Summing the Instanton Series in N=2 Superconformal Large-N QCD
We consider the multi-instanton collective coordinate integration measure in
N=2 supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theory with N_F fundamental hypermultiplets. In
the large-N limit, at the superconformal point where N_F=2N and all VEVs are
turned off, the k-instanton moduli space collapses to a single copy of
AdS_5*S^1. The resulting k-instanton effective measure is proportional to
N^{1/2} g^4 Z_k^(6), where Z_k^(6) is the partition function of N=(1,0) SYM
theory in six dimensions reduced to zero dimensions. The multi-instanton can in
fact be summed in closed form. As a hint of an AdS/CFT duality, with the usual
relation between the gauge theory and string theory parameters, this precisely
matches the normalization of the charge-k D-instanton measure in type IIB
string theory compactified to six dimensions on K3 with a vanishing two-cycle.Comment: 12 pages, amslate
Disordered Bose Einstein Condensates with Interaction in One Dimension
We study the effects of random scatterers on the ground state of the
one-dimensional Lieb-Liniger model of interacting bosons on the unit interval
in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime. We prove that Bose Einstein condensation
survives even a strong random potential with a high density of scatterers. The
character of the wave function of the condensate, however, depends in an
essential way on the interplay between randomness and the strength of the
two-body interaction. For low density of scatterers or strong interactions the
wave function extends over the whole interval. High density of scatterers and
weak interaction, on the other hand, leads to localization of the wave function
in a fragmented subset of the interval

ArgR is an essential local transcriptional regulator of the arcABC-operon in Streptococcus suis and crucial for biological fitness in acidic environment
Streptococcus suis is one of the most important pathogens in pigs and can also cause severe infections in humans. Despite its clinical relevance very little is known about the factors contributing to its virulence. Recently, we identified a new putative virulence factor in Streptococcus suis, the arginine deiminase system (ADS), an arginine catabolic enzyme system encoded by the arcABC-operon, which enables Streptococcus suis to survive in acidic environment. In this study, we focused on ArgR, an ADS associated regulator belonging to the ArgR/AhrC arginine repressor family. Using an argR knock-out strain we could show that ArgR is essential for arcABC-operon expression and necessary for the biological fitness of Streptococcus suis. By cDNA expression microarray analyses and quantitative real time RT-PCR we found that the arcABC-operon is the only gene cluster regulated by ArgR, which is in contrast to many other bacteria. Reporter gene analysis with gfp under the control of the arcABC promoter demonstrated that ArgR is able to activate the arcABC promoter. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays with fragments of the arcABC promoter and recombinant ArgR, and chromatin immunoprecipitation with antibodies directed against ArgR revealed that ArgR interacts with the arcABC promoter in vitro and in vivo by binding to a region from -147 to 72 bp upstream of the transcriptional start point. Overall our results show that in Streptococcus suis ArgR is an essential, system specific transcriptional regulator of the ADS directly interacting with the arcABC promoter in vivo
Equilibrium states for the Bose gas
The generating functional of the cyclic representation of the CCR (Canonical
Commutation Relations) representation for the thermodynamic limit of the grand
canonical ensemble of the free Bose gas with attractive boundary conditions is
rigorously computed. We use it to study the condensate localization as a
function of the homothety point for the thermodynamic limit using a sequence of
growing convex containers. The Kac function is explicitly obtained proving
non-equivalence of ensembles in the condensate region in spite of the

Volumetric Properties and Stiffness Modulus of Asphalt Concrete Mixtures Made with Selected Quarry Fillers: Experimental Investigation and Machine Learning Prediction
In recent years, the attention of many researchers in the field of pavement engineering has focused on the search for alternative fillers that could replace Portland cement and traditional limestone in the production of asphalt mixtures. In addition, from a Czech perspective, there was the need to determine the quality of asphalt mixtures prepared with selected fillers provided by different local quarries and suppliers. This paper discusses an experimental investigation and a machine learning modeling carried out by a decision tree CatBoost approach, based on experimentally determined volumetric and mechanical properties of fine-grained asphalt concretes prepared with selected quarry fillers used as an alternative to traditional limestone and Portland cement. Air voids content and stiffness modulus at 15 °C were predicted on the basis of seven input variables, including bulk density, a categorical variable distinguishing the aggregates’ quarry of origin, and five main filler-oxide contents determined by means of X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. All mixtures were prepared by fixing the filler content at 10% by mass, with a bitumen content of 6% (PG 160/220), and with roughly the same grading curve. Model predictive performance was evaluated in terms of six different evaluation metrics with Pearson correlation and coefficient of determination always higher than 0.96 and 0.92, respectively. Based on the results obtained, this study could represent a forward feasibility study on the mathematical prediction of the asphalt mixtures’ mechanical behavior on the basis of its filler mineralogical composition
A rule-free workflow for the automated generation of databases from scientific literature
In recent times, transformer networks have achieved state-of-the-art
performance in a wide range of natural language processing tasks. Here we
present a workflow based on the fine-tuning of BERT models for different
downstream tasks, which results in the automated extraction of structured
information from unstructured natural language in scientific literature.
Contrary to existing methods for the automated extraction of structured
compound-property relations from similar sources, our workflow does not rely on
the definition of intricate grammar rules. Hence, it can be adapted to a new
task without requiring extensive implementation efforts and knowledge. We test
our data-extraction workflow by automatically generating a database for Curie
temperatures and one for band gaps. These are then compared with
manually-curated datasets and with those obtained with a state-of-the-art
rule-based method. Furthermore, in order to showcase the practical utility of
the automatically extracted data in a material-design workflow, we employ them
to construct machine-learning models to predict Curie temperatures and band
gaps. In general we find that, although more noisy, automatically extracted
datasets can grow fast in volume and that such volume partially compensates for
the inaccuracy in downstream tasks.Comment: 19 pages, 11 figure
Role of glucose and CcpA in capsule expression and virulence of Streptococcus suis
Streptococcus suis is one of the most important pathogens in pigs and is also an emerging zoonotic agent. After crossing the epithelial barrier, S. suis causes bacteraemia, resulting in meningitis, endocarditis and bronchopneumonia. Since the host environment seems to be an important regulatory component for virulence, we related expression of virulence determinants of S. suis to glucose availability during growth and to the sugar metabolism regulator catabolite control protein A (CcpA). We found that expression of the virulence-associated genes arcB, representing arcABC operon expression, cps2A, representing capsular locus expression, as well as sly, ofs, sao and epf, differed significantly between exponential and early stationary growth of a highly virulent serotype 2 strain. Deletion of ccpA altered the expression of the surface-associated virulence factors arcB, sao and eno, as well as the two currently proven virulence factors in pigs, ofs and cps2A, in early exponential growth. Global expression analysis using a cDNA expression array revealed 259 differentially expressed genes in early exponential growth, of which 141 were more highly expressed in the CcpA mutant strain 10¿ccpA and 118 were expressed to a lower extent. Interestingly, among the latter genes, 18 could be related to capsule and cell wall synthesis. Correspondingly, electron microscopy characterization of strain 10¿ccpA revealed a markedly reduced thickness of the capsule. This phenotype correlated with enhanced binding to porcine plasma proteins and a reduced resistance to killing by porcine neutrophils. Taken together, our data demonstrate that CcpA has a significant effect on the capsule synthesis and virulence properties of S. suis
