    Atom lithography without laser cooling

    Using direct-write atom lithography, Fe nanolines are deposited with a pitch of 186 nm, a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 50 nm, and a height of up to 6 nm. These values are achieved by relying on geometrical collimation of the atomic beam, thus without using laser collimation techniques. This opens the way for applying direct-write atom lithography to a wide variety of elements.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figure

    High time-resolution observations of the Vela pulsar

    We present high time resolution observations of single pulses from the Vela pulsar (PSR B0833-45) made with a baseband recording system at observing frequencies of 660 and 1413 MHz. We have discovered two startling features in the 1413 MHz single pulse data. The first is the presence of giant micro-pulses which are confined to the leading edge of the pulse profile. One of these pulses has a peak flux density in excess of 2500 Jy, more than 40 times the integrated pulse peak. The second new result is the presence of a large amplitude gaussian component on the trailing edge of the pulse profile. This component can exceed the main pulse in intensity but is switched on only relatively rarely. Fluctutation spectra reveal a possible periodicity in this feature of 140 pulse periods. Unlike the rest of the profile, this component has low net polarization and emits predominantly in the orthogonal mode. This feature appears to be unique to the Vela pulsar. We have also detected microstructure in the Vela pulsar for the first time. These same features are present in the 660 MHz data. We suggest that the full width of the Vela pulse profile might be as large as 10 ms but that the conal edges emit only rarely.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, In Press with ApJ Letter

    Cognitive processes mediate the effects of insomnia treatment:evidence from a randomized wait-list controlled trial

    INTRODUCTION: Both guided online and individual face-to-face cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) are effective in improving insomnia symptoms and sleep efficiency. Little is known about the underlying mechanisms generating this effect. The present study tests the assumption that pre-sleep arousal, sleep-related worry and dysfunctional beliefs about sleep are mediators in the effect of cognitive behavioral treatment for insomnia. METHODS: A secondary analysis was performed on data previously collected from a randomized controlled trial (N = 90). In this trial, participants were randomized to either a face-to-face CBT-I condition, an internet-delivered CBT-I condition, or a wait-list group. This article reports on the efficacy of these interventions on pre-sleep arousal, sleep-related worry, and dysfunctional beliefs. Furthermore, we investigated whether these measures mediated the treatment effect on insomnia severity and sleep efficiency. RESULTS: Both treatment modalities were efficacious for these cognitive measures; however, face-to-face treatment showed superiority over the online treatment. All three cognitive measures mediated the effect on insomnia severity. Sleep-related worry and pre-sleep arousal mediated the effect on sleep efficiency, but dysfunctional beliefs did not. CONCLUSION: Overall, these results point toward the importance of cognitive processes in the treatment of insomnia, implying that psychological treatments for insomnia may best be guided by (also) targeting these cognitive processes

    Observation of shock waves in a large Bose-Einstein condensate

    We observe the formation of shock waves in a Bose-Einstein condensate containing a large number of sodium atoms. The shock wave is initiated with a repulsive, blue-detuned light barrier, intersecting the BEC, after which two shock fronts appear. We observe breaking of these waves when the size of these waves approaches the healing length of the condensate. At this time, the wave front splits into two parts and clear fringes appear. The experiment is modeled using an effective 1D Gross-Pitaevskii-like equation and gives excellent quantitative agreement with the experiment, even though matter waves with wavelengths two orders of magnitude smaller than the healing length are present. In these experiments, no significant heating or particle loss is observed.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

    On the Role of Penning Ionization in Photoassociation Spectroscopy

    We study the role of Penning ionization on the photoassociation spectra of He(^3S)-He(^3S). The experimental setup is discussed and experimental results for different intensities of the probe laser are shown. For modelling the experimental results we consider coupled-channel calculations of the crossing of the ground state with the excited state at the Condon point. The coupled-channel calculations are first applied to model systems, where we consider two coupled channels without ionization, two coupled channels with ionization, and three coupled channels, for which only one of the excited states is ionizing. Finally, coupled-channel calculations are applied to photoassociation of He(^3S)-He(^3S) and good agreement is obtained between the model and the experimental results.Comment: 14 pages, 18 figures, submitted to the special issue on Cold Molecules of J.     Can postoperative mean transprosthetic pressure gradient predict survival after aortic valve replacement?

    BACKGROUND: In this study, we sought to determine the effect of the mean transprosthetic pressure gradient (TPG), measured at 6 weeks after aortic valve replacement (AVR) or AVR with coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) on late all-cause mortality. METHODS: Between January 1998 and March 2012, 2,276 patients (mean age 68 ± 11 years) underwent TPG analysis at 6 weeks after AVR (n = 1,318) or AVR with CABG (n = 958) at a single institution. Mean TPG was 11.6 ± 7.8 mmHg and median TPG 11 mmHg. Based on the TPG, the patients were split into three groups: patients with a low TPG (<10 mmHg), patients with a medium TPG (10–19 mmHg) and patients with a high TPG (≄20 mmHg). Cox proportional-hazard regression analysis was used to determine univariate predictors and multivariate independent predictors of late mortality. RESULTS: Overall survival for the entire group at 1, 3, 5, and 10 years was 97, 93, 87 and 67 %, respectively. There was no significant difference in long-term survival between patients with a low, medium or high TPG (p = 0.258). Independent predictors of late mortality included age, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, renal dysfunction, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a history of a cerebrovascular accident and cardiopulmonary bypass time. Prosthesis–patient mismatch (PPM), severe PPM and TPG measured at 6 weeks postoperatively were not significantly associated with late mortality. CONCLUSIONS: TPG measured at 6 weeks after AVR or AVR with CABG is not an independent predictor of all-cause late mortality and there is no significant difference in long-term survival between patients with a low, medium or high TPG

    Observations and Modelling of Relativistic Spin Precession in PSR J1141-6545

    Observations of the binary pulsar PSR J1141-6545 using the Parkes radio telescope over 9.3 years show clear time-variations in pulse width, shape and polarization. We interpret these variations in terms of relativistic precession of the pulsar spin axis about the total angular momentum vector of the system. Over the nine years, the pulse width at the 50% level has changed by more than a factor of three. Large variations have also been observed in the 1400-MHz mean flux density. The pulse polarization has been monitored since 2004 April using digital filterbank systems and also shows large and systematic variations in both linear and circular polarization. Position angle variations, both across the pulse profile and over the data span, are complex, with major differences between the central and outer parts of the pulse profile. Modelling of the observed position angle variations by relativistic precession of the pulsar spin axis shows that the spin-orbit misalignment angle is about 110 deg and that the precessional phase has passed through 180 deg during the course of our observations. At the start of our observations, the line-of-sight impact parameter was about 4 deg in magnitude and it reached a minimum very close to 0 deg around early 2007, consistent with the observed pulse width variations. We have therefore mapped approximately one half of the emission beam, showing that it is very asymmetric with respect to the magnetic axis. The derived precessional parameters imply that the pre-supernova star had a mass of about 2 Msun and that the supernova recoil kick velocity was relatively small. With the reversal in the rate of change of the impact parameter, we predict that over the next decade we will see a reversed "replay" of the variations observed in the past decade.Comment: 45 pages, 19 figures, 6 tables, accepted by Astrophysical Journa

    Vibrational state distribution of 2-Na^+ ions created in ultracold collisions

    The vibrational distribution P(v) of 2-Na^+ ions created in ultracold collisions in a magneto-optical trap has been deter- mined. Only two vibrational states with v = 2 and 3 are popu- lated and we find P(2)=0.29±0.02 and P(3)=0.71±0.02. The results provide conclusive evidence that the ionization mech- anism is photo-associative autoionization,and not photo- associative photoionization and will form a fundamental test for the theoretical description of the process
