    Lesbian, anorexic, disabled, and big: Other ways of being a female physical education teacher

    Research has shown that Physical Education (PE) is a white, male, and able body-dominated profession, particularly in Spain. When some female pre-service PE teachers, who had a difficult relationship with their bodies and sports abilities, enrol in such a degree, some of these problematic relations come to light. Participants for this study were four female pre-service teachers who self-identified as lesbian, anorexic, visually impaired, and big respectively. Data were collected through participant-produced texts, graphical representations, and interviews. The authors then reconstructed the participants’ stories which are presented in the form of narratives. The conceptual tool of embodying norm-criticality helped us to highlight the importance of critical reflection about own beliefs, past experiences and understandings, and their influence on pedagogical practices in PE. This study contributes to the push towards a change of the stereotypical beliefs of what a PE teacher should be or look like, and in this way, emphasises the vast benefits of diversifying PE teachers’ beliefs and understandings

    The influence of consumerism on Spanish physical education teachers

    Consumer culture and neoliberalism have significantly influenced contemporary globalised, Western(ised) and highly visual societies. These influences have also infiltrated physical education settings, contributing to market-driven surveillance of physical education teachers’ physical appearance. This paper examines the reflections of a group of physical education teachers working at the primary and secondary levels in Spain concerning subjectivities of bodies and professional practices. It draws on semi-structured interview data and the Foucauldian concepts of Panopticon and surveillance to explore the ways in which the participants were influenced by the market and neoliberalism. The results of the study invite us to reflect on how images and messages from media may promote certain expectations for physical education teachers concerning physical appearance, dress and sports supplements consumption. The findings have implications for teacher education and the preparation of physical education teachers to resist dominant discourses promoted by the media

    Electrochemical extraction of lithium by ion insertion from natural brine using a flow-by reactor: Possibilities and limitations

    Experimental results on the sustainable extraction of lithium chloride from natural brine (Salar de Hombre Muerto, Argentina) using a flow-by electrochemical reactor at constant applied current are presented.     Phytochemical study of the Genus Salpichroa (Solanaceae), chemotaxonomic considerations, and biological evaluation in prostate and breast cancer cells

    Twelve Salpichroa taxa have been phytochemically analyzed. From the aerial parts of S. scandens, four known salpichrolides A, C, I, S, and an unreported withanolide named salpichrolide V (1), were isolated. In S. dependens, S. gayi, S. glandulosa subsp. glandulosa, S. glandulosa subps. weddellii, S. leucantha, S. micrantha, S. microloba, S. proboscidea, S. ramosissima, S. tristis var. tristis, and S. weberbauerii, no withanolides were found. The chemical content of ca. 85% of the Salpichroa taxa is in agreement with molecular studies, which suggest that Salpichroa and Jaborosa, a genus considered morphologically close to Salpichroa, are distant in the systematic of the Solanoideae subfamily. Moreover, the in vitro cytotoxic activity of a set of natural salpichrolides and derivatives was examined against two prostate carcinoma cell lines (PC3 and LNCaP) and two human breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7 and T47D).     ALS mutant FUS proteins are recruited into stress granules in induced pluripotent stem cells- derived motoneurons

    Patient-derived induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSCs) provide an opportunity to study human diseases mainly in those cases where no suitable model systems are available. Here we have taken advantage of in vitro iPSCs derived from patients affected by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and carrying mutations in the RNA-binding proteins FUS to study the cellular behavior of the mutant proteins in the appropriate genetic background. Moreover, the ability to differentiate iPSCs into spinal cord neural cells provides an in vitro model mimicking the physiological conditions. iPSCs were derived from FUS(R514S) and FUS(R521C) patients' fibroblasts, while in the case of the severe FUS(P525L) mutation, where fibroblasts were not available, a heterozygous and a homozygous iPSC lines were raised by TALEN-directed mutagenesis. We show that aberrant localization and recruitment of FUS into stress granules (SGs) is a prerogative of the FUS mutant proteins and occurs only upon induction of stress in both undifferentiated iPSCs and spinal cord neural cells. Moreover, we show that the incorporation into SGs is proportional to the amount of cytoplasmic FUS, nicely correlating with the cytoplasmic delocalization phenotype of the different mutants. Therefore, the available iPSCs represent a very powerful system for understanding the correlation between FUS mutations, the molecular mechanisms of SG formation and ALS ethiopathogenesis

    Thrips (Insecta: Thysanoptera) in cherry orchards in Mendoza, Argentina

    En las últimas temporadas se ha relacionado la presencia de trips con daños observados en cerezas en Mendoza, Argentina. Los daños serían producidos por la oviposición de estos insectos sobre frutos pequeños. El objetivo del trabajo fue comparar la evolución de poblaciones de las especies de trips en dos montes frutales con diferente manejo de malezas. Se tomaron muestras de malezas y de flores de cerezo en los dos montes y se analizó la evolución de las poblaciones de trips. Tres especies de trips fueron frecuentes en flores de cerezo en ambos montes: Frankliniella australis, F. occidentalis y Thrips tabaci. F. australis es la de mayor reproducción de las tres. No se observaron diferencias consistentes en cuanto al número de trips por flor de cerezo en ambas fincas y esto puede atribuirse a que la abundancia de dichos insectos en las flores de cerezo depende de otras variables tales como densidad de plantación, aporte por migración de áreas vecinas además de los niveles de infestación de malezas en el cultivo.In the last seasons the presence of trips has been related to damages observed on cherries in Mendoza, Argentina. The damages would be produced by the oviposition of these insects on small fruits. The objective of the work was to compare the evolution of populations of the present species of trips in two orchards with different weeds handling. Samples were taken from weeds and flowers of cherry tree in two orchards with different weeds handling and the evolution of the populations of trips was analyzed. Three species of thrips were frequent in flowers of cherry tree in crops: Frankliniella australis, F. occidentalis and Thrips tabaci. These species reproduce in their flowers, being F. australis the species that reproduces more of the three. Consistent differences as far as the number of trips by flower of cherry tree in both property were not observed.     Physical education and COVID-19: What have we learned?

    The aim of this paper is to explore what we have learned during the COVID-19 pandemic in the field of Physical Education in three different countries: Argentina, Spain and Sweden. Data were generated through semi-structured interviews, and the concept of field agency is used to make sense of the data. Differences were found among the three countries, regarding the content of the classes, the use of resources, the emotions of teachers, and the use of physical contact. This was also a result of the regulations and resources in place. The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated that the nature of the field of PE had been momentarily disrupted during the pandemic in these contexts. The habitus of both, teachers and students was challenged, and the economic capital of each context determined what was possible to do ‘as PE’. Particular new discourses, such as the risk of getting the COVID-19 virus, interacted through agents to re-shape the field of PE and modify agents’ habitus. The participating teachers enacted agency and expressed their capacity to make practical and normative judgements among alternative possible trajectories of action for their classes, in response to the emerging demands, dilemmas and ambiguities of the COVID-19 pandemic

    Sustainable electrochemical extraction of lithium from natural brine for renewable energy storage

    An electrochemical reactor for the extraction of lithium from natural brine has been designed. It comprises two 3D porous packed bed electrodes and a porous separator filled with electrolyte. The electrodes are filled with conducting petroleum coke particles covered respectively with LiMn 2 O 4 selective to lithium ions and polypyrrole selective to anions. It operates in two steps: First, the porous electrodes and the separator are filled with natural brine to extract Li + and Cl - by intercalation and adsorption. Then, after rinsing with water the reactor is filled with a dilute LiCl recovery solution and LiCl is recovered by reversing the electrical current. A mathematical model for the reactor comprising the Nernst-Planck equation and the battery intercalation model has been developed. The model was solved using the finite element method under the COMSOL Multiphysics environment in order to obtain the electrostatic potential and the ion currents and concentrations across the system. Unlike the asymmetric LiMn 2 O 4 /activated carbon super-capacitor, in the lithium extracting reactor the total LiCl concentration decreases in the extraction step and increases in the recovery step. A good agreement between the experimental and simulated potential difference vs. time at constant current validates the model of the reactor.Fil: Romero, Valeria Carolina Estefanía.
