    Teaching respect: a philosophical analysis

    According to a Zulu proverb a human being can only become truly human because of others. Each person can only become more human, more himself- regardless of his sex - through the co-involvement of others. It is the love for one’s neighbour and the respect one has for him/her as a person which makes one consider the other party's feelings, viewpoints and circumstances. In order to arrive at a situation of peaceful coexistence it is important to realize that human attitudes and a mature life style evolve through a process of learning and interaction with others. It is a timeconsuming and costly process which starts at infancy and continues throughout someone's life. Instruction concerning interpersonal relations and the teaching of respect cannot be confined to individual lessons or working sessions at home or in school. Discussions and conversations concerning interpersonal relations need to form an integral and natural part of a child’s life within the home environment and throughout the pupil's school career. It is senseless if educators talk about the importance of teaching respect only to reveal disrespectful behaviour themselves, or to talk about the importance of self-esteem in the paying of respect whilst causing children to feel negative about themselves. To be able to express respect to other human beings, one needs to be respected. A child needs to experience how it feels when homage is paid. The following rule of life applies in this regard: one can never give if one has never received respect

    An investigation of the perceptions of South African students with regards to accelerated learning courses

    The cost of repeating a module has both financial and social implications. The social implications include increased workloads when repeating a module and students often not being able to graduate within the prescribed minimum course period. A possible solution for this is the use of accelerated learning courses, in the form of summer or winter schools. These schools provide students with another opportunity to pass a module, during the summer or winter recess, using an accelerated learning mode, and consequently complete modules with prerequisites of failed modules in the following year. Using an accelerated learning approach, a summer or winter school covers a large portion of the content in semester or year modules in a shortened timeframe outside the normal academic period. Using a questionnaire approach, the various perceptions of first year students at the end of the academic year regarding the use of these schools were obtained and analysed. The timing of the end of the academic year allows students to familiarise themselves with the various accelerated learning courses offered to them throughout the academic year. The findings suggest that students have a positive perception of these schools despite most of them not having had previous experience of completing an accelerated learning course. Although previous literature has indicated that students are hesitant to complete finance-related modules in an accelerated learning format versus traditional semester and year modules, the perceptions indicate that students are willing to engage in financial modules, with the students identifying that the benefits of these accelerated learning courses exceed the cost. The findings suggest that students who are presented with various non-academic obstacles throughout the traditional module are able to use summer or winter schools as a way to reduce exposure to these obstacles and complete an accelerated learning course. The use of these schools therefore presents an area for module developers to consider when implementing these schools as a way to improve throughput rates, thereby contributing in a positive way to students’ financial and social health

    Stimulant use among prehospital emergency care personnel in Gauteng Province, South Africa

    Background. Emergency medical service (EMS) personnel are exposed to high levels of psychological, physical and emotional stressors. There has been an increase in stimulant use among healthcare professionals worldwide. There is a paucity of data pertaining to the use of stimulant products among EMS personnel in South Africa (SA).Objectives. To determine the prevalence of and other aspects pertaining to use of stimulant products among EMS personnel in Gauteng Province, SA.Methods. A prospective cross-sectional study using a questionnaire-based model was used to survey EMS personnel in Gauteng.Results. Of the 315 respondents who completed the questionnaire, 310 (98.4%) reported use of stimulant products, 295 (93.7%) consumed tea/coffee, 187 (59.4%) consumed commercial energy drinks, 60 (19.0%) used caffeinated energy-enhancing tablets, 14 (4.4%) used non-caffeinated prescription stimulant medications, 50 (15.9%) used illicit drugs, 134 (42.5%) exceeded the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of caffeine, 201 (63.8%) exceeded the RDA of sugar, 231 (73.3%) experienced difficulty remaining awake during a shift, 148 (47.8%) used stimulants off shift, and 71 (22.5%) experienced insomnia. Common reasons for use of stimulants were enjoyment (n=218; 69.2%), to stay awake (n=125; 39.7%) and improvement of physical and mental performance (n=94; 29.8%).Conclusions. The high prevalence of stimulant use among respondents is a cause for concern. Strategies to address it should be aimed at promoting awareness and education, improving working conditions, enhancing support structures, and regulating the stimulant content of commercial products.

    "Ultralow" sliding wear polytetrafluoro ethylene nanocomposites with functionalized graphene

    The dry friction and sliding wear behavior of sintered polytetrafluoro ethylene containing various amounts of functionalized graphene were studied in this work. Graphene was incorporated in 0, 0.25, 0.75, 1, 2 and 4 vol.%, respectively. Sliding wear tests were performed in ring(metal)-on-plate(polytetrafluoro ethylene) test rig under ambient temperature setting 1 m/s sliding speed and 1 MPa contact pressure. The dynamic coefficient of friction and specific wear rate (ws) data were determined. Very low coefficient of frictions (0.12–0.14) were measured for polytetrafluoro ethylene containing 2 or 4 vol.% graphene, which was attributed to the formation of a tribofilm on the countersurface. Specific wear rate went through a maximum (peaked at doubling that of the unmodified polytetrafluoro ethylene at about 0.75 vol.% graphene) as a function of graphene content. Ultralow wear rate data in the range of 10−6 mm3/(N.m) were measured for the polytetrafluoro ethylene nanocomposites with 2 and 4 vol.% graphene. This was reasoned by the formation of a robust tribofilm, the development of which was followed by scanning electron microscopy by inspecting the worn surface of polytetrafluoro ethylene nanocomposites and that of the steel ring of the ring(metal)-on-plate(polytetrafluoro ethylene) test rig. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic results confirmed the formation of carboxyl groups in the tribofilm. They were supposed to react with the functional groups of graphene and to create complexes with the metal countersurface ensuring the tribofilm with high adhesion and cohesion strengths. </jats:p

    Compliance with hygiene practices among healthcare workers in the intensive care unit

    Background. Intensive care unit (ICU)-related healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) are two to three times higher in lower-income countries than in higher-income ones. Hand cleansing and other hygiene measures have been documented as one of the most effective measures in combating the transmission of HCAIs. There is a paucity of data pertaining to hygiene practices in the ICU in developing countries.Objectives. To determine compliance with hygiene practices among healthcare workers in a tertiary hospital ICU.Methods. Hygiene practices of healthcare workers in a tertiary academic hospital ICU in Johannesburg, South Africa, were discreetly observed over an 8-week period. Compliance with hand cleansing and other hygiene practices was documented and analysed. Retrospective consent was obtained, and subject confidentiality was maintained. Results. A total of 745 hygiene opportunities were observed. Of the 156 opportunities where handwashing with soap and water was indicated (20.9%), compliance was noted in 89 cases (57.1%), while an alcohol-based hand rub was inappropriately used in 34 cases (21.8%) and no hand hygiene was performed in the remaining 33 cases (21.1%). Of the 589 opportunities where an alcohol-based hand-rub was indicated, it was used in 312 cases (53.0%). Compliance with the donning of disposable surgical gloves, disposable plastic aprons and being ‘bare below the elbows’ was noted in 114 (90.6%), 108 (71.1%) and 355 (47.7%) opportunities, respectively, where these were indicated.Conclusions. Overall compliance with hygiene measures among healthcare workers in the ICU was suboptimal in this study, but in keeping with general international trends. Regular retraining of staff, frequent reminders, peer oversight and regular audits may improve compliance

    Non-compliance with treatment by epileptic patients at George Provincial Hospital

    Non-compliance with anti-epileptic drug treatment in the George area, resulting in recurrent seizures and visits to the emergency department of the George Provincial Hospital, has been identified as a social and economic problem. The aim of this study was to determine the socio-economic and medical factors, the information given to patients by healthcare workers, and the understanding of patients living with epilepsy who presented to the emergency department with seizures. Methods A descriptive study design was employed and the data-collection tools were a questionnaire and structured interview. Results The median age of the study population was 32 years. The patients had suffered from epilepsy for a median of two years and visited a clinic for a median of seven times a year. The median education level was primary school and three quarters had no employment or government grant. The majority did not understand the disease, the side effects of the medication and why they should be on medication. In addition, it became apparent from patient reports that healthcare workers showed a lack of counselling skills, time and appropriate knowledge. Conclusions There is a general lack of understanding of epilepsy by the patient. Not only were the patients uninformed, but they also showed apathy towards the management of their condition.South African Family Practice Vol. 49 (9) 2007: pp. 1

    Interactions between Grape Maturity Indices and the Quality and Composition of Chenin blanc and Colom bar Wines from Different Localities

    Three grape maturity indices viz. degrees Balling (0 B), total titratable acidity (TT A) and the 0 B.pH product of musts were compared regarding their ability to predict optimum quality for Chenin blanc and Colombar wines. Comprehensive analytical data from 168 musts and corresponding wines for the 1978, 1979 and 1980 vintages from the Stellenbosch, Robertson and Lutzville areas were accumulated, and subjected to principal component analysis using variables and variable ratios selected by correlation to quality weighting. These results indicated that the two cultivars differed appreciably with respect to the value of all three measured indices. From this study it was not possible to select a specific index to predict optimum maturity in all cases. Optimum values for each index differed according to geographic locality

    Performance indicators that discriminate winning and losing in elite men’s and women’s Rugby Union

    This study aimed to identify performance indicators that discriminate winning and losing in elite men’s and women’s Rugby Union during the latest World Cup competitions. The knockout stages of the men’s 2015 Rugby World Cup (n = 8) and women’s 2014 Rugby World Cup (n = 8) were compared. Findings suggest that in the men’s game, winning teams kicked a greater percentage of possession in the opposition 22–50 m with a view to gaining territory and pressuring the opposition (winners = 16%, losers = 7%). In the women’s game successful teams adopted a more possession-driven attacking approach in this area of the pitch. Successful women’s teams appear more willing to attack with ball in hand following a kick receipt and adopt a more expansive game through attacking with wider carries in the outside channels. The percentage of lineouts won on the opposition ball was found to be an important performance indicator that discriminates winners and losers, regardless of sex (winners = 18%, losers = 11%). Findings suggest successful men’s and women’s teams adopt different tactical approaches to knockout competitions, this knowledge should be used as a basis for coaches to develop tactical approaches and training methods which are sex dependent
