Socio-demographic correlates, HIV/AIDS related cofactors, and measures of same-sex sexual behaviour among Northern Thai male soldiers
We use data from an anonymous self-administered 1991 survey of military personnel in northern Thailand to estimate overall levels of and socio-demographic differentials in same-sex sexual behaviour in this population. Additionally, we examine the relationship between sexual experience with another male and a variety of outcomes relevant to HIV prevention and policy. Overall, 16.3 per cent of the sexually active soldiers report ever having had anal or oral sex with other males. Same-sex sexual behaviour in this sample is positively associated with several indicators of higher socio-economic status. All of the men who report having had sex with other men report having had vaginal intercourse with females as well. Comparison of our estimate of same-sex sexual behaviour with those obtained from two similar samples drawn in 1991 suggests that the lower estimates observed in the other two studies are largely due to differences in data collection methods. Regarding the HIV/AIDS-related outcomes we examined, men who have had sex with other men are significantly more likely than those who have not to have ever injected drugs, to personally know someone with HIV/AIDS, to have had sex with a female prostitute in the last six months, and to have had a sexually transmitted disease in the last six months. In this sample, men who have had sex with other men are also less knowledgeable about HIV/AIDS than are men who have not. These results are discussed in terms of their implications for HIV-prevention policy in Thailand
Thai views of sexuality and sexual behaviour
This study focuses on how married Thai men and women interpret sexuality and sexual behaviour in the context of their own social lives. We start by examining general views of male and female sexuality and then explore how these views relate to premarital, marital and extramarital heterosexual sex. Our study is based on qualitative data from a variety of segments of Thai society derived through the use of focus group discussions and individual focused in-depth interviews

The Migration and Health in Malawi (MHM) Study focuses on a key challenge in migration research: although it has long been established that migration and health are closely linked, identifying the effect of migration on various health outcomes is complicated by methodological challenges. To address these challenges, the MHM Study was designed to measure or control for important characteristics that affect both migration and health outcomes. This approach is particularly well-suited for distinguishing between the effect of migration on health and the selection of individuals of differing health status into migration classes (migrant versus non-migrant). Data are available for two waves of MHM, which took place in 2007 and 2013, and include extensive information on migration history, socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, sexual behaviors, marriage, household/family structure, risk perceptions, social networks and social capital, intergenerational relations, HIV/AIDS and other dimensions of health. Elemental Abundances in the Ejecta of Old Classical Novae from Late-Epoch Spitzer Spectra
We present Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared IRS spectra, supplemented by
ground-based optical observations, of the classical novae V1974 Cyg, V382 Vel,
and V1494 Aql more than 11, 8, and 4 years after outburst respectively. The
spectra are dominated by forbidden emission from neon and oxygen, though in
some cases, there are weak signatures of magnesium, sulfur, and argon. We
investigate the geometry and distribution of the late time ejecta by
examination of the emission line profiles. Using nebular analysis in the low
density regime, we estimate lower limits on the abundances in these novae. In
V1974 Cyg and V382 Vel, our observations confirm the abundance estimates
presented by other authors and support the claims that these eruptions occurred
on ONe white dwarfs. We report the first detection of neon emission in V1494
Aql and show that the system most likely contains a CO white dwarf.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figure
Average Properties of a Large Sample of z_abs ~ z_em associated Mg II Absorption Line Systems
We have studied a sample of 415 associated (z_ab z_em; relative velocity with
respect to QSO <3000km/s) Mg II absorption systems with 1.0<=z_ab<=1.86, in the
spectra of SDSS DR3 QSOs, to determine the dust content and ionization state in
the absorbers. We studied the dependence of these properties on the properties
of the QSOs and also, compared the properties with those of a similarly
selected sample of 809 intervening systems (apparent relative velocity with
respect to the QSO of >3000km/s), so as to understand their origin. From the
analysis of the composite spectra, as well as from the comparison of measured
equivalent widths in individual spectra, we conclude that the associated Mg II
absorbers have higher apparent ionization, measured by the strength of the C IV
absorption lines compared to the Mg II absorption lines, than the intervening
absorbers. The ionization so measured appears to be related to apparent
ejection velocity, being lower as the apparent ejection velocity is more and
more positive. There is clear evidence, from the composite spectra, for SMC
like dust attenuation in these systems; the 2175AA absorption feature is not
present. The extinction is almost twice that observed in the similarly selected
sample of intervening systems. We reconfirm that QSOs with non-zero FIRST radio
flux are intrinsically redder than the QSOs with no detection in the FIRST
survey. The incidence of associated Mg II systems in QSOs with non-zero FIRST
radio flux is 1.7 times that in the QSOs with no detection in the FIRST survey.
The associated absorbers in radio-detected QSOs which comprise about 12% of our
sample, cause 3 times more reddening than the associated absorbers in
radio-undetected QSOs. This excess reddening possibly suggests an intrinsic

Sequential Adaptive Mutations Enhance Efficient Vector Switching by Chikungunya Virus and Its Epidemic Emergence
The adaptation of Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) to a new vector, the Aedes albopictus mosquito, is a major factor contributing to its ongoing re-emergence in a series of large-scale epidemics of arthritic disease in many parts of the world since 2004. Although the initial step of CHIKV adaptation to A. albopictus was determined to involve an A226V amino acid substitution in the E1 envelope glycoprotein that first arose in 2005, little attention has been paid to subsequent CHIKV evolution after this adaptive mutation was convergently selected in several geographic locations. To determine whether selection of second-step adaptive mutations in CHIKV or other arthropod-borne viruses occurs in nature, we tested the effect of an additional envelope glycoprotein amino acid change identified in Kerala, India in 2009. This substitution, E2-L210Q, caused a significant increase in the ability of CHIKV to develop a disseminated infection in A. albopictus, but had no effect on CHIKV fitness in the alternative mosquito vector, A. aegypti, or in vertebrate cell lines. Using infectious viruses or virus-like replicon particles expressing the E2-210Q and E2-210L residues, we determined that E2-L210Q acts primarily at the level of infection of A. albopictus midgut epithelial cells. In addition, we observed that the initial adaptive substitution, E1-A226V, had a significantly stronger effect on CHIKV fitness in A. albopictus than E2-L210Q, thus explaining the observed time differences required for selective sweeps of these mutations in nature. These results indicate that the continuous CHIKV circulation in an A. albopictus-human cycle since 2005 has resulted in the selection of an additional, second-step mutation that may facilitate even more efficient virus circulation and persistence in endemic areas, further increasing the risk of more severe and expanded CHIK epidemics
Induction of GADD34 Is Necessary for dsRNA-Dependent Interferon-Ξ² Production and Participates in the Control of Chikungunya Virus Infection
Nucleic acid sensing by cells is a key feature of antiviral responses, which generally result in type-I Interferon production and tissue protection. However, detection of double-stranded RNAs in virus-infected cells promotes two concomitant and apparently conflicting events. The dsRNA-dependent protein kinase (PKR) phosphorylates translation initiation factor 2-alpha (eIF2Ξ±) and inhibits protein synthesis, whereas cytosolic DExD/H box RNA helicases induce expression of type I-IFN and other cytokines. We demonstrate that the phosphatase-1 cofactor, growth arrest and DNA damage-inducible protein 34 (GADD34/Ppp1r15a), an important component of the unfolded protein response (UPR), is absolutely required for type I-IFN and IL-6 production by mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) in response to dsRNA. GADD34 expression in MEFs is dependent on PKR activation, linking cytosolic microbial sensing with the ATF4 branch of the UPR. The importance of this link for anti-viral immunity is underlined by the extreme susceptibility of GADD34-deficient fibroblasts and neonate mice to Chikungunya virus infection
Rab7A Is Required for Efficient Production of Infectious HIV-1
Retroviruses take advantage of cellular trafficking machineries to assemble and release new infectious particles. Rab proteins regulate specific steps in intracellular membrane trafficking by recruiting tethering, docking and fusion factors, as well as the actin- and microtubule-based motor proteins that facilitate vesicle traffic. Using virological tests and RNA interference targeting Rab proteins, we demonstrate that the late endosome-associated Rab7A is required for HIV-1 propagation. Analysis of the late steps of the HIV infection cycle shows that Rab7A regulates Env processing, the incorporation of mature Env glycoproteins into viral particles and HIV-1 infectivity. We also show that siRNA-mediated Rab7A depletion induces a BST2/Tetherin phenotype on HIV-1 release. BST2/Tetherin is a restriction factor that impedes HIV-1 release by tethering mature virus particles to the plasma membrane. Our results suggest that Rab7A contributes to the mechanism by which Vpu counteracts the restriction factor BST2/Tetherin and rescues HIV-1 release. Altogether, our results highlight new roles for a major regulator of the late endocytic pathway, Rab7A, in the late stages of the HIV-1 replication cycle
