Exactly solvable path integral for open cavities in terms of quasinormal modes
We evaluate the finite-temperature Euclidean phase-space path integral for
the generating functional of a scalar field inside a leaky cavity. Provided the
source is confined to the cavity, one can first of all integrate out the fields
on the outside to obtain an effective action for the cavity alone.
Subsequently, one uses an expansion of the cavity field in terms of its
quasinormal modes (QNMs)-the exact, exponentially damped eigenstates of the
classical evolution operator, which previously have been shown to be complete
for a large class of models. Dissipation causes the effective cavity action to
be nondiagonal in the QNM basis. The inversion of this action matrix inherent
in the Gaussian path integral to obtain the generating functional is therefore
nontrivial, but can be accomplished by invoking a novel QNM sum rule. The
results are consistent with those obtained previously using canonical

Use of virtual reality in preoperative education of cardiac surgery patients – A feasibility study
Objective: A Virtual Patient Tour (VPT) was developed to inform cardiac surgery patients about their hospitalization from the admission to their postoperative stay on the ward. The objective of our study was to assess the feasibility and acceptability of this VPT following the framework of the Virtual Reality Clinical Outcomes Research Experts Committee. Methods: In this single-centre cross-sectional study, adult patients admitted to the hospital for elective cardiac surgery were included. Acceptability, usability, and tolerability were measured by the validated questionnaires Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (acceptability), System Usability Scale (usability), and Virtual Reality Sickness Questionnaire (tolerability). Descriptive statistics were used for the analysis. Results: Twenty-eight participants used the VPT. Results showed high acceptability (mean 16.7 ± 1.5), acceptable usability (mean 86.7 ± 9.3), and high tolerability (sickness score, median 7.1 % [0–17.1 %]). Conclusion: The use of the VPT is a feasible and promising technique. The next step is to optimize the content and technique of the VPT based on the suggestions of the participants. Practice implications: We recommend incorporating the VPT into preoperative patient education in addition to the routine information in cardiac surgery patients
Children's daily travel to school in Johannesburg-Soweto, South Africa: geography and school choice in the Birth to Twenty cohort study
This paper has two aims: to explore approaches to the measurement of children’s daily travel to school in a context of limited geospatial data availability, and to provide data regarding school choice and distance travelled to school in Soweto-Johannesburg, South Africa. The paper makes use of data from the Birth to Twenty cohort study (n=1428) to explore three different approaches to estimating school choice and travel to school. Firstly, straight-line distance between home and school is calculated. Secondly, census geography is used to determine whether a child's home and school fall in the same area. Thirdly, distance data are used to determine whether a child attends the nearest school. Each of these approaches highlights a different aspect of mobility, and all provide valuable data. Overall, primary school aged children in Soweto-Johannesburg are shown to be travelling substantial distances to school on a daily basis. Over a third travel more than 3km, one-way, to school, 60% attend schools outside of the suburb in which they live, and only 18% attend their nearest school. These data provide evidence for high levels of school choice in Johannesburg-Soweto, and that families and children are making substantial investments in pursuit of high quality educational opportunities. Additionally, these data suggest that two patterns of school choice are evident: one pattern involving travel of substantial distances and requiring a higher level of financial investment, and a second pattern, involving choice between more local schools, requiring less travel and a more limited financial investment
Generation of entangled states of two atoms inside a leaky cavity
An in-depth theoretical study is carried out to examine the
quasi-deterministic entanglement of two atoms inside a leaky cavity. Two
-type three-level atoms, initially in their ground states, may become
maximally entangled through the interaction with a single photon. By working
out an exact analytic solution, we show that the probability of success depends
crucially on the spectral function of the injected photon. With a cavity
photon, one can generate a maximally entangled state with a certain probability
that is always less than 50%. However, for an injected photon with a narrower
spectral width, this probability can be significantly increased. In particular,
we discover situations in which entanglement can be achieved in a single trial
with an almost unit probability
Computational models in plant-pathogen interactions: the case of Phytophthora infestans
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Phytophthora infestans </it>is a devastating oomycete pathogen of potato production worldwide. This review explores the use of computational models for studying the molecular interactions between <it>P. infestans </it>and one of its hosts, <it>Solanum tuberosum</it>.</p> <p>Modeling and conclusion</p> <p>Deterministic logistics models have been widely used to study pathogenicity mechanisms since the early 1950s, and have focused on processes at higher biological resolution levels. In recent years, owing to the availability of high throughput biological data and computational resources, interest in stochastic modeling of plant-pathogen interactions has grown. Stochastic models better reflect the behavior of biological systems. Most modern approaches to plant pathology modeling require molecular kinetics information. Unfortunately, this information is not available for many plant pathogens, including <it>P. infestans</it>. Boolean formalism has compensated for the lack of kinetics; this is especially the case where comparative genomics, protein-protein interactions and differential gene expression are the most common data resources.</p
Multiple Translocation of the AVR-Pita Effector Gene among Chromosomes of the Rice Blast Fungus Magnaporthe oryzae and Related Species
Magnaporthe oryzae is the causal agent of rice blast disease, a devastating problem worldwide. This fungus has caused breakdown of resistance conferred by newly developed commercial cultivars. To address how the rice blast fungus adapts itself to new resistance genes so quickly, we examined chromosomal locations of AVR-Pita, a subtelomeric gene family corresponding to the Pita resistance gene, in various isolates of M. oryzae (including wheat and millet pathogens) and its related species. We found that AVR-Pita (AVR-Pita1 and AVR-Pita2) is highly variable in its genome location, occurring in chromosomes 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and supernumerary chromosomes, particularly in rice-infecting isolates. When expressed in M. oryzae, most of the AVR-Pita homologs could elicit Pita-mediated resistance, even those from non-rice isolates. AVR-Pita was flanked by a retrotransposon, which presumably contributed to its multiple translocation across the genome. On the other hand, family member AVR-Pita3, which lacks avirulence activity, was stably located on chromosome 7 in a vast majority of isolates. These results suggest that the diversification in genome location of AVR-Pita in the rice isolates is a consequence of recognition by Pita in rice. We propose a model that the multiple translocation of AVR-Pita may be associated with its frequent loss and recovery mediated by its transfer among individuals in asexual populations. This model implies that the high mobility of AVR-Pita is a key mechanism accounting for the rapid adaptation toward Pita. Dynamic adaptation of some fungal plant pathogens may be achieved by deletion and recovery of avirulence genes using a population as a unit of adaptation
