    Categorizing Software Regression Test Results

    Customer complaints in cloud computing can originate from components of the cloud infrastructure platform or from components of third-party software. Further, cloud infrastructure components causing issues can affect customers generally or only customers under certain computing environments or using certain third-party software. Pinpointing the origin of a given customer complaint using targeted testing of components in isolation is computationally infeasible. This disclosure describes techniques that correlate test signals across multiple sources to reliably categorize issues in cloud computing to identify the origin of bad rollouts in a timely and cost-efficient manner. An issue that affects a plurality of workloads can cause test signals generated by the workloads to become correlated. By discovering correlations between signals emitted by distinct workloads, determination can be made of the workloads, customer subsets, computing environments, and third-party software impacted by the issue

    Automatically Identifying Regression Detection Conditions for System Performance Metrics

    System performance in various computing systems is measured using various benchmarks. A benchmark allows users to observe a set of performance metrics of the system as a function of time and workload, and to determine if a performance metric has deviated or regressed. However, different regression analyzers are suitable for different metrics and finding accurate analyzers often requires substantial manual effort that needs to be repeated whenever a variable that impacts a performance metric changes. This disclosure describes techniques that obtain historical data (sourced from stable workloads) about the pattern of a performance metric and use the data to train a machine learning algorithm to analyze a performance metric and determine a suitable analyzer. The analyzer configuration is selected based upon classification of the metric as noisy or not noisy, and on what is suitable for the particular metric

    Decrypting Bitcoin Prices and Adoption Rates using Google Search

    In this paper, I analyze Bitcoin price formation and adoption rates at a global and national level. In determining Bitcoin prices, I consider contemporaneous and lagged values of traditional determinants of currencies, such as inflation and industrial production, and digital currency specific factors, primarily public interest. Using monthly time-series data across five years (2011 – 2016), I find that global public interest in Bitcoin, measured by Google searches for the keyword ‘Bitcoin,’ has a positive and significant impact on Bitcoin prices. I extend the analysis to a country level by employing a proxy for adoption rates, represented by the number of local Bitcoin client downloads, which is a useful predictor of prices. I examine pooled data across 12 countries to show that searches for ‘Bitcoin’ can be used to predict adoption rates and, consequently, prices. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first academic article to study Bitcoin usage at a national level. I find that contemporaneous values of traditionally used macroeconomic determinants of currency prices, except inflation, do not have a significant impact on Bitcoin prices

    Public pedagogy and representations of higher education in popular film: New ground for the scholarship of teaching and learning

    Constructions of teaching, learning, and the university within popular culture can exert an important influence on public understandings of higher education, including those held by faculty and students. As such, they constitute a rich site of inquiry for the scholarship of teaching and learning. Drawing on the notion of film as ‘public pedagogy,’ this article analyses representations of higher education within 11 top grossing and/or critically acclaimed films released in 2014. We identify three broad themes across these texts—the purpose of higher education, relationships between students and professors, and the creation of academic identities—and consider the implications and functions of these representational patterns for teaching, learning, and SoTL. Particular attention is given to the difference between the framing of science and arts and humanities disciplines, and to how this might resonate with the contemporary ‘crisis of the humanities.

    Identification of Faulty Software Binaries from End-to-End Tests

    Software products are built from a number of interacting binaries that are rolled out asynchronously, at differing schedules and paces. When there is a problem with a software product such as a failure or sub-par performance, identifying the binaries that are the source of a product failure or sub-par performance is difficult with end-to-end tests. Additionally, an apparently failing test can be a false positive that does require any code changes to fix, yet that demands human attention. This disclosure describes techniques to automatically determine, from end-to-end tests of a software product, code binaries that are at the root of product failure or sub-par performance. For each failure signal, a history is maintained of post-triage manual feedback. The history is used to generate a confidence metric, referred to as a cube score, of a new failure being a true positive. Probable false positive test failures can be filtered out, reducing developer effort to address the apparent test failure

    The epidemiology and biology of pulmonary metastases

    Our goal in this chapter is to explore the complex processes of metastasis and why there is a predisposition for this to occur in the lung. In addition, we aim to describe the incidence of pulmonary metastases in various contexts and based on the origin of the primary tumor. There are unique characteristics of the pulmonary system that make metastases more likely to occur in the lung than anywhere else in the body. Some of these characteristics include receiving the entire cardiac output every minute, having the densest capillary bed in the body, and being the first reservoir of most lymphatic drainage entering the venous system. There are multiple postulated routes of metastasis to the pulmonary system including hematogenous and lymphatic routes with early or late dissemination. The vascularization of pulmonary metastases is variable and complex, often recruiting supply from bronchial and pulmonary origin. There are also many biochemical factors in the tumor microenvironment that play a key role in the development of lung metastases including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), interleukin-8 (IL-8), very late antigen 4 (VLA-4) and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1). Studies vary widely in reported rates of pulmonary metastases due to differences in clinical study design, however, it is commonly accepted that up to half of autopsies performed on patients who died of malignancy have pulmonary metastases. In a surgical series describing the incidence of primary cancer types with resected pulmonary metastases the most common sites were thyroid, colon, breast, genitourinary tract, skin, liver, breast, and adrenal glands

    Incidentally found rib hemangioma: Case report and discussion of management

    Rib hemangioma is a rare chest wall tumor for which few reports in the literature exist to help guide treatment. The clinical presentation, radiographic findings, and treatment strategies vary in the literature, with the majority of patients undergoing surgical resection to definitively rule out malignancy. Here, we report a 23-year-old woman with an incidentally discovered rib hemangioma, who had a history of migraines, during the workup of a severe headache refractory to medical treatment. Imaging revealed a solitary, expansile tumor arising from the posterior left third rib. Spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a fat-containing lesion with multiple vascular flow voids, non-enhancement, and high signal intensity on the T2-weighted series. It appeared to have a honeycomb core on chest computed tomography (CT). Imaging characteristics of the lesion were consistent with an intraosseous hemangioma. The tumor was managed with upfront surgical resection without a preoperative biopsy. The case was uneventful and no complications were encountered. The patient recovered well, denied any symptoms four weeks after surgery, and a follow-up chest X-ray was unremarkable. Following resection, the pathological diagnosis was concordant with the radiographic diagnosis of a rib hemangioma. Here, we review existing literature on the rare case of a rib hemangioma with a focus on the radiographic characteristics and management. Given that radiographic features of this lesion were consistent with prior reports and surgery did not change the diagnosis, we suggest that non-operative management be considered for similar lesions, as surgical resection does not appear to reveal occult malignancy in the majority of cases
