    Parameter Estimation and Predictive Speed Control of Chopper-Fed Brushed DC Motors

    This paper presents an effective speed control method for brushed DC motors fed by a DC chopper using the concept of Finite Control Set-Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC). As this control algorithm requires the parameters of the controlled object, the estimation of motor parameters is first performed by using two types of data. The first data includes the output speed response corresponding to the step input voltage to obtain the transfer function in the no-load regime. The second data consists of the motor speed and armature current when a load torque is applied to the motor shaft. The discrete-time equation of the motor armature circuit is used to obtain the future values of the armature circuit current and the motor speed. A cost function is defined based on the difference between the reference and predicted motor speed. The optimal switching states of the DC chopper are selected corresponding to the maximum value of the cost function. The performance of the proposed speed control algorithm is validated on an experimental system. The simulation and experimental results obtained show that the MPC controller can outperform the conventional proportional-integral (PI) controller

    A Machine Learning-based Approach to Vietnamese Handwritten Medical Record Recognition

    Handwritten text recognition has been an active research topic within computer vision division. Existing deep-learning solutions are practical; however, recognizing Vietnamese handwriting has shown to be a challenge with the presence of extra six distinctive tonal symbols and extra vowels. Vietnam is a developing country with a population of approximately 100 million, but has only focused on digitalization transforms in recent years, and so Vietnam has a significant number of physical documents, that need to be digitized. This digitalization transform is urgent when considering the public health sector, in which medical records are mostly still in hand-written form and still are growing rapidly in number. Digitization would not only help current public health management but also allow preparation and management in future public health emergencies. Enabling the digitalization of old physical records will allow efficient and precise care, especially in emergency units. We proposed a solution to Vietnamese text recognition that is combined into an end-to-end document-digitalization system. We do so by performing segmentation to word-level and then leveraging an artificial neural network consisting of both convolutional neural network (CNN) and a long short-term memory recurrent neural network (LSTM) to propagate the sequence information. From the experiment with the records written by 12 doctors, we have obtained encouraging results of 6.47% and 19.14% of CER and WER respectively

    Trends in Salt Consumption and Reduction Practices in Vietnam During 2015–2021: Analyzing Urinary Sodium Levels Among 18–69 Aged Populations

    ObjectivesThis study investigates changes in salt intake and reduction practices among Vietnamese adults (ages 18–69), focusing on high-risk groups for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like hypertension, diabetes, and elevated BMI.MethodsParticipants aged 18–69 from the 2015 and 2020 STEPs surveys provided data on the spot urine test. Average daily salt intake was calculated using the Intersalt Southern European equation. The prevalence of excessive salt intake was assessed, along with subgroup analyses based on demographic factors and NCD risk.ResultsAverage salt intake decreased significantly from 9.42 g/day in 2015 to 8.07 g/day in 2020 (p < 0.01), with the most substantial decline among younger individuals. The percentage exceeding the global average of 10.78 g/day dropped from 24.88% to 8.31%. High-risk groups, including those with hypertension and diabetes, consumed more salt but also showed reductions. Awareness of salt reduction advice remained low, with only 60.9% of the general population informed.ConclusionWhile progress has been made in reducing salt intake, ongoing public health initiatives are essential to meet recommended levels, especially for high-risk populations

    Adaptive Twisting Sliding Control for Integrated Attack UAV’s Autopilot and Guidance

    This paper investigates an adaptive sliding-mode control for an integrated UAV autopilot and guidance system. First, a two-dimensional mathematical model of the system is derived by considering the incorporated lateral dynamics and relative kinematics of the UAV and its potential target of attack. Then, a sliding surface is derived utilizing the zero-effort miss distance. An adaptive twisting sliding mode (ATSMC) algorithm is applied to the integrated system. Simulation and comparisons have been accomplished. The results show our proposed design performs well in interception precision, even with high nonlinearity, uncertainties, disturbances, and abrupt changes in the target’s movement, thanks to the adaptation strategy

    The transfer and decay of maternal antibody against Shigella sonnei in a longitudinal cohort of Vietnamese infants.

    BACKGROUND: Shigella sonnei is an emergent and major diarrheal pathogen for which there is currently no vaccine. We aimed to quantify duration of maternal antibody against S. sonnei and investigate transplacental IgG transfer in a birth cohort in southern Vietnam. METHODS AND RESULTS: Over 500-paired maternal/infant plasma samples were evaluated for presence of anti-S. sonnei-O IgG and IgM. Longitudinal plasma samples allowed for the estimation of the median half-life of maternal anti-S. sonnei-O IgG, which was 43 days (95% confidence interval: 41-45 days). Additionally, half of infants lacked a detectable titer by 19 weeks of age. Lower cord titers were associated with greater increases in S. sonnei IgG over the first year of life, and the incidence of S. sonnei seroconversion was estimated to be 4/100 infant years. Maternal IgG titer, the ratio of antibody transfer, the season of birth and gestational age were significantly associated with cord titer. CONCLUSIONS: Maternal anti-S. sonnei-O IgG is efficiently transferred across the placenta and anti-S. sonnei-O maternal IgG declines rapidly after birth and is undetectable after 5 months in the majority of children. Preterm neonates and children born to mothers with low IgG titers have lower cord titers and therefore may be at greater risk of seroconversion in infancy

    A prospective multi-center observational study of children hospitalized with diarrhea in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

    We performed a prospective multicenter study to address the lack of data on the etiology, clinical and demographic features of hospitalized pediatric diarrhea in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam. Over 2,000 (1,419 symptomatic and 609 non-diarrheal control) children were enrolled in three hospitals over a 1-year period in 2009-2010. Aiming to detect a panel of pathogens, we identified a known diarrheal pathogen in stool samples from 1,067/1,419 (75.2%) children with diarrhea and from 81/609 (13.3%) children without diarrhea. Rotavirus predominated in the symptomatic children (664/1,419; 46.8%), followed by norovirus (293/1,419; 20.6%). The bacterial pathogens Salmonella, Campylobacter, and Shigella were cumulatively isolated from 204/1,419 (14.4%) diarrheal children and exhibited extensive antimicrobial resistance, most notably to fluoroquinolones and third-generation cephalosporins. We suggest renewed efforts in generation and implementation of policies to control the sale and prescription of antimicrobials to curb bacterial resistance and advise consideration of a subsidized rotavirus vaccination policy to limit the morbidity due to diarrheal disease in Vietnam

    Evaluation of Luminex xTAG Gastrointestinal Pathogen Panel Assay for Detection of Multiple Diarrheal Pathogens in Fecal Samples in Vietnam.

    Diarrheal disease is a complex syndrome that remains a leading cause of global childhood morbidity and mortality. The diagnosis of enteric pathogens in a timely and precise manner is important for making treatment decisions and informing public health policy, but accurate diagnosis is a major challenge in industrializing countries. Multiplex molecular diagnostic techniques may represent a significant improvement over classical approaches. We evaluated the Luminex xTAG gastrointestinal pathogen panel (GPP) assay for the detection of common enteric bacterial and viral pathogens in Vietnam. Microbiological culture and real-time PCR were used as gold standards. The tests were performed on 479 stool samples collected from people admitted to the hospital for diarrheal disease throughout Vietnam. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated for the xTAG GPP for the seven principal diarrheal etiologies. The sensitivity and specificity for the xTAG GPP were >88% for Shigellaspp.,Campylobacterspp., rotavirus, norovirus genotype 1/2 (GI/GII), and adenovirus compared to those of microbiological culture and/or real-time PCR. However, the specificity was low (∼60%) for Salmonella species. Additionally, a number of important pathogens that are not identified in routine hospital procedures in this setting, such as Cryptosporidiumspp. and Clostridium difficile, were detected with the GPP. The use of the Luminex xTAG GPP for the detection of enteric pathogens in settings, like Vietnam, would dramatically improve the diagnostic accuracy and capacity of hospital laboratories, allowing for timely and appropriate therapy decisions and a wider understanding of the epidemiology of pathogens associated with severe diarrheal disease in low-resource settings

    Impact of trained human resources, adoption of technology and international standards on the improvement of accounting and auditing activities in the agricultural sector in Viet Nam

    Recently, the adoption of accounting and auditing standards in the agricultural sector has been a global phenomenon that has gained increasing trend due to the significant role of the agricultural industry in the country's economy. Thus, the present study examines the impact of trained human resources, technology adoption, and international standards on improving accounting and auditing activities in the agricultural sector in Vietnam. The present research investigates the moderating impact of agricultural, institutional support among the linkage of trained human resources, technology adoption, international standards, and improvement of accounting and auditing activities in the agricultural sector. The present article has adopted the questionnaires to gather the primary data from selected respondents. The current research has applied the smart-PLS to test the study's hypotheses. The results revealed that trained human resources, technology adoption, and international standards positively impact the improvement of accounting and auditing activities in the agricultural sector.     A Clinical and Epidemiological Investigation of the First Reported Human Infection With the Zoonotic Parasite Trypanosoma evansi in Southeast Asia.

    BACKGROUND: Trypanosomais a genus of unicellular parasitic flagellate protozoa.Trypanosoma bruceispecies and Trypanosoma cruziare the major agents of human trypanosomiasis; other Trypanosomaspecies can cause human disease, but are rare. In March 2015, a 38-year-old woman presented to a healthcare facility in southern Vietnam with fever, headache, and arthralgia. Microscopic examination of blood revealed infection with Trypanosoma METHODS: Microscopic observation, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of blood samples, and serological testing were performed to identify the infecting species. The patient's blood was screened for the trypanocidal protein apolipoprotein L1 (APOL1), and a field investigation was performed to identify the zoonotic source. RESULTS: PCR amplification and serological testing identified the infecting species as Trypanosoma evansi.Despite relapsing 6 weeks after completing amphotericin B therapy, the patient made a complete recovery after 5 weeks of suramin. The patient was found to have 2 wild-type APOL1 alleles and a normal serum APOL1 concentration. After responsive animal sampling in the presumed location of exposure, cattle and/or buffalo were determined to be the most likely source of the infection, with 14 of 30 (47%) animal blood samples testing PCR positive forT. evansi. CONCLUSIONS: We report the first laboratory-confirmed case ofT. evansiin a previously healthy individual without APOL1 deficiency, potentially contracted via a wound while butchering raw beef, and successfully treated with suramin. A linked epidemiological investigation revealed widespread and previously unidentified burden ofT. evansiin local cattle, highlighting the need for surveillance of this infection in animals and the possibility of further human cases
