispositional mindfulness, and type D personality, after participating in these programs and later, 4 months after the programs have ended, only for the MBCT group. Conclusions: Despite some limitations inherent to this type of study, that future studies should consider, the results reinforce the value of conducting and comparing the efficacy of different mindfulness programs, in isolation, or complementing individual therapy

On the Physical Vulnerability of Buildings Exposed to Landslide Hazards in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area

    Get PDF
This study assesses the physical vulnerability of buildings (PVB) in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (LMA) exposed to landslides triggered by both rainfall and earthquakes. Firstly, a statistical model (Information Value), validated with a ROC curve, was adopted to assess susceptibility to landslides caused by rainfall. Secondly, an Analytic Hierarchy Process was adopted to assess the susceptibility to landslides caused by earthquakes. In this case, the model was validated with an inventory of historical landslides in the LMA. The vulnerability assessment included all residential buildings surveyed in the 2011 Census, considering a set of vulnerability parameters, namely: the presence of reinforced structure, number of floors, conservation status, and need for repairs in the structure and finishes. These parameters, and their respective weights, were based on expert opinion and literature. Through this analysis, it was possible to identify meaningful regional interactions between the earthquake and rainfall-triggered landslides, leading to complex damage scenarios for residential buildings. It was also possible to identify risk hotspots and potential risk adaptation and mitigation measures.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
